Add a high priority role indication?

Listen. I know that lowpop, or even midpop is not the most important thing. What I’m saying is that command staff should be able to designate up to three roles (this may vary) on the ship as a priority.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about from one of the servers on the hub:

I believe it to be an alright solution, considering that it doesn’t force any players into these roles, just highlights them.

Even on some midpop (or even highpop once in a blue moon) rounds lack researchers, or the sinlge researcher went to cryo and CMO (if there is one) is too busy dealing with hugged marines. Same goes for Cargo techs, who go to cryo or simply need more men to keep up with the workload. Also doctors, nurses, combat techs, etc. You get me. It would be a nice addition and there are clear use cases for it.

Absolutely 200% approve of this. You could even fluff it as “ARES Cryopod Defrosting Priority List” or some shit.

Maybe have it show what rolls players in the lobby have set to high. That way you always know if someone is going to play CMO or QM before the round starts.

This is for after the round starts, where command can highlight whether we need more medics / engis / FTLs et cetera.

Im a long term CIC player and I have several times sat and wished I could summon more of a certain role with a wave of my hand.

I additionally think some way to indicate prefered squad would be neat, but that would involve making it possible for late joins to view what squads are open for a role and specifically pick one which is a lot of back end work.

There have been days I specifically wanted Charlie Combat techs.

Interesting idea. However, it will probably require to revamp the way players choose squads in the first place. The preferences will need to only work on the roundstart . On latejoins people should pick squads manually. This way it would actually work somewhat smoothly.

you should add some mechanical or OOC incentive to doing this, like maybe a badge in OOC for joining a high pri role 25/50/100 times, otherwise most people probably will choose whatever role they wanted to play anyways, and only bored, new, or indecisive players will ever pick it

I disagree. There should be no “mechanical” incentive for this. Besides, it doesn’t even need one. I have played on a SS13 server where this system of highlights (screenshot on the original post) is implemented, and it works just fine. People join highlighted role as intended.

Again, I must clarify: it’s not a “summon that role button”. It’s not the intended purpose. It’s for making clear to latejoins that these roles are needed, that’s all.

My experience also suggests otherwise. Plenty of people join games and choose a role on whim, or want to shake up the experience. As stated by me earlier, I’ve played quite a lot (650 hours) on a server with this system, and no problems arise there whatsoever. It gets the job done.

I agree with the author that such a thing would be needed and useful. I usually roll spec. And smartgunner and if i dont get them then i wait in lobby for like 2-5min to see which department is short staffed and join that (excluding CIC and MP roles)

Im not sure this is totally needed but might encourage it being used.

Perhaps just an extra line of text on any play time medals they have.

Rapid response trained/Critical response trained/Priority 1 operations trained or something more imaginative.

Different coloured medal ribbon?

Honestly knowing what roles everyone is rolling for lets me know if its even worth rolling something.

If I see 5 people putting XO on High, I am just going to put my Medium slot on CT for that round since no one is rolling it or very few are.

High priority slots after the round starts is fine as well, but I feel like the former would be used more than the latter.

When goon added this feature as well, I found myself picking up roles I know how to play but generally don’t play very often, like Security, or head of personnel. It just gives players joining the round what the marines might be lacking.

Maybe there is a CLF on the ship, and there is no MPs, so the XO puts a MPs needed up. Wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Showing what roles people put on high is an interesting idea. However, I never saw something like this implemented before outside of an obscure hellhole server.

Besides, the feature you are talking about it’s not really what I’ve suggested, It’s more of it’s own thing and is offpoint a bit. It’s about when round is already in progress.

I disagree. For many people, including me, seeing high number of rolls on certain jobs might not discourage from rolling it at all. For others - it will instead fend them off from trying something new, just because the role is in high demand in that particular moment.

Solid idea. I see no reason not to implement.
