As we all know, CAS is pretty useless when the front moves into caves. However do they really need to be useless?
During Desert Storm the US Air Force deployed the GBU-28 Bunker Buster to destroy bunkers deep underground. Surely the Almayer has a modern equivalent lying around in storage right?
How it works:
Of course, it functions like any other missile and only works with direct fire. Flares and maybe even lasers (dunno how that’d work underground) is required to launch this. It’s basically just a thermobaric bomb that can go through a mountain (or any other roof).
Of course, it still won’t be able to punch through the resin roof of the hive core. Thoughts?
make it a coordinates bomb thrown by CAS that can only be acquired via points. It will essentially be a small HE OB but with lower and decent damage, lower TTT and effective against structures. A cheaper tool to break through chokes. A bunker buster if you will.
Marines already have a huge advantage on open ground with fire support, caves is one of the only places xenos can try and counteract this. Adding a weapon where xeno’s only “”““counter””“” is to give ground in what is meant to be some of their last lines of defense is ridiculous.
Despite all of this, there already exists explosives effective in aiding marines to push caves: grenades.
