I realize this is a change done months ago, but I did not exist months ago. I was still a mere thought in the Lord’s head before He decided to bless (read “curse”) me with life and sapience. In any case, I personally really liked the RTO name and am still sad to see it go, but I’ve recently noticed that I may be alone in this sentiment, so I thought I’d just make this post and ask you all what you think about the change.
Fireteam Leader is a shit role because who tf actually makes fireteams, and who assigns the FTL to the FTL role instead of an SG or Spec??? Moreover WHO TF PAYS ATTENTION TO THE SHITTY FIRE TEAM!!! Holt crap Lois just rename them back to RTO (Radio Telephone Operator) why? Well because they have a radio, they have a telephone, and if you play command you already fucking know they operate it by calling you 20 times so they can fucking say “Erm CO queen has screeched” or “Runner in the back lines sir” no shit there’s a runner in the back lines. How about you take your shitty laser designator and LAZE THEIR BACKLINES SO I CAN HIT THE HIVE WITH MY CLUSTER OB???
Er, that’s a little much man. Though I do get what you mean when you say that the FTL has little use, FTs still get used, even if rarely. As a proud and loud FOBtard, I can say that Bravo often makes use of FTs in order to delegate QRFs, Comms teams, people to send to the front, etc. FTs can also help with delegating flanks to certain people.
Seriously, renaming them to FTL just made it sound like using a telephone and carrying cas equipment is optional, before we had a lot of issues with like a third to half of RTOs not carrying any jtac gear, but now you will be lucky to find even just one or two people with radios and even then these guys are likely going to have played the role previously.
Renaming RTO to FTL just made it a bit of PFC+ with acsess to a goofy looking helmet and funny keys. There’s like about 3 maybe four FTLs who I can count on to actually bring a radio, half of the time the SL or Corpman has to do it now.
Agreed, and it’s not even entirely the players’ fault. If you just read the role name, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the role is pretty much a junior SL.
TRUE
Someone should finally do the fireteam rework
I’m largely in favor of RTOs in the same way that I’m a fan of dedicated Corpsmen and Commtechs instead of “Squad Support” who could be built as medics or engies.
I think that the squad telephone is an invaluable tool for communication with command, and so are tactical binoculars for working with artillery and air support. When there can be so much information flying around and such limited ammunition for support: knowing who you can trust and reinforcing that role is critical. At present, any jackass in the whole corp can grab some tac-binoculars and may not even need a JTAC key if they shout “MY LAZ HIT MY LAZ LAZ DOWN NOW HIT MY LAZ QUEEN HIT IT OFFSET -50X AND 93Y DO IT NOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU MISSED AND KILLED ALL OF ALPHA!?” loud enough.
Similarly . . . Squad Leaders are intended for leading squads and keeping a line with command open. People who want to lead marines will likely just play SL, or SO if they wanted to command them, meaning that FTLs only lead marines if they are given a fireteam and marines who wanted to lead them.
I feel like there’s a missing puzzle piece, like we need a dedicated mini-specialist team in the squads to assign the FTL to.
“Oh that’s Delta’s recon team. They have a special FTL and a drop pod that fits seven people, who are Recon Riflemen. They drop first and scout.”
“Oh that’s Bravo’s Defense Team. While the Squad Leader can lead people into battle or organize a hold, the Defense Leader and their sentries are the ones who designed that hold point and keep an eye on it.”
Y’know, that reinforced “I know what I’m doing the moment I join” sense that every other role has.
I feel you, but also to my experience, putting my trust that some random jackass knows what they’re doing usually works out in the end. Then again, this is usually because I’m so slow at CAS that most flares are out by the time my FM is ready, lol.
In any case, I feel like keeping role responsibilities open is a good thing. It can prevent boredom from having to stick to a singular task and allows for flexibility in the event something happens and some roles are not available for whatever reason.
GIVE BUFFS TO FT???
This topic seriously deviated from its original goal, lol. I just wanted to get your guys’ opinion and now we’re trying to overhaul the entire FT system.
Hontest to god it would be cool to split RTO and FTL into two roles, one focused on Jtac and Aux and the other being Comtech/medic+
Medic can’t do anything except medic
Too much to process. As soon as there’s contact with enemy medics are fixing people. They can’t do anything else on top of that or else they might as well not be a medic.
SL should be the overwatch of his squad, and the FTL’s should actually lead the squads they’re given.
They would be better if there was more order in the marines. FTL to me is just the RTOs but given nore authority and standard. RTO was purely jtac from what ive heard but FTL has an actual standard.
FTLs are still good since they its a natrual way to decide who is incharge if the SL is unable to command. I think this allows more versatility in the role where you could be a rifleman or comtech with more command or a radio operator that rains hell on the enemy through calling in support. For better or for worss.
revert to rtos, i just wanna be the funny guy with the phone who calls for fire support and gives my SL the phone to call CIC gay for their dumb OBs
Buy a phone bag.
it’s not the same if you’re not THE funny guy with a phone, everyone gets a phone now
Sounded like radio packs got nerfed so nobody can use them anymore except people whose job is specific to them
Here’s my opinion:
I feel like RTO was a better name aesthetically. Still, it felt like the RTO was just a replacement for the SL when they die, which is usually fair since it’s not smart to make a spec the aSL, and SG could be a viable decision for the aSL, but it’s better to give someone aSL with a solid way of communication if comms go down.
I also think making the RTO backpack cost points for RTOs was a bad idea, it just doesn’t make sense if you have to pay for something you should have.
But, it’s just a name change. I would like it to be switched back to RTO but I don’t mind if it stays as FTL.
I agree changing the name to FTL lost soul.
