As title says: let SGs carry a weapon on their back, like a rifle, flamer, or shotgun for a backup weapon.
More guns is more fun, plus it would be funny as fuck seeing an SG carry an m56d.
You could also make this a buyable armor from SG vendors for like 45 points, with all the same stats but the only difference being a back slot for guns.
If we’re going by movie accuracy, one of the smartgunners carries an M240 flamethrower with him, you can see it in the scene where they escape to the APC. He ditches his smartgunner kit for the flamethrower after it runs out of ammo (or jams).
I don’t think this is a good idea, I mean, if you REALLY wanted to, you could juggle a gun+smartgun.
Letting SGs use their Smartgun AND another gun with ease is a terrible idea.
The smartgun is designed to be weaker than a regular gun on average, but more powerful overall in the hands of someone competent. Put bluntly, the majority of people kind of suck at using the smartgun to its fullest potential. If you switch modes perfectly, you will have amazing round impact. You won’t be as good as a spotter with a Mk2 in direct combat, but you’ll be able to shoot at anytime, so you’re still having more round impact.
Can you grab a MK2 and frag out anyways, right now? Yes, you can- and it’s pretty damn effective at killing bugs. Problem? It’s an absolute pain in the ass so you’ll probably give up because there’s nowhere to store the rifle- Ultimately, it’s a pretty big trade off.
An SG should currently switch on frontline mode whenever they have LoF (the majority don’t do this). That’s 20 AP @ 300 RPM. A rifle? 33 AP @ 240 RPM.
If you let them carry a rifle with ease, you’ve just raised every SGs DPS by about 35% in that situation. It’s far too strong- Every bit of DPS matters, because xenos either live or die. They don’t suffer from health-based attrition like fractures, you either kill them or you don’t.
4 extra spotters running around but ALSO having never-ending IFF guns and free MDs slapped on is a horrifying concept.

anyway SG doesn’t really need to be able to carry more guns and generally I think powercreeping the SG’s back slot is stupid (the reason they can’t wear back stuff is because originally they had to wear the powerpack backpack, but when that got removed and consolidated they kept the back slot restriction)
being able to easy bring other guns also encourages to just use the nvgs to try and frag out etc.
really sg probably needs a full overhaul since right now its a bit of a confused role imo
As it stands that’d be op. Although I am in favor of letting Marines carry sidearms without compromising their kits the game is not in a place to let this happen since it’ll only make fragging easier.
What i wouldn’t give to have my dual firing targeting rifle with insane ammo capacity for a sniper and freakish dps here…finally i can give up on skill completely and let my gun truly do the work…
Idk multiple SGs sounds good in theory but it’s hard to create two guns that aren’t too same-y (HMG and LMG SGs on TGMC have minimal damage differentials when crunched, one just uses a backslot and one doesn’t), or too overpowered and potentially creeping on some other restricted role (SG rifle was just faster-firing slightly lower dmg AMR there)
More back option utilities would be cool, though. MRE or flare box SG…
