Nerf M56D to increase immersion.

There used to be a lot of fun things that marines could do that got nerfed, then I just accepted that’s always going to happen, so I decided to make up my own nerfs. This one’s for the M56D.

Nerfs

• Team effort.
The gun initially has nerfed accuracy. Fire 30 rounds to get an accuracy buff which gives it normal accuracy. Letting go of the gun will remove the buff. A teammate can reload your gun so you don’t let go of your gun; saving your buff. A leader can give you orders to buff your accuracy higher but it does not stack with the 30 round buff.

• Extra reloading steps. (can be skipped with pamphlet, or if you already have this skill)

  1. Open the cover. (Can be hotkeyed while mounted, or click gun on Help intent while dismounted.)
  2. Remove old drum.
  3. Unchamber the old round. (Can be hotkeyed)
  4. Hold new drum in one hand.
  5. Click the drum with other hand to pull out ammo belt.
  6. Click the gun with the belt. It is removed from your hands. The drum is now linked to the gun.
  7. Close the cover.
  8. Click the gun with the drum to attach it.
  9. Chamber the round.

• Heat management.
The gun turns red hot after hundreds of consecutive rounds. You can wait for it to cool down or:

  1. Click gun on Grab intent to remove barrel, then drop it. (Need gloves so you don’t burn yourself.)
  2. Pick up a spare barrel that has cooled off.
  3. Click the gun with the barrel to attach it.

You can get more barrels from req or squad vendor. You can not store red hot barrels.

• Jammed gun.
Attempting to fire after swapping drums without clearing the chamber may jam the gun. You may unchamber the round to unjam it. If that doesn’t work, you may open the cover to unjam it.

• Misfire.
An improperly chambered round may fire the old round without IFF. An overheated barrel may cook the rounds which fires the gun on its own without IFF until its out of ammo or breaks. Repair with welder.

Buffs

The gunner gets their own icon, just like the mortar. It is shaped like a gun on a tripod.

I will write a follow up post for the M2C when I come up with an idea.

Now that I’ve gone over all the nerfs, let’s discuss how to balance them with buffs or make the nerfs more lenient so marines wont be discouraged to use this gun.

I like this idea to nerf gun jugglers, but M56D can already be pretty hard to utilize on an actively moving front. If it didn’t have reliable IFF I’m not sure how many other people would take it, but I would take it less than I already do as Comtech, and I usually only do when its high-pop so I can assist the blob and not AFK while a we die to everything else.

You understand this is a joke right? I imagine its in response the all the stupid PRs nerfing everything from medicine and unga to a hyper tuned despoiler that one shots entire cadeslines. Marines do not need nerfs right now and we don’t need over complicated mechanics that fix a problem that doesn’t exist.

There are many stupid posts and PRs but I thought something in there was interesting and yapped a lil, its okay. Who knows what anyone else walks away with.

tbh im curious if this will inspire nerf-happy devs to make similar changes, regardless if we think we never needed one

honestly I kinda like this idea, maybe to balance out the nerf you could give it a mini scope or a deployable shield built into it

a nerf is a last thing that this gun ever needs

more AP and damage in general, especially structural damage

m56d is quite good it’s just a huge pain in the ass to interact with. An overhaul to make it more intuitive to deploy/move/etc would probably quickly make it a top pick for people interested in chill hold m1 gameplay

Then bullets go through xenos and hit more xenos behind them.

I’d be interested to see if converting it in to the scoped version would increase how often it’s used.
