Nerfs queen screech and re-adds bombard to ovi state #7188

Personal opinion: I think this’ll make queen extremely powerful, marine malding is gonna be crazy.

However, it’ll come at the cost of xenos being MORE RELIANT on 1-2 runners on the backline for all of their captures, because currently xenos are extremely reliant on queen screech for caps that there’s only ever 1-2 caps in hive unless a runner is specifically backlining to cap marines. Carriers/Egg Carriers will be useful at least.

this is actually a substantial nerf to base carrier, because base carrier is only good at the first half of the game when they make traps, after the marines have pushed to the extent that all future pushing is nade and bullet spam, traps are redundant. Then you slap huggers on people in the queen screech with each wave. Hense why a lot of carriers go eggsac after the early game, because it’s not bound by resupply or by the hugger slapping mechanics, and are easier for warriors at the front to fling people into

However this could lead to carrier buffs which could be cool, since carriers were balanced around screech.

idk, willing to see it on test merge at least personally

I’m interested to see changes going away from screeches, they aren’t really that interesting but are vital for some games for xenos to get the advantage. Maybe screeches could apply a buff similar to what king gets to still force them off ovi. I don’t really know.

I at least wanna see what it’s like with testing.

I don’t personaly like it, since it will force queen players into an ovi “mostly” playstyle. And if the bombard ability has low enough cooldown, and does essentially what a boiler already does, then it will both be a choke holder and a cade melter at the same time.

That will likely be the case, and marines will mald until the ovi buff gets nerfed into the ground to the point that this just becomes a whole nerf overall

I am surprised with myself that I am open to see how this plays if tested but I have some concerns. First is that queen mobility has been nerfed to the ground to balance the screech so far, nerfing scree should make the queen much more mobile (in the movies the queen is freaking fast as well). Also to address the questions on how will xenos be able to survive ungaballs now, it would be nice to give queen some strong area damage, like something similar to king or a buffed line attack like rav (or multiple lines? a line that ends with a spike ball? the possibilities are endless). That should address that being stunned and mauled with being mechanically unable to react is not fun but queen would still be able to affect the marine murderball while they can move/run/shoot in the meantime. That would also give queen a different feel, the maximum range of xeno AoE abilities is usually 3 tiles, except for glob and oppressor hook I think, making queen been able to do damage in some form to a large crowd instead of stun could be an interesting experiment.

easy hard no.
Queen screech is easy to counter
Simply
Dont be in range
Throw a smoke!
Shake people you can!
Be in a large enough ball to counter push the screech immediately.

Screech has a large cooldown for a reason.

nah I play xeno and I can already forsee queen expand weeds near medics and then bombard them while they’re defibbing, it’s going to be absurd. The fact that the bombard can be ANYWHERE THE QUEEN CAN SEE is going to make it so strong.

Although the sentinel rework reduced sentinel into a horrible state.

I was quite convinced by the merit of the idea when it was laid out how overwhelmingly the entire game is centred around the actions of this one Queen player, not only that but how every balance decision regarding the xenos has to take the Queen into account due to how powerful they are.

There is no real Marine analogue for the Queen, as there is no single Marine player that is so vitally important to the faction that they literally decide the outcome of matches. The closest you have are Specs and the Commander, but they simply are not nearly as powerful as the Queen.

Its also worth mentioning we have the bias of being used to this system for the better part of over a decade. Furthermore the idea of you being stunned and helpless is a horrible mechanic and a horrible feeling, a necessary evil perhaps but maybe this PR addresses it?

I’d be interested in seeing how the change goes.

Someone mentioned the bombard and screech changes being separated into two seperate PRs, and after thinking a bit I think I actually agree,

Thinking hard, the ovi bombard is actually ridiculously strong. One boiler can already hold an entire choke with a 20s cool-down between shots, not counting movement, positioning. 30s infinite shots ANYWHERE within LoS of queen eye is quite literally fucked. The more I think about, the more I dislike the bombard.

I still believe the screech change itself is good- BUT, to compensate, I think that instead of buffing ovi, combat queen should be buffed to be faster and thus more survivable. E.g. dragging marines has much less slowdown, or something else.

Someone also mentioned that instead, screeching could have decreasing effects with less marines- Similar to berserker empower, a screech on a small group of marines will be less effective than a screech on an unga horde. I think this idea also has promise.

cool more xeno nerfs in a meta where xenos already struggle to end the game

What if instead of this we make a war empress strain with the ability to charge and use bombard on ovi but they lose the screech.

ngl i do miss queen charge, it was soulful, queen momentum mechanics were fun

I guess we are entering a time period of forever ovi queens, time to play last enjoyable queen rounds in case this gets merged. Anyway, some issues i see with this:
Basically this buffs stims, all you need to counter queen is speed stims (correct me if im wrong but i think those are much easier to get than antistun)
Capturing marines without queen on high pop is almost impossible/hard, depends if narines instantly shoot stunned dudes.

Only used to run away from marines, so this on top of screech made her annoying to fight even if she was alone.

I too miss cheezy mechanics that make rounds boring and longer.

Give queen like any other mobility-based ability so she doesn’t have to sit on her ass for 2 hours and we dont all become SO queen where we read like half a novel during a round because we’re just sitting in the hive for all of it

Or do, this could be the campaign to improve CM literacy rates

Considering the average IQ and reading comprehension of the playerbase it should have been opened in acid goop.

Already the case since you can just walk away. Nonsensical way of looking at things anyway since by this logic it’s also nerfing stims as stun stim is less relevant. just lmao

Should probably think about what’s enjoyable about current queen gameplay in the first place then, since this only addresses how broken the ability is. Core ohsofun gameplay of pressing space bar doesn’t really change with this pr.
The equivalent of complaining about fatty removal ruining the pilot role

I assume you felt i was attacking you, thats why you instantly jumped into insulting my inteligence after i stated my opinion.

Nowhere have i wrote that i enjoy clicking spacebar so not sure where you got that from, my point is that it very likely will make combat queen unfun and i find sitting on ovi whole round quite boring.

And now i will drop a shocking truth for whole CM community:
Different people enjoy different things.

I didn’t insult you, the comment was blanket about the community/thread. Reading comprehension, as I said.
I only quoted you because it was a good example of the acid goop tier posts itt.

Then don’t sit on ovi? Nothing about the queen gameplay’s changed.

True, bring back fatty since I enjoy winning through one button.
The only thing this changes about queen is that screech is no longer broken, if it was the overpowered aspect of queen that you enjoyed then I don’t think you enjoyed the role and its gameplay at all - only the overtuned power it had. Hopefully that’s unpacked enough to clear up what I meant in the last post.

Nothing about the ovi gameplay changed except for now you have to have your eye sit in one place and press an extra button on repeat.

“Screech no longer broken”, sorry to break it to you, but if you break a working ability it gets broken. If this change gets merged we would see experienced marines who have literally years of experience fighting screech queens, have a very easy time steamrollilng them.
