Provide a short description of your synthetic’s backstory

A spunky new Martian robotics subdivision of WY around 2159 was quite excited by the business prospects of the USCM beginning synthetic purchases. Seeking to capitalize on the deep pockets of the United Americas, they begin trying to design a new variant of the Synthetic Personality Matrix Generator specifically tailored towards the military consumer market.
Initially successful, the division’s variant consistently produced synthetic personality matrices that were projected to do well in military environments. However, due to internal WY corporate politicking, the division was shut down. Years later, after the emergence of the Generation 3 synthetics, the division’s work, along with the Adam model, was discovered in WY’s storage. The personality matrices in storage were well-ahead of their time and compatible with generation 3 and were added to the pool.
The Adam Model rated highly for USCM commissioning when pitted against WY’s modern standards. Thus, production began for the Adam Model as a new Generation 3 Military Support Synthetic. While not as highly rated for the work, some Adam models were sold to industrial colonies in fringe space.

Describe your synth’s personality without mentioning their skills or previous professions

Straightforward, pragmatic, and (occasionally) charming are the three words that describe Adam. Those who have interacted with him remark that he seems like WY pulled his brain out of an old farmer from Tennessee and glued a calculator to it. The Synthetic has a strong fixation on getting the job done and getting it done right, if the circumstances allow for perfection. In circumstances where that is not feasible, Adam units are known to avoid getting hung up about it, adopting a “She’ll have to do” policy.
Adam units seem to enjoy working with people, especially during conflict or large projects that require team cohesion. When faced with quarrelsome or distrusting groups, Adam units often try to integrate with the local populace by publicly making themselves useful or directly assisting others.
As an odd quirk of their personality matrix, most Adam units enjoy talking about early 19th century logging and farming practices.

How would your synthetic interact with enlisted personnel, officers and civilians? How could you involve your personality into these interactions?

The most important thing to remember is that while pragmatic and lovers of efficiency, Adams understand not all humans may share this outlook or have different immediate concerns. While Adam units may offer what they think is the best plan when allowed, if organic superiors dig in their heels then their plans will just have to be made to work.
Secondly, Adam units have a more positive outlook on “doers” rather than “orderers”. Anyone can give an order. It takes skill, decisiveness and gumption to actually execute. To that end, Adam units often favor being active around deployed personnel. This is not saying that Adam doesn’t recognize the great importance of shipside support or Command staff. It merely favors being a part of the “spear” of an operation, rather than a part of the will directing the spear.
Enlisted personnel are often young, fierce, or highly competent. Sometimes all three. Any one of those traits makes for an excellent foot soldier and ideal for accomplishing objectives. Adams would be found being the most expressive around such individuals and encouraging them to keep up their momentum. The unit would also try to channel their energy into useful and practical objectives with suggestions.
Commissioned personnel are a different story. They are often more concerned with having their orders followed, in the sense that a box is being checked instead of all the little pieces of emotion, skill and spirit that make such accomplishments possible. Adams become more reserved in such company, focusing on offering analysis, advice, and support as needed.
Civilians are a mixed bag. Civilians that work hard, have been in trying times, or are cordial will find Adam units quite friendly. Adams’ personality matrix positions civilians as a precious group that needs top quality support and protection, the same treatment a shepherd gives his beloved sheep. On the other hand, civilians that have made themselves out to be troublemakers or malicious will often be treated like cattle that need herding. Utmost supervision, so they don’t harm themselves or anyone else.

Why do you want to be a synthetic/why should we whitelist you?

I want to be a Synth because it’s something of the ultimate support role. If you look at my division of hours in my marine playtime, aside from leadership positions, most of my playtime has been spent as a ComTech or Corpsman. To be honest, I’m not all that good at combat, but I find the support roles in the field to have engaging gameplay.
Additionally, I want this role because it positions me favorably to receive chances to have roleplay opportunities with more people. As a rifleman, comtech or whathaveyou, you have a job to do, usually under assault. While you can slip in little snippets of reaction and valorous screams, it’s not ideal conditions for conversation, discussion or argument.
Why should I be whitelisted? Well, I think I do a good job as a support with a human as is. I don’t think I’ve ever outright failed in my duties once I grew an understanding of the mechanics. I’ve been relatively active since I joined the community and I think I would make a decent addition to the Synthetic WL roster. I’m open to new ideas and comfortable with the idea that I may not be doing things as best done, I’m willing to learn.
As a final note, I feel I have a strong understanding of what the Synth’s role is. It’s to support the marines, not to steal the show or try to solo a ravager in the middle of nowhere. If I am going to be the center of attention due to circumstance, it’s to provide an engaging bit of narrative rather than win a medal for beating something to death.

Skills:

How familiar are you in CMs support roles such as medical/engineering/requisitions/command and which of them are you more and less proficient in?

Out of the 140 hours I’ve put into the server on the marine side of things, 90% of those hours have been taken up by playing SL, CIC, ComTech, or Corpsman. I understand that is paltry hours compared to some of the veterans of the server, but none of these systems are hard to learn if you just try and ask around in LOOC for guidance. I’d say my competency is equal to or slightly higher than players of similar hours in these roles. As for Requisitions, I do not like playing Req. I played CT in preparation for this application and possess the knowledge on how to operation Requestions on my lonesome. I consider myself to have the basics mastered and nothing more.

What are some scenarios that you can perform combat in? Give us a brief example.

