Trajan is a solid choice. I chose Augustus because he laid the foundation for all others. For soldier Emperors, Trajan is supreme. Only one coming close is Aurelian. He restored the Empire in 5 years.

For Byzantium, I have soured on Justinian over the years. I think he overextended.

Alexios was a great emperor too, his big mistake was honestly inviting the franks to help him. The crusaders ended up doing nothing but fucking the Byzantines in the end and cementing the break between East and west.

Basil II was a great emperor, his big issue was always being on campaign and not being home to run the county and have kids. He gives off the Trajan vibes.

I think the Justinian hate is a huge push from western historians who have historically hated the eastern Romans. Italy is literally next door to Greece, Northern Africa was a huge bread basket, etc. the only kind of silly expansion was southern Spain.

For someone who did a shitload like Aurelian, in stopping the revolts, ACTUALLY reversing the Roman inflation of currency which is rare for Emperors. BTFOing multiple germanic invasions of Italy and the Danube.

He died in the most unnecessary way possible…Guy did more in 5 years than multiple Emperors lifespans combined.

Restitutor Orbis for a reason.

I agree. However, I can’t blame Alexios for the mistakes of his successors. However, allowing Bohemond anywhere near the near east was a huge mistake.

As to Justinian, Spain was an over extension.

Very much true, but what else are you going to do with a treasury chest stacked so high by Emperor Anastasius.

What really obliterated Justinians dream was the plague that swept in the most literal worst timing. Plus he lived long enough to effictively see his wife and close friends die, the Augustus way.

How has the greatest, or deserved to be, emperor, Julius Caesar, not been mentioned? Julius Caesar. Practically the inventor of mercy to enemies with his gracious offer of clemency to anyone that opposed him, allowing them opportunity to keep their property and lives if they surrendered themselves to him. Now, a normality, then an absurd notion. Taken from us by traitorous cowards envious of his graciousness. If there was any perfect emperor, it was him. Even those who called themselves his friends and lovers of Rome before cutting him down in betrayal for “his own good” will be forever vilified as pathetic cretins at best, in the seventh layer of hell at kindest.
The tears he shed when he claimed he would never be as great a conqueror as Alexander shine brighter than the diamonds of history before the greatest event that occurred at 0 AD.
His legacy may have even set up the events for the Messiah to be born and save humanity. God bless Caesar; God bless Rome.
