Make interesting characters. John Commander gets boring. Yeah you win but its at the cost of a 2 hour slopfest, half cadesitting and the other half getting wiped in some stupid ungaball the greenie started
Why not be a XO that only does split drops? What about a CO that doesn’t cadesit and orders a mass deathcharge while telling you that you’ll be a martyr? Cadesitting? Why not just do a large rotation that fails or wins the game?
I get XOs and COs are supposed to be competent but competency doesn’t always make interesting. What about sending Alpha Squad to go suicide against all of the tier 3s for “manpower conservation”
The same can even go for Queen in some situations
Hijacking? Do deadchat a favour and suicide bomb hangar and either gib all of the marines or end the round quickly
Admins… I get some of this might be Rule 2 but let’s make it interesting with “We got wiped? Die as martyrs in a mass flanking which will either have you cut off or frag” rather than “Marines wiped at Death Choke of Doom, let’s cadeshit at X location”

Kleiner Ops are at the very least FUNNY to watch so they’re not terrible but it’s never fun seeing marines larping the Codex Astartes with how scared they are to do anything but ungaball and cadeshit

when you have time to play only one CM round a day and you’ve just gotten off of work you will understand why this starts to become less and less fun when it’s the only thing that somebody does
there are good gimmicks and bad gimmicks, if your gimmick is that you do one thing in every situation and grief it isn’t really a good gimmick
there are also plenty of XO/CO players who don’t just do ‘the meta’ every single game but generally those players should be trying to keep the game fun for those under them
i concur with this , the more something is done the more boring it gets, and i don’t think split drop and paradrops are really grief and it only gets questionable if you tell marines to ungaball a 3 tile choke, but overall i see the point you’re making
what if any queen tried to do that, XOs and COs sometimes try other stuff but ehh not queens. but yes command roles of both sides should be responsible for making the round fun rather then trying to win, but that issue is much bigger with xenos and queens
the issue i have is from just how stagnant marine plays are
ungaball stops? cadesit or FOBsit, nothing ever happens
the ungas kill enough xenos? ungaball all the way back
split drop? even though that would genuinely be a really good offensive idea let’s save that for when im not bored
paradrops? let’s talk about how good they can be while never using them
flanks? i tell them to go the direction, flanking is just something they improv
then again even with the 3 additional options, still not many plays

You know I had a problem with Alan Jones at one point but then I saw him play CO a couple times. A Bravo SL and a bunch of Bravoids were like “fuck me I don’t wanna build FOB” and, seeing that Bravo had almost 2.5x the numbers of Charlie, he sent Bravo to front. Op ended up being a wash but it was fun and he made the round more fun for those cats.
But yes it was a total failure – but he’s not doing it every single round, he just did it the once because it was a NET FUN choice for that specific round
Every strat that is meta is not meta because it represents the peak of battlefield tactics. It’s meta because it’s foolproof and it’s the easiest thing for marines to follow, and thus they succeed.
If you want better strats then be deserving of them by being a better marine. Else the XO could be held accountable of mass griefing.
Oh, they can follow orders but I think last time I went off regular script it only works if I’m full blown man handling most aspects of the op hands on.
Like take kleiner for example and I’m saying this as someone who gets a full play by play of about every round he COs on.
A lot of the time he tries to execute on a plan and he gets tripped by by an individual suddenly forgetting how paradrop and lases work or someone else being selectively incompetent.
I would say marines are very inclined to self sabotage more then anything.
There’s also a difference between like, “scout lazes a paradrop on sensors and the whole force stays together” and “we’re dropping marines in groups of 8 to 12 different locations on the map…”
It’s not really fair to lump them all together, you can be very successful paradropping if you have a good plan. It’s also not really fair to blame an XO when they paradrop and half the marines forget to wear parachutes, or the scout leaves his LD in prep, or the GP decides to land at the LZ instead of doing a flyby. \
It’s a fair point from lago about, XOs/COs who do something incredibly wacky or absurd that makes the round unfun, but there are absolutely many strategies that are more than solid that aren’t regularly seen just because of the backlash CIC gets when they go off-meta and marines’ general inability to listen to orders.
all jokes aside this server only becomes fun when we nuke Whitelists and stop caring about “walance and muh realism” in favor of literally just adding cool stuff
someone should not be afraid of getting ahelped just because they wanted to try a wacky new *fun* strategy for one round that has a 99% mortality rate (like a rifleman running into hive with a shit ton of ammo boxes and a incin grenade to cook them all off)
I think you should try hopping on as XO sometime and doing a “Fun” and “off-meta” plan. Try it and see the reactions you get from minute 1 most of the time, especially as a lesser known XO.
