Why do people hate the fancy lighting?

Genuine question

I absolutely love it and ever since it was introduced I really couldn’t go back, old CM just looked weird to me after esp without ambient occlusion

I guess some people like the old one for sovl but I don’t see it that much, there’s certainly a charm for keeping old aesthetics in but some just don’t age too well

prob cause you can see less than before? Idk, but my only complain is the boats where they are wholly lit inside but there’s a wall of darkness right at the doors.

Eh personally I think its still an overall improvement but theres a lot of weird bugs with it like black squares persisting from time to time and some areas that aren’t lighted properly.

The lighting changes coincided with a reduction in light radius, they’re independent changes. You wouldn’t have to revert the lighting to see further, just adjust the light radius on flares, lamps, etc.

There’s some weirdness with the new lighting, it does look better, but there’s a couple differences:

  • Xenomorphs have it harder to see what light level something is, if you’re on 50% NVGs
  • Lighting is much more spherical instead of being extremely rough spheres so every light was basically nerfed with the update, see that even to this day there’s spots on the Almayer that are dark in areas that were previously bright. This is a minor and mostly annoying change.
  • It also affects when you can see an enemy, before you could see the entire tile lit up, so if the enemy was just barely on the tile, you would see them, now the lighting is a sphere and doesn’t cover full tiles (it might cover just a quarter or half of a tile) so if there’s an enemy just out of reach of the light you won’t see it.
  • Also directional armor light + armor light nerf were brought with it so it’s associated with it

marine lighting has generally been kneecapped over and over with the arguement that it’s more “atmospheric” or whatever but it’s generally just frustrating as fuck to try and fight an enemy you can’t see at all and these days even boxes of boxes of flares last like 10 seconds trying to light up a front so you can actually fight.

The new lighting in theory is the way to go but like others have pointed out there are some major bugs that came with it that haven’t been fixed since it came out. Now the bugs aren’t game ending and are kinda random/ugly but it isn’t as important as being able to reload a weapon for example.

I was working on releasing a lighting PR that addressed some of these issues like the black squares issue but tbh I kinda ran into some IRL issues and more or less stopped. Eventually it will annoy a developer enough or a random contributor like myself to fix the lighting to its intended state but for now its like… ehhhh…

Flares literally got buffed to both last longer and reveal 7 tiles

I spoke with many marines that believed this change was, in fact, a nerf to flares.

It probably lags PCs with bad hardware and CM has a looooot of players with bad hardware
but I speak outta my ass idk if it actually does lag bad pcs… it sounds like it does…
otherwise yeah it’s just soul…

dying light is cool but overall it leads to huge darkspots in your frontline as they go dim and reapplication of flares, leading to a weird situation where you have to throw new flares at still burning old ones.

I think this is a net positive, since that means you know what was flared previously so you can flare it again.

But yeah I am genuinely just so happy for ANY flare buff. 7 tile flare range my beloved, it’s possible to see Xenos again!

This lacks context. Flares haven’t always been 5-tile range, that was a nerf awhile ago, and then this slightly rebuffed them, but not by much.

It’s a bit disingenuous to only point at the nerfed state and say, “see we did buff these”. Flares were 6 or 7 tile range the entire time before this, AND they lasted longer.

I wasn’t playing back then, so there’s nothing disingenuous about my statement. As far as I was aware, it’s simply a buff to the way flares have behaved for more than a year.

Also, I’ve gone back and looked at old footage from 2 years ago and lighting looked like ass, sure it’s easier for combat but I wouldn’t want to go back to that.
