Doctor Brutality - Staff Report: Behavior involving Misconduct - Segrain

What’s your BYOND key:

Doctor Brutality

Round ID:

22799

Your character name:

Edgar Pope

Their BYOND key:

Segrain

What are you reporting?:

Behavior involving Misconduct

Description of the incident:

First of all, to make clear what happened, I’ll explain what led to my conversation with Segrain. It may appear that I am reporting based on how I talk about the events relating to enforcement action taking, but that is not the case. As they are the admin presiding over the tickets this round I accept Segrain’s judgement of how events panned out in relation to punishments (or lack thereof) of other players.

The situation begins aboard the Alamo, during first launch. The door on the west side was left open during transit, as sometimes happens. A couple people, Jose Ramirez, a PFC & Cletus Scrungle, an MT, are standing right next to the open airlocks that lead into the void. The Dropship Pilot, Victoria Cinder, proceeds to first push Jose out of the Alamo, instantly killing them and leaving them permanently dead. Following this, they attempted to do the exact same with Cletus. At this point, I knew without a doubt that they were intentionally spacing other players so I did the only thing that I could do in this situation to stop them. I PB them once with my shotgun. This does not kill/crit them, so I move east away from the airlock to avoid my next PB spacing them (I am not looking to round remove people), then PB them again. I figured with the Major (Rodolfo Dumas) aboard and witness to the whole incident, they can preside over the situation in an IC manner and take action as they deem fit, while the spaced player, Jose, could ahelp and ask for a respawn if they wish.

Fastforward a couple minutes into the round and I get PM’d by segrain asking me what happened. I cannot remember exactly what I said here but essentially I respond with a brief summation of what I describe above, as well as telling them I recorded what happened and would be happy to share with them. So far everything seems very cordial. However, the next PMs I get swap to investigating my actions. I remain calm and try to keep things civil and explain my point of view to Segrain, they end up closing their final ahelp with “Either way, best leave such matters for staff to handle. I understand the instinct to stop an obvious bad actor, but you did not even ahelp it postfactum to explain what happened. I am struggling to believe that you really were motivated by trying to do what is right.”

It’s the last part of this that I find rather demeaning, because I’ve just spent the past 15-20 minutes as Squad Leader going back and forth with nothing but understanding and politeness when it comes to Segrain’s point of view on things, went out of my way to edit a clip midround to help them with their ticket, and again, I believe my actions reflect that I was not acting in bad faith, yet Segrain chooses to close the ticket with what is frankly just a rude remark, which confuses me even more considering that despite them feeling this way they didn’t leave a note or ban on my account (which also seems weird considering they referred to my actions earlier in the adminPM as “griefing” (I’d argue my actions are pretty clearly backed up by the first line of rule 10). I have already explained the reason I did not ahelp, as it was handled IC and if other people wanted OOC resolution they were free to ahelp. It’s just, I feel like with the way this ahelp was closed Segrain is treating me as if I am some type of griefer, which I am anything but, considering I’ve been playing on CM for years now and the only ban I believe I have ever received was a 3 hour one, 2 & a 1/2 years ago, for killing myself after round end. If this is how they treat someone who tries to be as helpful as possible when admin PMd, I’d hate to see how they treat other players with a worse history, even if they have not done anything wrong in their situation.

(I think this falls under Behaviour involving misconduct, but honestly I’m not sure and I might be wrong, I just find that the way that Segrain interacts with people lacks tact and can be demeaning to people who are trying to play the game in good faith, this is the reason behind this report)

Evidence:

Screenshots of adminhelps that I could find (missing the initial 3 which involve segrain DMing me, and me providing the video posted below). Apologies if they aren’t sized very well, I struggled to find out how to post them in the report template with copypaste/upload, and gave up: Man I hate making staff reports - Album on Imgur

The video showcasing the Alamo incident, I think this is relevant for context behind my actions but isn’t the crux of the issue: Watch pogriefing | Streamable

Howdy Doctor Brutality,

I totally get why you’d want to shoot the pilot, and while it’s admirable to want to help the people around you, honestly it just makes our job as staff members a bit more challenging.

There were two possible scenarios: either it was grief or it was an accident, but either way shooting the pilot only really served to complicate the investigation. I do understand you felt a bit accused by Segrain’s closing lines, especially when you were just trying to do the right thing and preserve peoples’ rounds, but I found Segrain’s dialogue with you to be overall pretty respectful.

Staff will not always be 100% correct about assessing someone’s intent, and it’s clear that Segrain was somewhat skeptical of your objective here. All that said, Segrain did not take any actions against you and, while they were not entirely convinced of your pure intentions, they remained polite and understanding. Although your staff report further cements your positive aims, and although I believe you were acting in good faith as a result of this additional testimony, there is no grounds for me to make corrections to the staff member in question. This staff report is denied.
