Whenever comms goes down marines are forced to use telephone packs, personally i think that these telephones are too OP as it means that marines have constant comms but it is also too wweak as it relies solely on the FTL remembering to bring a telephone pack, my solution to this is the addition of carrier pigeons so that marines have to carry around pen and paper with them at all times, after making their note they will then give it to the pigeon which will arrive at the chosen destination in approximately 30 minutes to an hour, however the xenos can also target the pigeons to prevent shipside marines receiving messages.

YES
RTO, not FTL. And in order to add some realism, lets make the pigeons choke to death after reaching space. Gameplay-wise this would mean that the pigeons never reach the almayer and are instead permanently lost after being sent.
