Why do you wish to become a Fax Responder?
A few-
I play a lot of roleplay roles, and I find that having a fax responder who can listen into the round’s events really contributes to the whole atmosphere. This primarily comes from my playtime as a Corporate Liasion, as I find that having somebody listening in really improves the roleplay and fun of the round - I also notice that many new players to the CL role are discouraged from using the fax as most rounds there will be nobody listening in, and as such refuse to use one of the most rp-enhancing tools available to them.
I also quite enjoy writing faxes, and I’d love to be on the other side of the machine.
With my hours in all roles growing, I’d also like to contribute back to the RP atmosphere as well.
In short, I love the fax machine and hope I can help others have fun with it too.
What do you consider the purpose of this role?
I see a fax responder as both a middleman for the moderators and game staff, and as a maintainer of the world’s roleplay environment through responding.
Having a fax responder really makes the world feel lived in, and the feeling that there are other interests listening in onto the USS Almayer’s activities. While not directly interfering with round flow, the illusion of there being others out there I find greatly contributes to immersion especially for the “blank slate” roles like CC and CL, and fax responders can handle a variety of tasks as HiComm or Provost as well.
While responding and maintaining the roleplay environment is your primary duty, the staff team are not always available to respond to faxes and as such you are also a middleman for them and the server.
When would you consider it appropriate to use your phone?
Rarely ever. Your fax machine can handle most communication already, and it is immersion breaking for somebody on a far-away station or outpost being able to directly phone you.
I would only phone if the situation demands it, such as during an emergency or hijack, where I need to get an urgent communique through and the fax machine is unavailable/unviable due to time constraints.
If playing WY Responder, what objectives do you consider within your power to give the CL?
As the CL role is a “make your own fun” vibe, I’ll tend to go with how my Liasion wishes to pace themselves. Complaining about command or found something interesting planet-side, like some weird cloaked aliens? I’ll build off of that. Wishing for some straightforward objectives? I’ll build off of that. For more experienced CLs, I’ll give them loose objectives for freedom, and for newer executives, I’ll give them straightforward so they can get more comfortable with the role’s expectations and roleplay.
Examples of looser objectives;
- Increase our company’s reputation with the marines through incentives.
- Persuade command to have our interests in mind and avoid levelling the entire colony if possible.
- Check in with research periodically to see what they’re cooking in there, and later on, about their XX-121 projects and collected biomatter.
More specific and some fun ones;
- Perform a non-disruptive economic valuation of the Kitchen and Mess Hall to inquire about establishing a restaurant franchise there.
- The basic ones, such as NDAing survivors and recovering the CIR-60 blackbox.
- Take photos of a colony building or the landing site for a damage assessment.
- Interview a department on their favorite corporate brands.
- Inquire with command about the possibility to get a signed WY-439 for a certain colony building.
If playing Press Responder, what objectives do you consider within your power to give the CC?
I lack the hours for CC, however I find that a lot of CCs forget they have a fax, and most tend to deploy immediately to the colony. Like for CL, I’ll typically follow wherever they want to take me. Saw something cool for a press release? I’ll build off of it. As such, I’ll give them as much freedom as possible, and see if they wish to be groundside or shipside. As such, some objectives I’ll give them based on their location is;
Groundside:
- Get a photo album of XX-121 lifeforms and/or unknown aliens if the knowledge becomes available of their existence through faxes.
- Interview marines on their experiences and their opinions on the battle, the USCM’s funding situation, on the Company.
- Collect gossip via your tape recorder.
- A military magazine is running a contest, take photos of the coolest weapons and vehicles you see groundside.
Shipside:
- Interview the Corporate Liasion about the incident and/or a scandal.
- Interview a member of command staff or the SEA.
- Do a “day in the life” tour of a department, such as Requisitions or Engineering, and follow them around with their consent.
