Wait. Hold on W-Y. Windsor & Yamato. This has to be a coincidence right?
Yes, because Weyland yutaniâs name process went like this:
First it was leyland toyota, after the car brands.
then leyland yutani, with yutani coming from a japanese neighbour the guy coming up with the name knew.
then finally weyland yutani, because copyright.
âThe creation of Weyland-Yutani was a collaborative effort among the âAlienâ seriesâ designers and filmmakers. Initially named âWeylan-Yutani,â the companyâs name and logo evolved over time. âWeylan-Yutaniâ was visible in a few places in the first Alien movie, including some beer cans that the Nostromo crew drank from. âWeylanâ was rumored to be the name of Ridley Scottâs neighbor from England. In Aliens, Cameron changed the company name to âWeyland-Yutaniâ and displayed the name and logo much more prominently. Scott, although not a fan of Aliens, did not object to using the name âWeylandâ in the Prometheus and its sequel.â
But no clue why yutani
Edit: found some bits about it
" The impetus, according to Rob Cobb, was to make it sound like England had been âJapanimized,â due largely to Japanâs rising corporate dominance during the 70s and 80s. He took inspiration from the name âLeyland-Toyota,â and made a few adjustments. Later on, a âdâ was added for Aliens, and the rest is history."
Windsor-Yamato sounds much cooler and historically accurate.
to literally what? the name weyland-yutani is a company made by a merger of two companies named after people who arenât part of the royal family.
Windsor-Yamato could work as the official name of the 3WE Royal Family.
I love how the worst drugs in the universe are called âX-Drugsâ like itâs some 90s cartoon and we got Xtreme drugs
also one day i will replace mindbreaker with ALD-91.
Umbrella Corporation logic.
X drug sounds like Powerpuff Girls.
Are there other factions similar to the CLF? I imagine in the vastness of space various micronations have sprang up. Kind of like the Periphery and Deep Periphery in the BattleTech setting.
Yeah thereâs insurgents all over space, most notable are the ones on linna who exist because Australia had a rebellion and the Australians on linna decided to join the rebellion.
Was the USCM or TWE called in to pacify the uprising or did the UPP or CLF use it as an opportunity to recruit new members to the cause?
3WE had to rely on the USCM to put down the rebellion, both on earth (canberra got nuked) and on linna (USCM took the planet permanently) Fun fact: Canberra got nuked in 2182 after a ten year long insurrection, CM is set in 2182.
Also CLF doesnât exist in official cannon.
In my cannon itâs Empress Elizabeth the 3rd
Sounds about right considering how long Queen Elizabeth II ruled. Also @Blue-Lou , is the royal palace located in Japan or the UK?
I donât believe itâs mentioned but probably both given the fact royals can have multiple palaces.
I have awoken from my 4 day long forced slumber.
That is a fair point. I personally have something to say about the TWE being a monarchy, but thatâs moreso an issue with the Aliens canon itself.
I have looked through Google Scholar for about 2 hours now and have not been able to find a reliable source that claims that the Japanese imperial family uses the term Yamato to refer to themselves or the organization in any way or form. No offense, but Iâd hardly consider Reddit to be a reliable source of information.
If you find something, let me know, because I really do love East Asian history, and thatâs my planned specialization for history once I begin working on my PhD. Heck, Iâve even got a paper on ethnic minorities in China in the works for an academic competition later.
To my knowledge, this isnât true. Yamato (大ĺăăăžă¨) has always been used to refer to the country (albeit itâsa very old name), and its later uses are derived from this antiquated name.
Small etymological rant, but the term Yamato as we know it today derived the character ĺ (ă, wa), which many Eastern scholars in antiquity used to refer to Japan. In referring to their own country, the character for great, 大, was added, transforming the term into 大ĺ (ăăžă¨ăyamato). However, ĺ can also be used to refer to dwarf, and because this has such a negative connotation, the character was replaced with the one for peace and harmony, ĺ (ă, wa). Ergo, we have the modern day 大ĺă
Man do I have news for you.
My dad loved the series as a kid, and he was a Hong Konger lol
Ah good old StarBlazers.
Update from my Japanese bros
The Japanese Imperial Family explicitly does NOT have a last name because they arenât supposed to have one. Which really is unhelpful but is the honest truth. Youâre supposed to know the entire family by first name because they are descendants of the Sun God. That becomes a whole discussion about the Shinto religion.
They are supposed to have uncommon first names to help with recognition. For male family members they are supposed to have âhitoâ at the end of their first name. Like Hirohito, Akihito, etc. So that is useful for character name creation, which means no popular or common names. Japan is a bit sexist so thereâs not any rules for women besides an uncommon first name. Or at least the rules for them were so under-the-radar my Japanese bros didnât discuss it at all. ![]()
Dope information man. Thank you for going out of your way to do this.
Lmao I was literally thinking about this when I posted it. It would be SO FUNNY for the USS Almayer to throw hands with an anime reference. Might make a REALLY FUNNY ERT.
