RP Objectives.

What is your take on Objectives that are completely RP oriented? Some captains and COs like to give this some weight and, while fun, is useless.

Like the colony blackbox.

Im would love a bit of staff input on this too.

Any RP objectives in general fleshes out the game more, giving it a more realistic and story-orientated weight. And if done well and the objectives are varied, it can make each round unique and memorable for all involved parties. But like you’ve mentioned, it is objectively useless and not everyone cares to do it since they are more focused on the mechanics of winning the game.

I think RP objectives will work best if you give it to people who do appreciate the added roleplay, but even then, there is the limit of time contraints and hostiles that makes groundside rp almost impossible to carry out to its fullest potential. I’ve found that shipside RP objectives work best since theres less pressure of having to fight for your own life and more freedom to RP as you see fit. I’ve had quite memorable interactions by simply handing in SITREP papers as a SEA to CO’s and interacting with CLs on how the XX-121 appeared in the colony. It made the entire experience more immersive and felt less like another cookie cutter round where marines win/lose before moving onto the next round that feels more or less the same.

I made Corporate Liaisons fill out a tax declaration as a CMB fax responder. One CL even filled out EVERYTHING as sent it back. Did not screenshot sadly.

I also once made an inquiry about a migratory status of one of the Almayer crew members (the guy was roleplaying as someone who enlisted for papers), utilizing one of the survivor CMBs who was on the ship. Went about as well as you would expect.

Don’t know if that counts, but forced marines to write an essay for their NJP.

Made my goal to collect all W-Y trading cards. It was a four hour long round so I was dying from boredom.

But by far the best one in my opinion was the one where I made research create a new Souto Softdrinks ™ flavor as a W-Y fax responder (they were testing the PR that made research corporate at the time). They actually fucking did it, but lost due to CL fumbling on hijack and all died. The Souto flavor, which was described only as “tasting like tires” was lost to time.

Honestly giving some command elements or the CL semi-randomized antag-style side objectives that get a shout-out if completed would be awesome. Not even stuff that’s against the Marines best-interests

“Set up a beacon in colony medical”

“Acquire blood samples from three different runners”

“Keep Sensors up for at least 50% of mission time”

“Have the MPs interview and report on any survivors”

Just random stuff.

Running RP groundside events for a small group of people/ small subset of the population is incredibly fun. It is also very difficult and requires a staff member’s full attention. Automating something could be cool, but it’d need to have mechanical implications really carry any weight. The inclusion of intel officers already mostly fulfills that niche.

Those are all solid idea.

Kind of adjacent in that it was self-assigned, but my CC got his live news show, Ricky Rogers Live (sponsored by Weyland Yutani), sponsored by Weyland-Yutani by recovering the Hybrisa-Prospera black-box, colony admin ID, and shredded some incriminating transcripts, and offering it to the CL in exchange for ten years of sponsorship and an NDA.

Now my CC wears WY patches and usually gets a WY hat from whatever CL is on, and does ad shoutouts for them.

There is a lot of room for little role played scenarios like this across the board and would love for the more RP-oriented roles to look at setting (reasonable non-griefing) goals to achieve and then involving others in achieving them, instead of just waiting for things to happen to them.
