Pretty simple idea here, give marines access to eyewear that has a slot for helmet optics, for those poor helmetless souls out there. Now you might say that it’s a punishment for not wearing a helmet, but I’m of the opinion that you’re already punished enough for not wearing a helmet, what with the massive damage, no helmet camera, no storage slots, and the greatly increased decap risk. And as a final note just make them conflict with helmet optics, no doubling up on HUDs.
Every CHAD (Constantly Helmetless And Dying) player can tell you how turboubersuperdupercringe it is to play without a helmet, that optics for helmet-less Marines isn’t a terrible idea.
This isn’t 1:1 what I was talking about, this only covers medical optics, what I’m proposing is eyewear that can hold any helmet optic. be it the welding visor (just wear goggles at that point), NV optics, or medHUD. By default it’s just an empty piece of eyewear that doesn’t do anything but have a slot for an optic.
Counterpoint: In much of the Aliens media we see marines opting to not wear a helmet, be that in the movie or any of the various games. As I said already, you’re already heavily punished for not wearing a helm, I don’t think letting marines use optics without a helmet is going to horribly break the game balance.
Pause there a second:
In the movie, there were only 6 people who did not deploy with a helment.
Of them:
2ND LT GORMAN: Officer, backline, wasn’t going to see combat if everything went to plan.
Ripley: Civilian, again, never should have seen combat.
Burke: Civilian, again, absolutly never should have seen combat.
Bishop: Artifical Person, driving the APC with the LT and the civilians
That leaves only Drake and Vasquez as people who would be reasonably expected to wear a helmet that weren’t, of the entire half-platoon of Marines. Given they are both smartgunners, it could be argued helmets aren’t part of the smartgunnner kit for… some absurd reason [probably for the benefit of enemy snipers] [EDIT: As has been pointed out below, the head-mounted sight may be too large to allow the use of a helmet, so it isn’t for the benefit of enemy snipers (not that they’re complaining)].
Everyone else loses their helmets over the course of the movie, of course, but that’s not exactly their choice.
I cannot speak to official licensed games since I’ve played approximately zero of them, but I would expect similar patterns of widespread use of combat helmets for people expected to get into combat.
