Helmets also have the best looking gasmask available to PFCs
You can go a step further and just put the camera in the uniform, boom problem solved. Command gets to see their stuff and everyone else gets focus on playing the game or heaven forbid some actual RP which you’ll get when people feel like they’re playing actual characters rather than another cog in the amorphous marine blob.
Also for what its worth most of the helmet cosmetics like feathers/headbands are hard to see when slapped on a helmet or rather are far less visible compared to just wearing a beret/headband. There ARE some options like the netting which are very visually different but if everyone is essentially forced into using helmets then remove the other options or just standardise the stats and bedone with it. Give all the marine headwear armour and decap protection or none of it and rework the decap mechanic as a whole since it’s a terrible RNG fest anyway which either removes you instantly from a round or is never seen.
PFCs not wearing helmets are fine, and they’re the majority of marines. They have the freedom to wear no armor and go into battle while wearing nothing but a headband and toting a heavy machine gun while spouting stale Rambo lines, or dual M4A3s, and so-on.
The majority of the gripes in this thread have been regarding the special roles such like Smartgunner, who already exist in the same space as departmental chiefs where you get more powerful tools and skills in exchange for higher expectations. That’s about sixteen people in a round expected to wear helmets.
If the SG is gonna get decapped because he refused to wear a helmet that is his fault. The players who are already not wearing helmets aren’t gonna suddenly just start wearing them. Me as a SO is never going to get the SL or FTL to wear a helmet because i tried and it didn’t work.
You can say they are being special little boys all you want but it isn’t going to change the fact that they don’t care and if anything are gonna say “Yes i am special and better then you! You are just being bossy! I shall not wear my helmet!”
Armor cameras are just QOL because unless we make RP rules more enforced then it’s never going to happen where every single marine wears a helmet. The reality is people want to wear berets and bandanas and boonies becauses its cool so its best to let it happen and then just allow OW to have this QOL change.
The MPs who’re currently experiencing powertrip withdrawal:
Wear your fucking helmets.
Any marine who is not wearing a helmet that walks up to me and complains about fractures, I will put them at the end of my triage list, even below the guy who just cut their foot with a knife by accident.
I hear you, I just think with a mechanical change this whole argument becomes mute. I always wear a helmet (Unless there’s a PMC cap since it has armour and decap protection) but if folks want to spend their points for a headband because it gets them in character then I’m all for it.
The icon next to your character sprite doesn’t represent your character but the clothes you wear sure do, its usually the one thing that folks keep consistant across roles that keeps them noticable so of course if thats not a helmet then well they ain’t wearing a helmet as it should be.
Personally, I see helmet cameras as being yet another reason to wear helmets, and another risk you assume if you wear a non-standard issue headware.
There is nothing stopping you from wearing a beret or cap (unless you are the SL), but you assume the risk the SO will never be overwatching you and will not be able to effectively coordinate your recovery if you die or get dragged off to oblivion. Amongst the other risks of course.
never in my few hundred hours of playing CM have i noticed a feather, cigarettes or anything besides the horrendous rain cover attachment on a helmet. maybe in another few hundred i’ll start to notice that single pixel
that being said, and to reiterate my point: helmet alternatives do exist in the game. people will always use them and fight tooth and nail to be different. you don’t like that? make a PR that removes anything that isn’t a helmet and if that goes through people will start wearing nothing at all instead.
I’ve seen SLs, XOs and even COs deploy without a helmet and a few among them are the best god damn players that i would follow into death any day of the week, which i guess is why noone “chews them out”, because they’ve got the skill and reputation to make up for their “flaw”
at the end of the day CM is still supposed to be a roleplaying game in a fantasy space setting based on a few movies and other sources. Those movies are made for the drama, the entertainment and the stories of the characters, even if they end in a miserable end.
To me that is what CM should be, that is what CM should strive to be.
And as a final point in this topic, i fail to see any real reason being mentioned anywhere why amour cameras would be a bad change. all i’ve seen sofar is a whole lot of pent up anger because some people do not confirm with the vision someone has as to how the game should be.
oh and a lurker main who’s just vibing in the corner i suppose.
For those just arriving in the thread:
tl;dr
People won’t use helmets because they want to rp. Despite the downsides.
Some of those people are: Medics, Comtechs, Fireteam Leaders, Squad Leaders, Inteligence Officers, Staff Officers, Executive Officers and Command Officers.
Overwatch needs cameras.
CIC in general needs cameras.
Why not put cameras in armor?
considering what marines get up to in lore, maybe those bodycams should stay off…
ironically forcing MPs to wear headgear is what made me quit MP, i loved pointing out in particular detail the part of SOP that did not require me to wear a helmet or hat as MP to upset COs and CMPs
The byproduct of not wearing a helmet should be both a punishment in CIC’s capacity to save you, as well as your lower defense. Giving more leeway for a player to make a poor IC decision is bad.
And yes I know only some of them wore helmets in the movie.
- That’s because the movie cares more about the character’s looking cool.
- None of you are cool enough to be members of 2nd Battalion Bravo Team.
Wear a helmet.
one thing i will never understand is just what is being added to a discussion by attempts to demean other participants, reminding them that they’re not “cool enough”, important or special in any way.
the point being made here is to ease the burden of performing your role adequately as a staff officer, despite other players choices.
this in return would lead to reduced conflict and frustration between command and marines, leading to an overall better experience for everyone involved, yet apparently that is not as important as punishing players who go against the optimal loadout in favour easy and obvious recognition in the game where the only thing that carries over between rounds is the rapport you’ve built in the community.
slowmode edit reply to below:
a fair point, i will concede that, even if it that was not the intent i gathered from it
(i need sleep and can’t wait an hour to post again heh)
Humor? It’s a fairly obvious joke.
You are already disadvantaged not wearing a helmet because of decaps and lower storage. Hats having no cams most often only punishes CIC players instead of the marine themselves.
CIC rarely actually uses helmet cams to get people rescued, they can just read the location of the corpse, and it’s position to the SL. It’s actual use is so CIC have a visual on the front, something that PFCs don’t really give a shit about, most of them barely follow orders anyways.
In short: cams don’t really matter for the individual marine, therefore I don’t see why CIC players should be punished for the choices of other players
The breath mask fits on the mouth slot so its not related to helmets
There is an helmet accessory gasmask being similary useless as the normal gasmask but looking way cooler
Additionally, if someone is dead, it is because most of the time they are in dark, walled, far away places. If lights stayed on bodies, sure, but they turn off when you die.
Helmets gives no advantage in finding bodies other than to confirm those bodies are found and you can just worry about something else.
I also don’t think saying “they are putting themselves at a disadvantage for not being overwatched” is a good point. Many times my SO has done jack shit to be noticeable and I usually rely on the XO or CO for confirmation to tell me what to do. If i ask a question i can trust the CO or XO to answer the question more than my SO.
The entire point of body cams instead of helmet cams is just so that SOs who are actually active and good aren’t put at a disadvantage because 1/4th of the squad decided not to wear helmet and just simply ignore you and do their own thing.
Saying to put on your helmet for the OW advantage heavily relies on being given a advantage for doing that and even with this knowledge we shouldn’t punish SO players because unga marine who also has 1000 hours of playtime still dosen’t want to wear his helmet.
What I enjoy the most (not) is when someone screams “HELP!” *dies
Overwatch TGUI: Marine (NO HELMET) 18 NE BUMFUCKALL-DONTKNOWHERE
Yes, I can still locate the dead, but I cant see what attacked him. Could be anything. If I send a lone marine or medic there to go check chances are its going to die too. So I dont. I only warn about the place the marine died and hope for the best.
