Tbh I spent way too long thinking about this topic.
People hating eachother because of metagang drama is kind of funny to think about.
stand by ur team bros… the game will become more fun if u seek opponents because of minor inconveniences surely…
And i think both sides are at fault in some ways here. Both command and echo squad act cliquey at times, so its hard to imagine either “side” being a greater evil.
I do personally think it harms the community tho with cliqueyness like this. But it has become so engrained in the cm community that it’s hard to imagine what it would be without it.

I’ve always imagined echo squad being formed to solely deal with backlining xenos and protection of IO’s. The normal squads alpha/charlie/delta are not cohesive enough to move back from a frontline and deal with backliners and echo would fit perfectly for it. When xenos start racking up kills in the backline, the XO/CO would have to call for everyone to back up or allow a slow envelopment to occur with the frontline very likely to wipe. Echo can help prevent this in the first place.
But if echo squad is used for memes or to abuse certain things then I can see why there is a need fore removing them.

Sometimes they don’t do you the courtesy of cryoing. Instead they’ll just run off and do the thing they wanted to do as echo anyway and all die.
Had that happen to me after denying echo multiple times with entirely different groups of players. Zero idea where these egos come from.

So, to summarize: this thread exists because someone got mad that people are doing what they want. In a videogame… A 20 year old videogame about making 64x64 pixel sprites horizontal… What the actual fu…
It’s a game, I can do whatever I want as long as it’s not directly harmful for my team (e.g. shooting someone at briefing), if the thing I’m doing is fun for me. I understand that some people play purely to win, and that victory means everything to them, but there are also players who came to do something cool/goofy, instead of murderballing with MK2s
Some players already go out of their way to deny said fun, like MPs arresting people for deploying without armor, or COs BEing others for lighthearted jokes, there’s no need to amplify it

If you want to double down on meta, though, here’s my advice: ban everything that’s not “good”, including:
- Echo squad (all members of it must be murderballing, that’s the only way to victory)
- Dual-wielding (it’s fun, but it’s not getting kills, so every marine holding sidearm in each hand must suffer from immediate heart attack)
- XM88 (all XM88 kits will hold an objectively better M4RA instead)
- Every medic with med rig instead of lifesaver must get a jban on medical (clearly he doesn’t play the optimal loadout, dragging us all towards xeno major)
- Every marine deploying without MK2, MK1 or M37 must be arrested for NOD (their guns were shitty anyway, so it won’t affect our murderball)
- RTOs must laze at least once every 1 minute (it’s their job, okay, BE them if they don’t)
- Make the “print laser cannon” button on a DS parts fabricator issue an immediate jban on anyone who presses it
- Every hivelord picking Resin Whisperer will be gibbed on the spot
- Young XX runners must be immobilized until they devolve and pick another caste with less skill requirements
- And many, many more

If you get a bunch of dudes that want to help, echo is a good time. Last time I was echo we were on LV, kept comms and backline secure and most lived to the end to take a victory picture together while watching the sunrise. In my experience Echo is a good thing when there’s good people in it.

This thread exists because I hated the concept of Echo since it was made. Idc about the PRs, it just reminded me of my bad experiences with players who meta it.
Echo was made so we could do specific objectives that needed to be done on the map… which is what you can do with a regular squad anyway. Echo directly lead to even more murderball.
Don’t need to put a squad on a flank cause you just send Echo. Don’t need to make a fireteam of Bravo to defend comms, send Echo. Echo exists because we weren’t using squads as independent, cohesive entities.

What tactic would you do with Echo that wouldn’t be better served by a regular squad? Give an example.

Everything apart from frontline duty.
Transporting supplies, building FOB, building outposts, clearing out back line, securing flanks, acting as an ambulance squad if you got a van.

Most times I’ve used it are for specific plans, ie. drawing xenos in for a split drop flank, or paradrop, or whatever.
I also have an utter LARP HQ section Echo with command tent and all that I want to do
