State Of Turrets Discussion

lets bring back flag backpack, all it needs is new sprites (including a proper onmob sprite with a wavy animated flag)

If I got a flag backpack so I could fulfill my standard bearer cheerleader LARP I’d be the happiest woman alive for a hot minute. Give us flag packs!!!

The poor state of turrets (power, accessibility, enjoyment) is one of the biggest factors contributing to CT being underplayed. I think the the brute, especially given that it directly competes with the turrets, is a great place to look at what the end product of turrets aught look like and could help contribute significantly to CT play rate and diversity.

The difficulty is doing so without making turrets extremely frustrating for xenos to play against. Fundamentally an automated gun that is plonked down on a flank or cade line and shoots you is very unengaging and annoying, especially if it is powerful/impactful enough to compete with the brute.

An idea that comes to me is using the design of ‘holo-rounds’, truncate the normal, sniper, and shotgun turrets into a single type and have their ammo apply a holo-target effect to xenos, and most importantly pair that with a visual marines can see. It means the turrets are best used in conjunction with marines, instead of the more typical holding of a flan by themselves, but I think it is a really fun design and frankly turrets solo holding areas is probably just a bad design that should not be made viable to begin with.

Sentry guns should be what their name implies - being a sentry.

I think I remember TGMC having a feature where sentry gun sends a radio message on certain channels when, where and what it engages. Add a filter that “marks” a xeno and doesn’t let it trigger a big alarm on its own and this seems like a perfect fit with jobs nobody wants to do, which is guarding comms, or fob flanks. But somehow prevent burrower from cheesing it. Xenos should still be able to break it (especially with the help of defenders), but marines are warned that something happens and are allowed to defend it without mind-nubbing staring at a runner that appears once every five minutes to flouride stare.

Maybe reduce ammo in their mag, nerfing their sustain if engaged with xenos (but not when not engaging), also nerf AP so defenders can act as a bullet sponges for other xenos (or give them passive decrease of damage received from them)?

Other than that maybe give medics option to take mini and mini-omni sentries so that they can protect themselfs better?

Maybe give sentries altIFF and then somehow buff them/their availability?

It already exists to some extent. CTs can get turret radio keys in their prep. after encrypting and linking turret to the laptop it sends messages on separate channel and laptop also voices them. Messages include location, what kind of turret but i don’t think it tells you what it is engaging. Btw encryption/linking sucks ass since it takes more time to move the turret which is terrible for frontline.

The whole shtick would be so much better with some centralized oversight. Maybe give those keys to SLs/CIC (maybe they have them idk)? Maybe auto connect marine turrets to all laptops/turret radiokey without any interaction so we don`t need to roundstart catch every CT to link all turrets to a single computer?

I do like playing with sentries but man, having a toxic and emotionally codependant gf would be less maintenance-intensive.

Stray away from 6 seconds? That’s it, sentry permanently damaged, now it’s just a prop decorating the map. Got too bold with it on the front? Queen screes and a rav two-tapped your sentry (this is why the sniper sentry is goated).

Your whole identity as a frontline comtech is gone for the entire round just like that.

Also from a conceptual standpoint the sentry “upgrades” shouldn’t cost credits at all if they are sidegrades, they should cost credits only if they are a blunt upgrade.

Also a bit of a recommendation: To make plasma sentry NOT suck just make it shoot a bolt of fire that explodes in a BGel cloud. It makes a weird type of fire more accessible, BGel because of the debuffs is more versatile so the sentry itself becomes more versatile and the fat cloud that it makes will render it inviable in frontline chokepoints because the FF risk remains as high as it is today. Also BGel won’t kill anything on it’s own because it’s weaker than naphtal so it should be balanced.

To be fair, the entire ComTech needs to be reworked at this point, given all the changes to the Xenos, new classes, adjustments, etc. Playing a ComTech during a hijack is pretty bad right now, as recent adjustments have reduced its usefulness by 50% (unless you’re Captain Plasteel), and the turrets are basically all bad, with the exception of the Tesla Coil. And since Hijacks are now more on the regular site, it really sucks for this class.

A customizable turret system would have a huge impact to giving this role more options and dynamic gameplay. You know, just get a turret base frame, and then clip in a weapon of your choice and the ammunition of your choice. Maybe with extras modules like smartgun system, radar or other shit

Also brute launcher is, at least, a very nice addition for the class. Since in 75% of cases, every point spent in the current turret system is a wasted point. (At the current state of the turrets)

I still think that standard turrets need to be more accessible. Not upgraded versions as those make sense to be more rare, but generic sentry guns are so bad at their job theres no reason to make them impossible to get more of (ignoring the CAS omnisentry someone uses once in a blue moon)

Not to repeat myself, but to make turrets in a better space we need them to actually be a threat to more than T1 xenos or have them readily available.

yeah but… the upgrades are pretty much sidegrades - each comes with downsides or they are just so underpowered that they are worse than stock ones and you need to shell out 15 points
