two QoL changes I think would be nice. The IA sub title would work like surgeon, mostly to tell command you prefer processing intel rather than gathering it.
The intel pamphlet would allow a rifleman to do punch cards if they want, as the people who can are almost always pre occupied with something more important
I’d finally be free from having to play ASO to be able to enjoy my beautiful intel processing.
I like the idea of the intel pamphlet, though I do find it a bit funny that the intel “kit” as it stands has to be bought by the IOs rather than the riflemen that now and then volunteer for the team.
Very good change. When there isn’t an ASO most of the time I see intel not being processed so a role dedicated to it would be great.
I also think generally the ASO should have better things to do but that’s just me. They’re like the third in command of the entire vessel, not the head of intelligence, and having IOs do it in-house would make more sense imo.
I NEED THIS.
I am one of those weirdos who loves sorting and dealing with intel processing.
Just vibing around the lab, roleplaying with others, chilling while being important? Hell yeah!
You’ll be frowned upon if you take IO and just stay shipside the entire round and as ASO you have so many responsibilities that I don’t find it too enjoyable most of the time. I just wanna chill in the computer lab man. This really needs to be separate role.
This IA could:
-Process intel
-Move corpses
-OW Intel squad
-Decryptions
I too would love this role. After ASO was added it felt like half the IOs job was effectively removed, and I had to deal with someone that could outright veto whatever I wanted to do shipside. So IO turned into full combat/find Waldo ground side, with no rewarding and relaxing sorting.
I’d rather see SO get the Intel Analyst alternate title. You could even include comms decryption under their envelope of responsibilities and throw that machinery into the Intel Lab somewhere. Every IO wanting to chill out shipside is another IO that isn’t on the ground. Getting volunteers to accompany IOs is difficult enough, so for every IA chilling shipside is 1 less IO that can die before command can expect to never see another point of Intel generated. If I see 3 of these fuckers I am going to skin all of them.
IOs are needed on the ground as nobody else has the same job expectations (skill set and gear to a lesser extent), even though nothing really stops anybody from reading papers they find on the ground (FTLs and SLs I am pretty sure get intel1). Squad marines queue up to shoot xenos. IOs, as they are now, are the only role who queue up to do a map wide scavenger hunt to provide command players with intel points.
sure, but we are also very limited on staff officers, and each one processing intel is one not keeping CO/XO up to date, firing OBs, coordinating supply drops, etc….
The gameplay expectation of SOs is that they will be shipside, with the exception to this being deployed to the field.
The gameplay expectation of IOs is that they will be in the field, with the exception to this being shipside to process.
Staff Officers are already expected to, in the absence of appropriate personnel shipside, fill in for any role. Req, Engineering, and especially Intel Processing.
There exists no equivalent fill-role to replace an IO.
I genuinely dislike ASO’s processing intel because when I want to do it they start trying to push me out of my own job.
I’m in favor of it specifically because ASO’s step on my toes too much on Intel. Do overwatch? Nah ASO is there to tell me to deploy, and then of course, doesn’t do any overwatch at all. I had no problems processing intel before ASO and I won’t have any trouble doing it after.
Ideally the job is kept around and just stops interfering on intel stuff, but if it did go, I’m not gonna miss it.
I feel like that’s more of a problem with ASO players than ASO itself. You could always specifically ask them to leave you alone, we usually do with the other three departments already, and intel is basically the only one we ever take special interest in unless req is unmanned
Personally, when I play Auxiliary Support Officer I’d be more than willing to leave an IO to process Intel if they asked. I’ve historically been under the impression that IOs preferred being in the field and having the ASO process intel. If there’s an IO that wants to process intel, all power to them, I’ll go off and find something else to do.
As IO, i have been told by ASOs to fuck off out of the lab and that my job is deploying, when I explicitly ask. Ive been told the same even if Im the IO that started the round and has been handling it for an hour when the ASO latejoins. Is this an issue with the players? Sure, sort of. But once you do introduce a higher-ranked head into the structure over the department, that in itself already implies something about who should be doing what and where. CE suffers much the same (“go deploy that’s your job now, to deploy, and make our FOB for us”). Req, less so because people genuinely hate req enough to not want to pick it up if there’s a QM/CT and QMs im pretty sure have ankle monitors on at all times that go off if they leave a 200 foot radius from around req.
As ASO, I usually find that experienced IOs deploy or stop asking to sort. Newer ones still come up to deposit their finds in-person and I ask them if they’d like to sort; often they’re excited about sorting and I leave them to it. It’s helpful also for them to just learn and figure out the sequence of the intel items for processing so they can also understand then groundside what kinds of things they need to be looking for.
But yea, I’d be down in a hypothetical world to have an extra IO role with this flavor specifically locked in. This is also the world where ASO would be removed, which will never happen.
