  • Star Wars begins filming in Tunisia.

  • The Cray-1, the first commercially developed supercomputer, is released by Seymour Cray’s Cray Research, with the first purchaser being the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

  • Viking Program sends out the Viking 1 and Viking 2. Here’s a video on Wikipedia I found about it (It should work I think?)

  • The Viking 1 lander successfully lands on Mars. It takes the photo “Face on Mars”

  • The Muppet Show is broadcast in the United Kingdom for the first time, on ITV.

alright all that was the fun stuff now here’s a few disasters that occurred.

  • A 7.5 magnitude Guatemala earthquake affects Guatemala and Honduras with a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent), leaving 23,000 dead and 76,000 injured.

  • The Tangshan earthquake flattens Tangshan, China, killing 242,769 people, and injuring 164,851.

  • Hurricane Liza killed more than 600 people in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, striking the resort city of La Paz, Baja California Sur where 350 people died, and another 280 in the surrounding area.

  • The 8.0 Magnatude Moro Gulf earthquake hits off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, triggering a destructive tsunami, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people and leaving more than 90,000 homeless.

  • The first known outbreak of Ebola virus occurs in Yambuku, Zaire.