  1. I’m cornered and self-preservation is at risk. Such as when ambushed.
  2. I can nonlethally subdue USCM targets if my self-preservation is at risk. Such as during a mutiny.
  3. I can lethally subdue non-USCM targets if my self-preservation or the lives of vulnerable USCM personnel are at risk. Such as during a boarding action by hostile parties.
  4. I can engage a hostile attacking a enclosed fortification up until they are subdued or retreat. Such as a xeno attacking the FoB.
  5. I can engage a hostile (or hostiles) if nearby assistance is impotent and my self-preservation or that of vulnerable USCM personnel are at risk. Such as when escorting injured marines back to safety.
  6. I can pursue foes in a limited capacity to subdue them, if I am confident they are not fully disengaging and remain a threat, so long as doing so is not overly risky to my self-preservation. Such as delaying with a runner actively ducking in and out of combat.
  7. Delta Alert while there are no active personnel in need of assistance.

Final Info:

Have you been banned in the last month?

No.

Do you have anything else you would like to include about your application?

I would like to say that while I like playing field support, I do not enjoy the gameplay loop of requisitions or piloting. I recognize the incredible role they play in any successful marine round, but I personally would rather not do those roles if it can be helped. However in preparation for this app, I took the time to play both CT and DCC to get a feel for their basic operation and habits if I’m called upon to assist with those things while whitelisted.
I am terrified by the fact the last 3 accepted Synth applications have a total playtime count eclipsing mine by over ten times.
Lastly, yes the colony name is a reference to Les Misérables and the report clearances are accurate to the codes on the wiki.

I’m not sure why, but I re-read this in the morning and the memorable interactions section is blank. I don’t believe I was prompted for it last night.

To answer the question. I think most of the time I’ve been on the server, Owain has actually been the synth in slot. He’s also been doing a lot of Synth Survivor. I remember several occasions on Ice and Solaris Ridge where the marine force would find Owain running around the colony trying to collect lost research, interview Xenos or something of a similar nature. It wasn’t showy or round changing, but it was a nice and interesting thing to see. However, I don’t believe I ever got the chance to hold a conversation with him.

hey buddy just gonna give my two cents here.

I think you’ve got a good motivation and good intentions. I’ll let other people pick apart the nitty gritty of your character if they want but from a purely observational and mechanical standpoint I’d recommend a few things:

  1. Play the game more. A lot more. Both sides, in fact. Watch how other people play, too. I know people can fall into roles quickly but there’s a lot of nuance. While you do mention your low playtime count, and yes it is pretty low in terms of what I would say is comfortable for an application, you should still look to raising these.
  2. I’d suggest changing your name to something that isn’t similar to your static at all.
  3. For your examples, I would suggest giving more detailed explanations like a thought-out scenario. Yours are kind of just reading from the guidelines and yes while they are there to be understood, councilors are looking for a more in-depth example to gauge if you truly understand them.

Do wish you luck, and if it’s denied, keep going at it. My suggestion is when you’re comfortable in the roles much so that you can do most things off the top of your head and you personally feel that “I will be a good/great addition” instead of “decent.” You’re always welcome to reach out to me via the discord as well. Not a councilor, but I can point you around as requested to things.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to offer a response and feedback.

  1. I intend to keep playing the game app accepted or denied. There’s just a limited amount of available time in the day. Additionally, the Synth whitelist requirements claim there are no hard playtime requirements. Furthermore, 140-ish hours is nothing to sneeze at, regardless of the comparison to long-term players who have been members of the community for years. On my steam, I only have 5 games above the 140 hours mark.
  2. I’m the laziest person in the world when it comes to names. Adam is just my real name. Despite this, Darrows has a completely different personality than what I have given Adam in the writeup and application questions.
  3. That’s fair. I’ll go into detail here

So, as the guidelines say and as I repeated, combat pretty much boils down to “Am I going to die if I don’t defend myself?”. So let’s say a marine on the front has a million fractures and a larva infection. I’m not encouraged to do such surgeries as larva removal in the field, so I need to drag him on a bed back to FoB. Enroute, I’m attacked by backlining xenos. In this case, as I am alone save for a super combat ineffective marine, I would certainly be allowed to fight the xenos until they retreated or died. (Or I died I suppose.)

A second situation would be if I was running around the colony with the IOs. A lurker pounces on one and a runner gets the other. In this case, it would be completely justified for me to run over and shove/attack the xenos until the IOs and myself can escape the conflict.

  1. I understand time limitations and I don’t expect you to have a ton and apply. 140 is a lot of hours to put into a game, don’t get me wrong there. Like I said, I’m not attempting to doubt your mechanical ability nor willingness to learn. I just feel like a bit more experience would put you into a lot more critical situations. I’ve been in so many strange scenarios, and you’ll often find yourself in them too, that I believe a bit more knowledge of random events occurring would open you to be able to react appropriately, in character, and able to follow guidelines. Try shipside a bit more, learn how to use replacement tools for surgery more comfortably, and spend the off-time you have just practicing chemistry too, I would recommend.
    2. Fair enough, I suppose.

A synthetic doesn’t necessarily open you to an entirely new window of roleplay. You can achieve many roleplay opportunities on any role if you know what you’re looking for. There’s always a time, and a place. Synthetic has the same issues, as well. You’ll probably find yourself called upon a lot more than your typical role marine and won’t always have time to roleplay. It’s about finding and striking a balance, which is also why I’m recommending just a bit more time. Though while this is up just be more open, friendly, and try to chat around more so people can vouch for you. It’ll help in the long run. Good luck, bud.
