Fear RP Dilemma

I am geniuenly interested in knowing why Fear RP is always present against Xenos but completely disappears against a Predator.

How is it that 6 Foot Cloaking Alien with Plasma weapons is less scary than Xenos. Especially when they are seen scalping marines etc. Whenever marines see a Yautja 99% of the time they go chasing it across the map.

Because when you fight a pred, there is a good to 100% chance that they will recover you instead of permaing you.

Preds tend to throw marines they killed back to the medics/FOB

Predator can’t round end you, and is alone, and you stand a fair chance of beating her even alone.

A Ravager can round end you, and will fuck you up even alone. Oh and there’s like 3 of them, and 20 extra Xenos.

These MFers won’t call for help, they won’t bait you in to hive weeds, THEY DO NOT FIGHT ON WEEDS, they don’t do stun combat, most of them are easy to kill if you have anything AP and if you die you will like 70% get revived. Also you get a good reward of the pred masks drip and antihugger protection instead of getting nothing but few fracs and wasted meds when you fight xenos.

It’s LRP metagaming

E: clarity - all the explanations above are not based on first contact experience, but rather based on previous round experience and what the player expects the other one to do. This bears little relation to the actual experience/behavior one would have encountering an unknown 7-foot tall cloaking murder machine

They can, but its just for the SOTW to throw back a worthy fighter, its entirely up to them if they round-end you or not, there isn’t an obligation to throw back marines you’ve killed but if it becomes a common thing then it might be a problem. It probably depends on how you behave, start a fight or interact with them, might as well just depend on the yautja player themselves.

EDIT: It probably depends on what you play, too, if you’re a specialist and still vital to the round, you’ll be thrown back, but if you’re some random plat-rifleman named John ā€˜Unga’ Marine who wordlessly walked up to the pred and PB’d them, the chance still exists that you’re getting skinned and hanged somewhere

ā€œFear RPā€ is just a silly name given by someone for marines who don’t want their round ended prematurely. There is no ā€œfearā€ and no ā€œRPā€ in there, nobody is pretending to be scared that Ravager will come out of the darkness.

I don’t think this dilemma exists at all.

FearRP against Preds absolutely does happen- Recovery is not guaranteed.

I think fearRP against preds is much less noticeable for a few reasons:

A) 90% of marines ignore preds because they don’t want to deal with them, or are oblivious to them.

B) The 10% of marines who DO fight predators are much, much more likely to be experienced, competent players. These types of players don’t fearRP in general, and take calculated risks against xenomorphs instead of being overly cautious fearRPers.

C) Predators are optional side quests where you opt in to be legally griefed. You can ignore them completely and they wont bother trying to reciprocate with RP if you don’t show any effort to engage with them. If you win, then you get bragging rights and you’ll rarely get the funny clan mask, which makes you a far more competent fragger. It’s also just fun to beat an enemy player when they objectively hold the advantage over you in most cases (though a competent marine with light armour, AP and premeds stands a good chance to solo most preds). They aren’t like xenomorphs where everyone is forced to engage them.

D) When marines gang up on predators in groups, herd mentality takes over and they unga hellpush without fear. This isn’t specific to predators, this is just what happens whenever you have a group of high morale marines who think they can win without significant risk to themselves.

Basically, the fearRPers will fearRP xenos and preds. These guys will be at the frontline or in FOB, and if they come across a pred, they’ll probably ignore them.

The guys who engage and shoot predators solo are usually competent players. These guys do not fearRP in the first place. In many cases, they will be actively seeking out predators if they see them for various reasons (low risk of perma, high reward if they somehow don’t SD, bragging rights, sense of pride and accomplishment).

To a spectator, you’ll just see people either ignoring preds, solo fighting them, or swarming them in large groups. You might conclude this means people don’t fearRP preds, but that’s just false. Whilst the fearRP is lessened because there’s a lower risk and the fact that preds are optional, it very much exists, it’s very much there- It’s just not as observable, because people are just ignoring the preds instead of fluoride staring at you in fear as you get dragged into the hive.

TL;DR the players who fearRP the xenos are not the same players hunting preds

Basil hit most of it, but also, why am I scared of Preds to start with?

Sprite-wise, they don’t invoke terror. They’re human sized (lorewise 7-8 ft tall, but I’ve seen bigger CO whitelists) creatures wearing chainmail fishnets, tribal masks, and partial plate. Ravs are 2 tile tall, standout red colored monsters with scythe-blades for arms.

I don’t care that they’re buff, I’ve got a gun. Meanwhile, the only tech the preds show marines before combat is cloaking, something marines have, and their speak & spell wristwatch.

But, lets literally examine them closer to assess the threat. Shift-click, and heres the 2 pred flavor texts I can remember. ā€œUnspeakable Horrorā€ ā€œStop staring and run!ā€ Mind you thats probably cherry picking, but man it feels like preds expect to be the scariest thing when I’m a sci-fi combat marine, on mission, in full kit, with a whole platoon at my back, fighting Aliens that excel at taking you alive for actual horrors beyond comprehention.

Not seen the first movie in ages, but youtube ā€œPredator First Contactā€ shows a scene:

Minigunner sees brush moving, prepares to shoot hostile.

Second bro sees an HPC flash, runs to investigate, sees a cloaked pred, and shoots at it.

I get Dutch’s Dozen are parodies of action heroes, but guess what, I’m a USMC Marine! I am the ultimate badass!

there’s also a chance they forget how to revive you and you accidentally get tortured by medical malpractice

Have you SEEN the movies? If Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover can and want to take on the Predator in an epic 1v1, then so can my 23-year-old, sleep-deprived Marine.

most people enjoy winning, the ones who dont think they’ll win usually try to just run away and not engage, which is not fun but I get why
