Fun fact memes dont exist in CM apprantly.

So I was playing and I mentioned the word meme and an admin told me that they dont exist. Not referencing a specfic meme jsut the concept of memes. Rule 2 says that refrences to event or culture after 1975 should be avoided. But that is a very vauge statement that get a bit confusing when you think about it.

No one uses phones in CM but the cell phone was invented in 1973. Memes don’t exist but computers and wireless communication that allowed for there creation does. The term and invention of the internet goes back to the 60s. Many of these existed jsut had yet to make it int othe civilion market. We see some this in CM such as with personal computer, email, CO’s tablet, and fax machines able to communicate over light years.

There are many concepts and inventions that don’t exist in CM that pre date 1975. Also some devices in game already do this. The cl has a hand held beacon that can wirelessly transmit and recive meesages. In the req backroom there is a laptop a device that was invented in the 60s. The ship is full of personal computer with lore emails on them.

Since internet and tech culture went it’s own direction so let try and imagine what that was like. What kind of funny cat pictures would people send each other. What would gameing or chat-bourd culture be like. Is there a CM equivalent to club penguin that was invented in the 90s or 2000s.

If they wont let us have memes they we simply must invent our own lore accurte version of memes.

Interestingly enough the word “meme” was coined in 1976, though the concept of the word would have existed prior to that.

invented =/= widespread, cellphones were still kinda a luxury up until the 2000s.

the internet as we know it (with websites, etc) doesn’t exist, there is a communications network through space managed by weyland yutani but due to the distance of space it takes a pretty long time for messages to get around, networking is more along the lines of fax machines and telnet and not peer to peer computer connections.

Think about how satphones are like, ludicrously expensive except for emergencies, this is similar to a giant satphone network, so messages are going to be sent based on priority, and priority is more or less determined by who can fit the highest bill to get it sent, people aren’t gonna be using it to send pictures of cats around.

Okay then lets take that concept and think about how things might change. Let imagine what it might be like on earth were distances are shorter. Interplantly communication might be super expnsive but do you think local communication would cheep enough for widespread use.

If i am a fan of video game in CM how might I go finding cheat codes or guides. Do you think video games would exist at all. I mean computers exist for personal use in game. Like I said there are many on the ship includeing a laptop.

People used to fax dumb stuff as a joke. I would call that a meme.

funny thing is that MEMEs predate modern culture. “Kilroy was here” is a meme from WW2, Memes have been a thing since antiquity… Its just they had less of a impact as they lacked a means to rapidly spread.

EDIT: a good example is the funny margins in medieval manuscripts

this is kind of missrepsenting so many things at once its crazy,

First of all, while yes things that we would class as Memes today, were mostly seen as shared in-jokes at the time, Killroy was here, is one of those cases of in-jokes.
It’s referal to ‘meme’ status, has only really occured in recent decades.

Likewise, political cartoons, have existed doing similar things, I point towards satire maps, lady liberty, uncle sam, Britannia, these you can also class as memes

So your telling memes are not just a mass shared inside jokes shared over the internet.

See this why the dev’s should have based everything on the 80s and 90s like the movies did. We would have the internet, UPP k-pop.

On the up side I can imagine IDF wattburg and other communist themed pop bands becomeing much larger. Since the countrys they brew insperation from did not die and in fact became more powerfull. I wonder how music by the red army choir would change as well.

Question is cuba still communist by the time of CM. Castro only died recently IRL. With backing from the still intact soviet union I imagine it could continue to exist.

I believe your usage of the word ‘meme’ was more netspeak than restricted reference.

Well the admin jsut told me to re read rule 2. They did not exacly tell me what part of rule 2 I violated. Weidly enouhg I cant find anything in rule 2 outlawing netspeak jsut stuff about using non unicode words like (: or emojis. It said you can’t even write down stuff like xD even on paper or lables.

But thats not really why I started this thread.

If peasants can read they would revolt against the Dukes, Barons and even the King. Keep the Snails for the 1st and Second Estate.

Fun fact people in that time period could read. They even read books mostly about farming and they were very expensive.

Your thinking of the 10 and 20s were farmers were so isolated and overworked there kids could never go to school. Let along afford to get a book.

Yup a good deal of people knew how to read, you see reason why there is this misconception is that MOST common folk couldn’t read LATIN.

“Meme” is not netspeak nor references to modern things at all. It’s a word that is generally acceptable. The only real case I can think of is saying “Oh yeah this is such a meme” but even then…

This really depends on context but if it’s just for saying the word meme it’s like ???. You shouldn’t get noted on edge cases like this imo.

The first use of the word meme was in a book called “The Selfish Gene”, while being published in 1976, took 3 whole years to write aka existed through 1973-1976. God is one example of a meme in the book, a culturally transmitted entity.

Fun fact, the publishing date is January 1st 1976. Meaning it had been approved, printed and shipped already in canon.

I think memes exist in CM but I don’t think they’d be called memes. maybe a better HRP™ term is calling them comics

Why cant we call them memes? Did the world suddenly enter stasis in 1975 and nothing after that was created or invented?

You should study how people spoke in 1976 because cm is very hrp, usage of words based, true and bob cross should be perma bannable offence
