the past week and change I’ve been unable to reliably connect to the closest relay to where I live (vent hill virginia). Sometimes it’s up, sometimes it is down but comes back after a delay, sometimes it just doesn’t become available at all. The next best relay is almost always available, but super laggy to play on.
US East coast player here, used to get a consistent 20-40 ping. For a…few days now?….my ping would show up with 60-250 ping, and sometimes the relay system says London is the best relay. The ping isn’t accurate either as my key press to character movement is .75 sec under ‘160’ ping (which should be .16 sec).
I play asia with avg 150-200 ms, it is fine thanks to BYOND servers brute forcing stuff instead of being entirely client side (which is the source of rubber banding), but over the past 2 weeks, the server/everyone in-game randomly starts freezing in place (sometimes can talk) or out right forced to re-connect.
Live near you, probably. Closest relay is the Virginia one. I can connect fine but the last week my ping went from basically nothing to over 200 without using the relay.
Feels like something changed for sure.
Yes it’s been horrendous, 100 ping average bouncing up to 200 to 300, with occasional (or so it says) 25ms for like, 2 seconds.
nothing changed in our server architecture over the timeframes stated. you can either connect directly or via a relay, the fastest is determined here:
please note connecting to the server via port 14000 instead of 1400 is different
you do not need to use a relay, and using one will often make your connection worse, not better
Oh this is very interesting. When I connect via Byond’s UI typical Join button, I get 150 ping. When I use byond://direct.cm-ss13.com:1400 I get 22 ping. Currently 150 ping on your ping link is byond://uk.cm-ss13.com:14000
And now the ping is fluxuating between 60 and 150 on Join button. US servers showing 40 ping. Playing ingame direct is 20-50 ping. All I can say is it seems the Join button does not use the direct link.
Thank you for the information Harry!
no, it doesn’t use the direct link. that is intended
