Do the opposite of Eleanor Tudor and River Cherry and you will do just fine.

Please do not communicate exclusively in Holikachuk

I do not think very many of your Marines will understand you.

Thank you.

Ideally don’t open fire in the middle of briefing.

You kill them at the hive choke, not at briefing.

Do NOT be disrespected by your marines, I personally always carry pepper spray to teach those that dishonor me a severe lesson.

But in all seriousness be strict and fair, do not be a push over like how I suffered when I first played XO.

First and the MOST important rule of XO: ALWAYS COMMUNICATE! I cannot stress it enough, silent CIC is a non-existant CIC, and non-existant CIC means dead marines and a lost round. Use your announcements to constantly bolster the morale while providing useful information to marines, direct them if they start to steer off course, tell them how many xenos you counted in total and what castes(strains too) they are. Its all useful information that can save rounds by just having marines pushing at the right place and the right time.

Always be IC, dont be a total goofball XO in a maid dress(looking at you Milo), command respect and actual authority. Dont fear to put your foot down when you feel its the right thing to do absolutely, but dont be afraid to listen to a marine that you know to give good advise consistently enough. When people like and respect the XO, they will listen and heed their word.

Always double-confirm any and all OB coordinates, if marines push into them as you fire bad things will happen. I’ve seen and done enough mutinies over that.

Most importantly, do not deploy into battle until you sufficiently learned commanding from CIC and have any kind of experience as SL. You are second to only CO, but the marines will push with you and protect you like a CO, so use that and command them on the ground with the force of three hundred Spartans. But before that is to happen, you must learn tactics and strategy, master those from the bubble, win hearts and minds, and perhaps one day you’ll become a man people are willing to throw 5 people away for. Best way to learn tactics? Unironically, playing both sides makes you understand what xenos and marines think in the same situation, thus you can command from CIC with knowledge of both teams and counterplay xeno tactics.

Completely agree with the entire post. Well done. However, I wanted to focus specifically on this paragraph. A little goofy is ok. But there is a fine line. Most people do not know where the line is and your advice is very good for those people.

Im admittedly a mid XO in terms of skill, but I have played enough to be able to give very general pointers.

Any character gimmicks should not actually get in the way of commanding. Want to be a angry irish man? Sure!

Want to be an angry irish man that does not think the world of his marines, and thinks the TWE is the better armed force, sure!

Want to be an angry irish man that actively insults his marines constantly, and makes massive RP heavy broadcasts. No.

Besides that, its a fine line between communicating and spouting unhelpful broadcasts constantly. One I have not mastered but good Commanders have. You should NOT be saying too little, or too much unhelpful stuff. This is the difficult one to master.

Keep an eye on your squad leads like they are saints, they are often the people who have a better idea whats going on and will be communicating. You should NOT be missing any radios from them, make sure they always have orders specific to them

keep on top of what your intel is. No use having forty odd points sat around, but you might also wish to save them for certain things.

My personal advice, that I think is most important. Do not obsess over being a good commander. If you are having fun, and not ruining it for others, the game is doing its job.
