Reason for Ban:

Warning | Rule 2 | Player as Alpha Squad Leader disregarded orders of the Captain to hold the surface and went down the elevator with two max cap grenades to try and get a foothold. Player was followed by two other marines when he asked to not be followed. Player intended to get a “foothold” and failed to do so as they went down alone. SAY: Unknown (as Corbin Pennington) [Command]: XO, we ain’t waiting. by ltnts (SeniorMod) on 2023-12-09 17:11:15 (ID: 19879)

Banned from Squad Leader - Rule 8 | Player as the Squad Leader abandoned their squad and went down alone to get a foothold while disregarding the orders of the XO. See above for reference. by ltnts (SeniorMod) on 2023-12-09 17:12:57 (ID: 19879)

Your appeal:

I would like to appeal this job ban, and hopefully get further clarification for all parties, moderators included. I as squad leader of Alpha on Ice Colony was leading my men well, setting separate fire teams and holding key points. We were stalemated topside, with no xenos essentially at all on the surface. Several marines made a trip down the elevator SW of the LZ, and came back unscathed. I recommended, and the XO announced to get a foothold down the elevator underground but shortly, not sure how long announced that we should not go down as he thought it was too risky. I took the initiative to clear a path with some grenades, and my men were planning on following (the XO had just announced to tell us go down, and I believe some time later said no? make up his mind). I do think that the spirit of the rule regarding SLs, FTLs, and Specs following orders is about ensuring that a spec is not way off task and preventing the proper utilization of their heavy firepower from what the command has at their disposal. However, I do not think that working as a squad leader to clear a path when orders are unclear rises to the level of a job ban from Squad Leader and I was not banned for a violation of Rule 2. I was banned for a violation of Rule 8, and do not believe that the charge and clearing the path rose to a violation of this rule to warrant a job ban on the grounds of not using my slot. Squad Leaders would never except another marine to do something risky in their place, and I took this initiative to continue the round, not to eliminate my slot. However, after I ghosted the XO was doing everything in his power to make my push mean nothing, again appeared to be ahelping anyone heading down, and eventually several marines came down got me and back up the elevator.

I would also like to make a note, that it appeared the individual playing XO was reporting multiple individuals to admins for any slight disobeying of his orders, and hope that the spirit of the rule will not continue to be abused as we all know and intend for Marines not to be bound by a hivemind like the Xenos.

I will continue to obey the rules as they are explained to me, and hope that further clarification regarding this can be had in this forum. Are squad leaders allowed to lead the squad as NCOs, or must they follow the letter of the orders, rather than as in all military history NCOs accomplish objectives by not always accomplishing the goal by following the way it was told to be done. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello LinkAnakin,

I actually had a pretty difficult time reaching a verdict on this appeal. After going through the logs it is clear that you did disobey direct orders from your leadership to not go underground. Given the time between the orders being changed and the frequency at which the orders were given, you most certainly had the clear opportunity to understand the orders which were given to you, as LINTS has surmised; however that is not the argument of your appeal.

“Rule 2: Roleplay” states, among other things, “a Squad Leader would not ignore the orders of command just to do their own thing.” This aspect of the rule you certainly disobeyed, however you’re appeal to the ‘spirit’ of the rules is compelling. Your decision to disobey a direct order from the executive officer was done on understandable roleplay grounds. However, the rule is not only there to prevent flagrant low-roleplay disregard for command, but also to ensure that command has a role in the game; if squad leaders do not follow the general orders of their command staff and, conversely, directly undermine them, then the officers have no place in the game loop.

Verdict
Ultimately, I have found wrongdoing, but not wrongdoings of the capacity or type mentioned in the ban. You were not breaching “Rule 8: Use Your Slot,” but were in breach of the roleplay rules outlined for squad leaders. This appeal is approved and your squad leader ban will be lifted, however your warning for breaching rule 2 will remain.
