What's something that's really improved from old CM?

CM has changed a lot, and we don’t always focus on the good changes. What’s something you think has really improved?

Personally: I love all the new UIs that have come in. Especially the start menu, I wince seeing the old start menu when I play other CM forks.

I genuinely can’t believe we used to play on the old start menus, it was so gross.

Tacmap, especially for new players.

I hate the new menu. Few weeks ago I needed to relog while we were still in lobby waiting for the round to start, I reconnected like 5 seconds before the start but because the menu takes a few second to play the fucking animation before showing you the buttons I couldn’t ready in time and missed my spec roll.

What changed for the best? Well, the game runs better…

I shilled for BYOND membership just to increase my rolling chances because I kept missing roundstart from ads

As for improvements from old CM? Well, I guess things don’t look like absolute dogshit nowadays. Old sprites were horrendously shit across the board. Old SS-13 xeno sprites shudders

You can actually disable that if you wish. Disabling cinema mode makes the menu instantly appear with no animation.

I have to say, having full auto on pulse rifles, smgs, and smart guns is nice.

In the old days people would fight over quick fire adapters (rip btw)

The horror, the horror.

Old marines sprites

Weapon sounds

Cic console overhaul definetely a big plus

Vendor UI.

It used to be just a complete whitescreen for me in like 2022 which made me stop playing marine and made me an evil xenomain. Making it all TG apparently made the issue go away.

Me when I manually fire all 500 bullets from my SG one by one before reloading them all handful by handful like I’m in PZ

Xeno damage sprites were a great quality of life addition. Its so nice to get visual feedback to know you are actually doing damage.

hotkeys.

You used to have to find out how to make a BYOND macro to pump your shotgun manually from the wiki. I played an embarassingly long time as a shotgun main before figuring this out.

There wasn’t a ‘pickup dropped item’ bind unless someone from the community shared their macro with you (which was super long and would lag the game every time it was pressed) I never even found out this was a thing until people talked about using it to steal pred’s weapons before they could pick them up in modern time.

So many things. I like that they split PO into DP and GP, I like that they added field doc, I like the whole CM on twitch and youtube and steam thing… the fact that you can authenticate without a byond account now is probably the most technically impressive thing to me, alongside relays… harry you’re awesome.

The tacmap is absolutely the true answer. I’ve got more than 800 hours and I still barely know where I’m going most of the time. Even when it’s out of date and unlabeled it’s just enough information to work with.

I had only started playing late 2022, but since then my favorite addition has been the BRUTE. Comtech and combat engineers as a role are usually my favorite in squad based games; the BRUTE allows you to reliably play comtech in a proactive and offensive manner instead of being relegated to just cades and sentries.

Uh oh. To try and find something that’s actually improved… I guess it’s gotta be the M39. Because it always alternated between being more or less useless and M41 but better. To the point I wasn’t sure if it’s even possible to have a distinct SMG in CM. But now I think it’s decently balanced. Maybe the only problem is that it’s slightly overshadowing pistols now, but it’s a minor gripe.

This is a good thing by the way, the SMG should overshadow pistols, pistols should be a backup/secondary, NOT a viable primary weapon as they are if you’re robust/sweaty with macros

is the dps on smg higher than mk2 up close? Cause it hits like a truck and you run fast with it.

^^^^ THIS, 100% THIS ^^^^

Needing to alt tab into your browser, then paste and open some random gyazo link that CIC announced was brutal!! The tacmap now is so SO much better! You get the live version you can hotkey, plus the one from the IC panel if you want to pop it out while being able to fight
