Garbled CIC announcements are soulful but terrible to play with

What title says. While its immersive its also tedious as someone on the ground listening or the guy in CIC making them. It has effectively turned me off from playing CIC roles knowing that if coms go down im just screaming into the void unless I play the ping pong game and even then im significantly handicaped from relaying information on time.

We should atleast make it so that people wearing radio backpacks can hear the announcements - preferably these people should be NCOs and might even encourage your SL and FTL to equip that and lead, instead of playing john ā€˜robusto’ marine ++.

It would also encourage marines to listen to the guy in charge if they are trying to listen in the first place.

I like the proposal. Seems like a good compromise.

I’ve ragged on CIC and the announcements before the encryption, but I also like this suggestion

This sounds like very balanced suggestion indeed

Garbled announcements are not soulful

ā€œGabled CIC is soulfulā€, yea right. What next? ā€œHey while we fucked up CIC comms, let’s fuck up the tac map alsoā€. I can’t wait to see how people react when someone actually make a pr to turn tacmap into a dark screen with only dots.

They are souvlful. you on the ground getting cut off from all coms chanels and now from CIC adds to the isolation, the dread, the experience. Fucking up the map would add to that no subtract. My issue is we have no way of dealing with that when it happens except go fix coms. We should have alternatives and other means of dealing with it when it happens. If you have any ideas go ahead.

I think what you proposed is a fair compromise.

I’m Aden McClymonds and I approve this message.

once we get 200-300+ players in the server when the steam release happens the comms will be up 24/7

so wait by then i guess

Good point!

As an idea i like it. Makes radiobackpacks more usefull and if somebody made it so i would get a radiobackpack every round just to avoid that shity giberish from apearing in my UI/Chat box.

Rant about scramble below. Feel free to ignore.

On the whole scramble is ā€œsoulā€œ stuff. Hard disagree. On cic side of things just not knowing when comms are down is some of the most infuriating feeling you can have. Oh you wanted to announce a queen flank. Guess what buddy, comms are down and your announcement that could have helped marines did absolutely nothing. Only thing you can do as CIC is ask yourself ā€œWhy do i even bother with this?ā€ Marines already don,t read announcements a lot now they pay even less attention because who the hell wants to spend time deciphering giberish when you could be shooting xenos instead. So teamwork takes a hit.
And yeah you could decipher for clearer announcements but if the last 3 announcements were giberish do you think the average marine will bother checking if the 4th one is a bit more clear ?
Fob siege has become even more of a free for all than before and thats saying something. Because of no announcements or them beeing scrambled to hell marines are left on their own and CIC can just go for a smoke or something. SO cant do shit shipside besides attempting to call some random marine that has a radiobackpack . Argument could be made that this is where SL/Ftl should shine and organize planetside FOB defense but a lot of times said SL/Ftl are dead or don,t even bother with any organizing or flank callouts so all you can do as average marine is shoot at xenos with no greater purpose or teamwork beyond that. Sending down SO at this point is probably a good idea but even then teamwork as a whole is limited.
As a rifleman there is no dread or feeling of isolation. Just ā€œOh comms down.ā€œ Announcements will show up. Sometimes you can understand them sometimes you can,t. At some point i become so annoyed at scrambled comms that the moment i see announcements going m***es i don,t even bother reading further and just continue doing my own thing.

TLDR: Scramble has done nothing besides lower the teamwork of marines and make playing CIC even more unfun. Maybe in future marines start coordinating better when comms are down but i doubt that. Don,t think i will ever enjoy this change or want to play CIC again.

Make it so its connected to leadership skill or something. Or just include the radio backpack in the starter kit of SLs and not just FTLs. I dont see a problem here.

Simple solution if devs still think Garbled announcement is good: make radio backpack bypass it. Most time only ā€œusefulā€ roles (medics, FTLs, SLs) wear it, which are the roles most targeted by announcements. For those ungas with stuffs on back, they don’t care what the announcement is about 90% of the times. And since radio can already bypass the comms issue I don’t see why it can’t bypass garbled lore-wise or gameplay-wise.

And before someone say it would be OP or something, it’s not widely available for every single marine to have. And with the logic we normally take: the more rare an item, the more OP it should be; it should be buffed.

An actual good idea on the forums…..it can’t be

Happens from time to time.

Yeah the radio backpacks thing makes sense.

And I mean, I don’t care whether or not it’s ā€˜soulful’ because people have different definitions of soulful, but, it didn’t really make sense just from a logic perspective when all normal comms are down but somehow announcements, squad messages, squad objectives are just fine.

Crazy idea. If you have an RTO pack on your back… call the CIC???

So if CiC wants to announce something, then people with RTO packs should call the CiC to get the announcement? Or CiC should call every radiopack user and alert them individually?

One of the issue with garbled announcement as I see it is the lack of feedback. I see a lot of experienced captains sending gibberish after gibberish, having no clue no one can understand them. And when I call them to inform, that they need to do the thing, I can really feel their frustration. You spent time typing the announcement, now you need to do the thing to unfuck it, now you need to resend the announcement which is probably just outdated at this point. So you wasted a lot of time, needed to be informed that your message was gibberish, maybe this is even fine from the balance (we want comms to matter lets say) and even narrative perspectives, but it simply siphons out the joy from already pretty unpopular role. Ultimately, given you can remove garble, it’s just really an annoying chore no one asked for. I feel like players should be rewarded for trying to communicate and lead, not punished so harshly.

I enjoy playing CiC, but this feature makes the idea of rolling commanding role much less appealing.

CIC sends an announcement. It’s garbled.

ā€œUh oh, I don’t know what Command meant to say. I better call them!ā€

Alternatively — Comms suddenly go out, CIC recognizes that their announcements are garbled.

ā€œUh oh, what I’m trying to announce might get lost in translation. I better call my SLs to make sure they know what to do!ā€

Not that complex.
