Wait. Hold on W-Y. Windsor & Yamato. This has to be a coincidence right?

Yes, because Weyland yutani’s name process went like this:

First it was leyland toyota, after the car brands.

then leyland yutani, with yutani coming from a japanese neighbour the guy coming up with the name knew.

then finally weyland yutani, because copyright.

“The creation of Weyland-Yutani was a collaborative effort among the “Alien” series’ designers and filmmakers. Initially named “Weylan-Yutani,” the company’s name and logo evolved over time. “Weylan-Yutani” was visible in a few places in the first Alien movie, including some beer cans that the Nostromo crew drank from. “Weylan” was rumored to be the name of Ridley Scott’s neighbor from England. In Aliens, Cameron changed the company name to “Weyland-Yutani” and displayed the name and logo much more prominently. Scott, although not a fan of Aliens, did not object to using the name “Weyland” in the Prometheus and its sequel.”

But no clue why yutani
Edit: found some bits about it
" The impetus, according to Rob Cobb, was to make it sound like England had been “Japanimized,” due largely to Japan’s rising corporate dominance during the 70s and 80s. He took inspiration from the name “Leyland-Toyota,” and made a few adjustments. Later on, a “d” was added for Aliens, and the rest is history."

Windsor-Yamato sounds much cooler and historically accurate.

to literally what? the name weyland-yutani is a company made by a merger of two companies named after people who aren’t part of the royal family.

Windsor-Yamato could work as the official name of the 3WE Royal Family.

Are there other factions similar to the CLF? I imagine in the vastness of space various micronations have sprang up. Kind of like the Periphery and Deep Periphery in the BattleTech setting.

Yeah there’s insurgents all over space, most notable are the ones on linna who exist because Australia had a rebellion and the Australians on linna decided to join the rebellion.

Was the USCM or TWE called in to pacify the uprising or did the UPP or CLF use it as an opportunity to recruit new members to the cause?

3WE had to rely on the USCM to put down the rebellion, both on earth (canberra got nuked) and on linna (USCM took the planet permanently) Fun fact: Canberra got nuked in 2182 after a ten year long insurrection, CM is set in 2182.

Also CLF doesn’t exist in official cannon.

In my cannon it’s Empress Elizabeth the 3rd

Sounds about right considering how long Queen Elizabeth II ruled. Also @Blue-Lou , is the royal palace located in Japan or the UK?

I don’t believe it’s mentioned but probably both given the fact royals can have multiple palaces.

I have awoken from my 4 day long forced slumber.

That is a fair point. I personally have something to say about the TWE being a monarchy, but that’s moreso an issue with the Aliens canon itself.

I have looked through Google Scholar for about 2 hours now and have not been able to find a reliable source that claims that the Japanese imperial family uses the term Yamato to refer to themselves or the organization in any way or form. No offense, but I’d hardly consider Reddit to be a reliable source of information.

If you find something, let me know, because I really do love East Asian history, and that’s my planned specialization for history once I begin working on my PhD. Heck, I’ve even got a paper on ethnic minorities in China in the works for an academic competition later.

To my knowledge, this isn’t true. Yamato (大和、やまと) has always been used to refer to the country (albeit it’sa very old name), and its later uses are derived from this antiquated name.

Small etymological rant, but the term Yamato as we know it today derived the character 倭 (わ, wa), which many Eastern scholars in antiquity used to refer to Japan. In referring to their own country, the character for great, 大, was added, transforming the term into 大倭 (やまと、yamato). However, 倭 can also be used to refer to dwarf, and because this has such a negative connotation, the character was replaced with the one for peace and harmony, 和 (わ, wa). Ergo, we have the modern day 大和。

Man do I have news for you.

My dad loved the series as a kid, and he was a Hong Konger lol

Update from my Japanese bros
The Japanese Imperial Family explicitly does NOT have a last name because they aren’t supposed to have one. Which really is unhelpful but is the honest truth. You’re supposed to know the entire family by first name because they are descendants of the Sun God. That becomes a whole discussion about the Shinto religion.

They are supposed to have uncommon first names to help with recognition. For male family members they are supposed to have “hito” at the end of their first name. Like Hirohito, Akihito, etc. So that is useful for character name creation, which means no popular or common names. Japan is a bit sexist so there’s not any rules for women besides an uncommon first name. Or at least the rules for them were so under-the-radar my Japanese bros didn’t discuss it at all. :person_shrugging:

Dope information man. Thank you for going out of your way to do this.

Lmao I was literally thinking about this when I posted it. It would be SO FUNNY for the USS Almayer to throw hands with an anime reference. Might make a REALLY FUNNY ERT.
