Simple: add a preference in character setup to what role you prefer when you sign up for the fox trot squad. Obviously this wouldn’t include specialist as it’s a seperate purchase, and probably wouldn’t include smartgunner, let it be a random person in the squad so it can be a fun random reward for people who also like playing engi/medic/SL.
If this works, you could roll it into an ERT squad equivalent.
This is already a thing, unless you’re wanting to see if the preferences to Foxtrot can just be separate from ERT preferences as a whole. In your Characters Setup/Edit Characters menu, the Special Roles tab has options where you can choose to allow or disallow yourself to roll ERT types like Leader, Medic, Engineer, and so on- and it applies for Foxtrot!

I think you just have to have another character in “character prefrences” selected then the one you died with when your a ghost.

No, IIRC first spawn is SL, medic, comm tech, 2 Rifleman. Then subsequent purchases get you 5 riflemen.
Then there’s a spec purchase that’s separate.
