Why do you want to become a Mentor?:

My reason for wanting to become a mentor is twofold, the first of which is because, since I started playing the game years ago, I’ve always had good experiences with mentors. I’ve gained huge respect for the mentors and the mentor system, which isn’t always on every server, for helping me learn so much about the game as well as maintaining an amazing professional attitude. In light of this, I wanted to become a mentor to hopefully be able to share my knowledge, as others did with me, and to contribute and be a part of this group.

Secondly, I truly enjoy teaching people about CM-SS13. Something which has always stricken me about Space Station 13 is the sheer amount of depth it has, so to be able to share that with people is really cool. It’s fun to be able to answer questions and be helpful to people, from new players, people trying out a new role or experienced players asking for help for something outside of their niche. Hopefully, being a mentor will enable me to not only answer mentorhelps, but also to play as an SEA and help people from the very start of logging into the server and watch them grow into an experienced player.

What gameplay areas do you know and which areas are you strong and weak in?:

I would say that I have a fundamental knowledge of every area of gameplay, ranging from the simple things from basic support roles such engineering and medical, to complicated and niche topics like surgery and research, including more nuanced subjects like Command Strategy, Tactics and loadouts, though were I a mentor I would always try to be as neutral as possible when faced with such divisive topics. That is not to say that for all areas I only have a fundamental knowledge, as I do have an extensive knowledge of a lot of areas mentioned, especially more complicated engineering.

As for weaknesses, I find roles such as OT a bit too formulaic and unenjoyable, as such my knowledge of OT particularly is limited to a more theoretical basis though I do have the basic knowledge like casings and chemistry. This also extends to some xeno castes, for which I definitely have my preference, though I have sampled all of them and am quite familiar with all of their abilities.

How often are to able to play CM?:

At least 5 rounds a week, though often much more.

Anything else you’d like to add?:

I do also have other qualifications for being a mentor, one of which being that I am a contributor to the CM codebase and have a good grasp of how to interact with it. As such, not only am I capable of looking through the codebase to answer tough questions, but I also like to keep up with recent changes to the game and would be able to answer a question about recent changes to the game.

Furthermore, at times I have contributed to the CM wiki and have dedicated time to improving this as a learning resource for new players. This gave me a better appreciation for a lot of topics outside of gameplay, including a LOT of cooking recipes and xeno statistics.

Finally, as an avid forums user, I am familiar with which guides are the most up-to-date and have also learned a lot of tips and tricks from these sources.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like!

Hello, Willzadl

After some discussions with the mentor team, it was brought to our attention that you appear to have a tendency to be verbally abrasive when things do not go your way. While we appreciate your wide range of skills and your commitment to help new players, we firmly believe that mentors are generally expected to maintain certain behavioral standards when interacting with players, whether they are new or veteran. Unfortunately for this reason, I will be giving a -1 for your application.

However, if you are intent on joining the mentor team, I highly recommend that you reconsider your interactions in the future and work on building a positive rapport with the community.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. While in the past, I would absolutely agree with you that I would yell at people when things didn’t go my way, I’ve made a lot of changes since then. For one, I stopped playing survivor, which for me was a very stressful role that was the root of a lot of abrasive interactions. Following that, I also took a break from the game for a few weeks to let it set in, and since then I’ve been playing mostly support roles, RPing to a higher standard and generally enjoying the game for what it is more. I hope that, instead of looking back, we can look to the present and the future to see whether I’m still verbally abrasive.

I won’t contest your -1, but I hope that in the coming weeks I can sway you against it.

I’m glad to hear that you are actively making changes in your behaviour. It’s important to keep in mind that many of our discussions are often based on what we last remember or heard from the applicant’s past behaviour. That is not to say that you will forever be seen under the same light of your past actions for the rest of your time in CM. I have the fullest confidence that people, including mentors, will take notice if you make dedicated efforts to maintain that you have truly changed. Keep putting in the effort, and I wish you the best of luck for your current or future applications.

For my ingame medical timetrials I set up:

chem trial:
Karl Anderssen - 0:53.37

surg trial:
Karl Anderssen - 1:23.45

Scoring in the top ranks of both trials takes both knowledge of the medical field and skill/muscle memory in execution. It is proof that yes, you know what you doing and can show it. Mostly making this reply as proof of at least some of your skills.

I cannot say much about your interactions with others, as I have not personally interacted with your characters a lot in the past. I know you had a troubled past and while I personally believe people change at a glacially slow rate, the simple fact that you want to be a mentor enough to make an application means you have changed from your distant past. Keep at the change you want to be and I am sure others will notice.

Seconding what huskymaru said, I have seen you be rather toxic to people over minor disagreements or even misunderstandings. -1

I haven’t observed the kind of behaviour that others are alluding to, but I also haven’t been paying attention very long! What I can say is that I have observed Willzadl’s conversational style to be fairly straight to the point and frank. To many this may come off as abrasive, but I’ve certainly never interpreted it that way and know many people with a similar manner of speaking in real life.

They are also someone I would say is content to disagree on things and have conversations rooted in disagreement; this is normal and healthy, although some perceive mere disagreement and debate as rude at times.

I do think these are things that can easily be softened when/if serving as mentor.

I often have seen Willzadl answering questions (including my own), and giving advice in the discord whether it be about mechanics, whitelist applications, byond, etcetera, and I have appreciated that. They clearly know the game well mechanically and are comfortable in a variety of roles.

While it does not mean much, it’s a +1 from me, I say give them a chance.

Willzadl use to have some of the most hrp interactions with me back last year, about my character, new features (scandanavian accent users wya). I can’t speak to the concerns about behavior when things didn’t go their way; I didn’t experience them in that capacity and others here can offer that perspective; but I did want to say that you always added to my rounds and my interactions with halfdan remain some of my favorite memories on this server. We have many things we are good at and many things we can grow at, all I ask is you don’t get discouraged by any things to grow at and remember that there are many good things you can offer that can be the foundation for that growth. I will always look forward to seeing you in a round, regardless of what happens here.

Where is fulldan???

Edit: oh duh +1

So I’ve let this sit a bit longer than it should especially with concerns to your behavior and ultimately I’m going to be denying it. Reviewing even your note history just for this year you’ve managed to rack up a few, my mentioning of it being this year doesn’t mean I’m barring you or not going to properly consider you for the rest of the year but I’d like you to wait at least a few months before reapplying so I can gauge if sentiment has changed at all or you continue to eat anymore notes/bans.
