Alright, I’ll do it. I’ll start working on the Encino app again.

Surely this time I won’t get surprise banned by a CO’s BFF again and unbanned after it was acknowledged as foul play just to close my app. That won’t happen again. Surely, after five years, that won’t happen. I’ll stay banned this time.

 :relieved:

Maybe it would help if it wasn’t 1 person using all their toon slots to have nothing but co’s

CO is just so much more tiring- Anyone who’s been thrust into an aCO, Queen or even just a CIC position in general knows these roles drain your soul and actively disintegrates your faith in your fellow humans. I can’t really imagine anyone playing CO for any longer than 2 rounds in a row (Silverlocke excluded :patrice:).

Predators on the other hand are literally observer+ in most cases, and there’s just not the same kind of pressure present.

Add in a soft griefer CMP and you are debating “Screw it, I will just BE this guy and burn my WL”

Shouldn’t have a whitelist, won’t be fixed by keeping the whitelist.

Every single genuinely cool CO eventually ate a ban. You can’t play the role properly without getting banned, and you have to jump through stupid hoops just to have the opportunity to play it and get banned.

Now the CO’s are all unfun timid carbon copy play the meta types, and they still eat bans.

1st issue - CO’s keep getting banned (especially for really stupid reasons)
2nd issue - Gatekept behind a whitelist

Result: Nobody plays CO, nobody applies to play CO.

Just calling it like I see it. Playing CO gets you more punishment than its worth unless you’re basically a doormat.

I disagree. Look at Karl Walz, Jamer Parker, Steve Murphy, Brandon Aces, Booker. All interesting people. Almost forgot about Heinz “Wulfe” Mueller & Greg “Miracle of Sol” Lauffer. All not banned. I do agree that some of the bans are really stupid. The WL is there for a reason to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Not gonna lie. I rarely see differing COs. Especially the ones you listed. None of them have an distinguishing features and feel like vague copies of eachother.

I get Lauffer, but I haven’t seen him in months so I wouldn’t count him personally.

I think CO personalities come through a bit more- Synths and Preds have remarkably limited verbal interaction with humans, whereas COs basically have to keep talking. Not saying you’re wrong though- I absolutely agree that for most COs, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart if the sprite and names were anonymous.

I think that as much as we like to say roleplay is prized in CM, it’s not much of a factor unless you play a very exaggerated archetype. Most people’s expectation of RP would probably just be the bare minimum of acting like you’re in a military setting, rather than an actually well-defined character detached from your real personality since again, we’re LRP MRP.
For me, CO personalities mainly bleed through either from briefing style & thus how they structure announcements, and the player’s initiative when commanding the frontline.

The WL will never die.

i dont understand the issue people have of COs being “carbon copies”, not even mentioning that it’s such a broad statement that can be stretched in any way possible

if we’re talking about carbon copies - i can call (almost) anyone typing in this thread a carbon copy of each other and i’m not going to be wrong

there’s nothing wrong with not having a super cool unique character, the whitelist is not even about being unique or have a special quirk(see synths)

Why are you personally attacking me?

Well the reason why this is always brought up is because ive literally been told before that the only thing that separates a XO and CO is their “roleplay ability”. Yet almost every CO ive seen is basically the same; either they are meta slaves (like I am, to be fair, since going against the meta is suicide) or actively grief the marine team while disguising it as “roleplay” (Viktor Kleiner, Bill Carson [thank god his CO is gone and he only griefs on XO now]).

The only “unique” CO ive seen so far is Greg Lauffer and thats only because of his funny 30-40 min briefing cause he writes a huge script each time.

But I also think this is not the fault of the WL; this is because the culture of CM has changed. The 70-30 meta of knowing marines will lose 70 percent of the time out of 30 means that extreme strategies are no longer appreciated, and wacky characters are not seen as valid anymore like Windhealer, because it is MUCH easier to win as a marine now if you just play properly, so anything that goes against winning now is seen as a bad thing.

The WL used to focus on RP a lot more even when it was just a vote by the community to get a whitelist (instead of a Council, backstory, and a bunch of question as it is now) simply because CO’s KNEW they were going to lose most of the time so they didn’t mind doing stupid shit like Sulaco atmos engineering holds to the death, the infamous janitoral soap + water slip and slide hold of the dropship, UGL MK2 spam down a corridor for 2 + mins because MK2’s used to come with full UGL’s so you could vend 100 + full UGL MK2s, and so much more, and that was just ship defense.

Bill Carson was tolerated, despite his shitty antics, in that era because marines were going to lose anyway so might as well make it funny.

Well said. It is unfortunate.

how exactly being wacky or funny is being unique?

back then was just effortless shit throwing at the fan because people play cm like its league of legends and optimize the fun out of everything, and the only way for them to feel any joy like they used to is to do stupid shit

if you can’t have fun without doing stupid shit you should probably take a break or move on to a different game, it’s as simple as that

it’s a player issue, not a server or a whitelist issue

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of banned men.
This is the music of the people who will not apply again.
