Hello! This is Tewi, some of you may know me. Others might not. But important thing is.
As part of a project that will be released officialy, which will consist in a rp guide intended to change the overall atmosphere in-game and maybe boost the level of roleplay seen in-game. So there’s a good degree of interaction between players. Apart from whitelists which mainly hold together the standard of the Medium Roleplay label in most rounds.
I always thought that a cmss13 pvp, where roleplay is present and most people willingly decide to engage in would be quite wholesome.
So I’m asking what do you think could be added?
This what will be included so far.
-Aliens franchise lore rundown (Groups of interest, what they are and how they operate. Important events that have taken place. And certain people inside the universe.
-Covering misconceptions of lore that are commonly spread.
-Pointers and suggestions on how to write a character.
-Character backgrounds that you can use as worldbuilding/backstory for your character. All of them explained one by one.
-Life in the UA and UPP.
-How to generate roleplay instances and interact with other people.
–Making characters (not dissimilar to stuff I said in Marrone’s thread)–
For those who are Very Stumped, think about your favorite book, movie, TV show, and a character from it. Doesn’t need to be the main character.
How would you describe them? How would they describe themselves?
What do they want, or what conflicts do they have?
What do you like about them? What don’t you like about them?
You can take those elements to make your own person or make your own person more fleshed out. Even the things we don’t like about characters can help us in our designing, and these may even be fatal flaws or some of the best traits to RP with.
For those who are worried about how their character will be perceived or interacted with:
Play a bland but nice person first; establish a repoire for good RP and get familiar with feeling out how the average CM player will respond to different scenarios before you try out something more volatile.
Learn the boundary between an interesting asshole and an incessant asshole when making Flawed Characters. Would you ever be friends with this person? Maybe not. But would you at least ever be willing to talk to this person? If the answer to the second question is “no”, you’ve made the kind of mean guy who’s not interesting to talk to or interact with for other players and you should go back and revise.
The easiest way to revise meanness is to think about where it’s coming from. If you can boil it down to an issue with them, that usually is a good thing. If it’s always coming back to issues with other people, you’ll find that other people don’t enjoy being at fault for everything!
For those diving DEEP:
Moodboard. Clothing, colors, hairstyles, songs, random beads you find, whatever. Tangible bits that give corporeal sense to whatever you’re trying to convey.
–Tips/What to do–
I don’t think there’s a hard and fast “don’t ever do/say" this” for RP (rules compliant of course) since you never know what really can happen. Stuff that I do think is helpful is trying to pair mechanical actions and intents with something you want to communicate in that moment. Maybe it’s a line, maybe it’s a feeling.
Dare I even suggest BasilHerb’s picks aye guide is good for this, but it is! If there’s a consistent action you do and you want to take that opportunity to make it part of your character, then pair a line of text or an emote with it. This can even be really simple: create a line for whenever you’re pushing; make a custom emote for whenever you’re first loading a magazine in prep. Action + a cue on intent goes a long ways
As an example, sometimes I talk about “doing things my way/the USCM way” (especially when I talk to a CL). I have Show Held Item hotkeyed and I take that moment and that cue to unholster and raise my gun. This seems obvious, but for that matter, make sure you have Show Held Item hotkeyed and you know the keys to point at someone/something :+) these are very useful especially when you might be talking to a group and want to direct a comment at a specific person or thing.
I don’t know exactly what the “character backgrounds” would look like but i’m always happy to contribute stock backgrounds, if that’s what you mean. I wouldn’t be the best at integrating Alien lore into it but could help with geographies and educations and stuff
Operation Tychon Tackle is probably the biggest lore piece I’ve seen for setting the tone on marines side about what the Almayer forces are, and criminally isn’t on the wiki frontpage.
While probably a different project, xenos really need a RP guide as well. Everyone knows how to be a human, if not a marine, but no one really knows how to be a Xenomorph. Especially with how different they are between different media sources, and our own homebrew variant. Hell, just staff having different expectations of what xeno “low RP” is can lead to notes and confusion, while stifling any attempt at RP for fear of being bwoinked.
Got in spirit a rather “simpel” idea on what could be added that we dont got yet.
A short “quick start” rp guide.
Long and indeepth guides are usefull, but easily scare new players of.
If there was like, 1 page new players could read that gave em the basic knowledge to join and rp, that be ideal.
Removing the hurdles at the very start and all that jazz.
