well, as much as I’d love to run that… I have not gotten the opportunity to play one of them. If you have a video (ideally from observer perspective) it would help in getting a good idea of how to run one ![]()
Generally its setup as predators sending down massive groups of humans to form tribes out of departments, locations, or just clothing colour. This usually ends up with people starting wars with other tribes for an hour or two. Sometimes people are able to respawn during the period.
The combat was basically like if you were playing dayz. You didn’t know if the people walking by you are either just going on a journey or coming to murder you and rob you.
A notable round of tribes in my memory was when feweh was running it. The round had gone on for two hours or so and a literal army of hellhounds were released onto the grounds. This made all the tribes unite and push back the hellhounds, ending the round. It was really cool.
these events are not run… they run themselves… unfortunately i cannot provide you with a video but i can instead recount my experience of a tribes round about 4 years ago
the round started normally, everybody spawned from the cryo beds, this was not supposed to happen. people rushed to grab guns from prep, some of them got them before we were all teleported to a 1x1 metal box in the lobby space, and as a result of our greed to get guns we had everything taken from all of us (even though everybody is supposed to start with nothing anyway), i managed to hide a pistol in my hand but the admin noticed and deleted it…
after a few minutes of this, we were all randomly teleported across the map naked. I managed to find a crowbar, which was extremely lucky since I was able to open nearby crates and find a USCM uniform, marking me as one of the most dominant players in the local area. i then proceeded to craft some wooden baseball bats and a metal baseball bat for myself. around this time, i saw a player wandering around aimlessly asking, ‘whats going on’, in that time i was basically von so i killed and decapitated him, storing his head in my satchel. i then went on to proselytize 3 other people into my gang, giving them wooden baseball bats (bear in mind i was still the ONLY one wearing a uniform), and we became a roving gang of murderers. we straight up killed one guy, and another guy we tried to pressure into joining but he refused… so i killed and decapitated him too. after collecting 5 heads from the 2 people i killed and 3 random corpses (other people were also murdering people randomly, one guy died in the acid river cuz it was trijent). we roved around a bit as marauders, stumbling across the ‘bar gang’, who had about 7 people in the trijent bar, all barricaded up. i wanted to KILL THEM but there was too many of them…
eventually, we stumbled across a predator, who i presented my collection of heads to as an offering. he accepted, and took me to the pred ship to give me a clan sword but FUCKING FORGOT TO TAKE ME BACK… i’ll never know what happened to my gang members, since the admins hadn’t enabled the actual gang formation yet… eventually i got teleported back down by an admin (i dont think i could get to the rest of the pred ship for some reason), and was excited to use my CLAN SWORD (there are no guns in tribes), but was promptly brutally murdered by an admin-spawned hyper xeno monster. super fun round
here are the CORE TENETS of a tribes round, in my opinion:
FFA. Griefing rules are OFF for everyone, including Predators, who act as free agents throughout the round to sow chaos, they must find within themselves also the ability to not go around killing everyone. predators are core to the experience!
NO GUNS. melee only. guns are only spawned by admins near the end as things devolve into utter chaos, which is the next step
THINGS GET WORSE AS TIME GOES ON. initially, you may be scared for your life, alone and without a gang as King Von and others wander around killing people they come across. after a while, gangs are enabled using cult mechanics or something, basically the leader gets the cloak and can invite people who have to accept. once your gang forms, if you’re peaceful, you hang around and try to loot stuff (admins usually spawn things across the map randomly without announcements) this is the quiet period… eventually, after about an hour, admins spawn more and more brutal shit. we’re talking, gladiators, mega-xenos who are basically unkillable slaughterers, any kind of things, zombie hordes. the point is after a certain amount of time people from dchat get respawned as crazy powerful monsters, and anybody left alive has to try to stay alive. ITS NOT FAIR. THATS THE POINT.
anybody who remembers more PLEASE add. i love tribes
bear in mind, this was a long time ago, pop was probably lower back then. idk how well the people randomly griefing eachother will go down if there’s too many people in dchat, so many like corey said it’ll need respawns too
check it out, i found an imgur album on reddit from a tribes event from even longer agoCM Tribes - Album on Imgur
was it like a gamemode that could be chosen like hunter games is? or did admins just manually set everything up
Manually set up, at least when I played.
we should never run tribes again to give newer players fomo whenever it gets talked about
Can’t remember if it was manually set up when I last played but it is an actual game mode, its currently outdated and not in use iirc.
Last I played it was 2019 in big red and it was phenomenal
was this the round where lambda had a dwarf fortress tribe??? i also remember we ran one on prison that i remember having a lot of fun with.
i think the closest thing to capturing that vibe recently was the last hybrisa greenshift which n ded up being my favourote rounds of all time ![]()
It had to be two…maybe three years go… but we did a tribes round on LV.
We all got teleported to hydro with what we had on us when we woke. I remember running to medical to grab basic medic gear. I then proceeded to wander around terrified and alone into to the caves were I was flash banged and “adopted” into the Lake Tribe. We fought off numerous attempts to dislodge us from our little house north of the lake. The round proceeded in that fashion until a “Transport” landed at T-fort and made an announcement that it would evac survivors in 5 minutes but there were only 6 seats. The rounded descended into Hunger Games mode with tribes tearing themselves apart until launch. I managed to secure myself a seat 10 seconds before lift off, but with 5 seconds to spare I took a shotgun blast to my head killing me. My seat, stolen by a Lake Tribe member whom I had zapped back to life earlier in the round.
10/10 would run Tribes again and that says a lot seeing as how I avoid most event rounds.
we are a tribe irl, and that should be enough for you
Tribes is a social experiment used by the government to collect data.
My tribes round on Big Red went like this, spawned on the caves to the east and wondered around aimlessly (had no map knowledge at the time). Gathered weapons until I found my way to Virology and joined the Virology Tribe. Became an armed security for traders. Skirmished with other tribes all round and barely avoided death, my main weapon being a spear with a riot shield, riot armour.
Eventually as time passed and the more hostile tribes were wiped out Virology and engineering formed an alliance till we were the last two and absorbed survivors. Until the Staff caused an end of round event where we had to hold off against Hellhounds. We gathered resources around Virology and the surviving humans fought off Hell Hounds in one final stand.
I was never able to participate in a Tribes round but did observe a few. Things were wild and very entertaining.
