Add the Field Commander from TGMC

I know I said I’d take a break from feedback posts, but this will be my last one for a while, because I think it would be a good addition given recent events.

Also to get this started, I am not a TGMC player. CM13 and TGMC are different, with CM13 being more focused on immersion and roleplay, while TGMC is basically an arcade pvp.

But one thing from TGMC I think would be a great addition to CM13 would be the field commander role.

The field commander role would be simple. They would be the highest authority groundside. Because the marine meta is ungaballing (meaning alpha, charlie, and delta move as one squad), the field commander would be a great role to rally the three squads to where they need to go.

In terms of authority, the Field Commander would be roughly on par with SOs in terms of marine ranking, but above SLs.

You may argue that squad leaders act as the field commanders, but their main problem is a lot of them are new and they are easily disposable. The field commander would be a harder role to unlock, maybe even a whitelist.

But a good field commander would set out to improve morale, lead big pushes against the xenomorphs, and help CIC a lot with giving information and feedback about groundside, basically being a big advocate for groundside marines.

The difference between field commanders and squad leaders is basically this. Squad leaders are responsible for their squad as a whole, while field commanders are responsible for the entire groundside operation. How is intel doing? Are JTAC and mortars getting good hits? Are those OB coordinates really safe? How is alpha, delta, charlie, AND bravo as a whole? They would oversee all squad leaders and would help CIC a lot with groundside information, as I have mentioned.

Given how there’s been some pushback against COs frontlining, I think the field commander would be a nice substitution. Marines really like having a good leader groundside to lead them as a whole, and I think the field commander role would be a nice addition for this.

(Amira Young gave me this idea btw, shoutouts to them)

I’d like your feedback.

sounds like a combat version of the ASO, and i think faces the same issues. a lot of times i see ASOs neglect the full potential of their role, leading to a lot of people seeing it as bloat. and without a properly defined role, much like ASO (even though it does have a purpose) it will not be utilized. From a gameplay perspective, you can deploy as an SO an act in this capacity already. I have seen Amira do so

We have field commanders. They’re called SLs.

Yeah I already do this when I aCO now-a-days.

I make sure to yell/announce/and otherwise emphasise that one of the Squad Leaders, has ground command and the marines should flock to them, just to make sure they have a beacon to follow around so they know they’re going in the right direction without needing to read a paragraph of orders.

But I don’t think we need a specific role to do this, or need to do this all the time either.

every time i play marine i make sure not to listen to squad leaders cause i know it isnt worth my time and ill be a dead corpse on the ground while the SL gets captured :herbert:

Correct. I respectfully disagree with this idea good sir.

SLs are Squad leaders, not field commanders. A Field commander is basically the XO, but deployed. (which, as a person who plays XO, has a lot of benefits). Although I would love to have a field commander role for it to be added, I feel like there would need to be a complete overhaul of the Officer team, IE, XO, CO, ASO, as so much would change because of a dedicated commander groundside. Already in the last week, I have seen almost every CO that has played deploy first drop (which in my opinion is bad). So there would be a much needed rework for every other role for this to be added.

Deploy an SO groundside, tell marines to rally on them. If they refuse to do that then you wouldn’t get much out of a field commander role anyways.

There is no point in trying to copy and adapt something to CM just because that works in TGMC. If you are seriously advocating such a thing, you have not yet understood what CM is.

In today’s armies, there can’t be two commanders in a Battalion. You don’t take orders from one in the field and from another on the ship. You say They would be the highest authority groundside, in a Battalion there is only one commander and the subordinates receive the orders from a single officer. Those under the CO are only responsible for making the order more applicable and relaying it to those under them and/or executing it. I don’t have a military background IRL, but CM had staffers with different experiences, and even though they made many changes, if they did not find such a thing necessary, I am sure that such a thing will not happen in the future.

Do you want to be a Field Commander? Deploy if you’re playing XO or CO, congratulations you are now a Field Commander!
