Rangefinders, Designators, and night vision

Alright everyone, gather round.

I play a lot of SL, and its always bothered me that our JTAC binocs have never had night vision modes installed.

We used to be able to use NVG optics to work around this, and I never thought it was too problematic?

But ever since that was removed, I’ve been wondering how it makes sense that our binocs dont have night vision.

Quite literally all modern rangefinder and laser designators have some variety of night/thermal vision optics installed.

In terms of balance also, I dont think its too outlandish that we’d actually be able to see what we’re marking, rather than just waving the mouse around, and looking at the bottom left to see what the tile is called.

But, that said, I can acknowledge that I dont have a lot of experience frontlining as a Xeno, so I was hoping I could pose the following to my fellow ideasguys, and get some feedback.

My ideasguys:

Give all Rangefinders and Laser Designators (but not regular binocs) an inbuilt night vision optic, with a LIMITED battery equivalent to that of a standard helmet night vision optic.

Allow night vision mode to be toggled with an ability button at the top of the screen.

  • Yes, give Rangefinders and LDs night vision by default, as described
  • Yes, give Rangefinders and LDs night vision, but make users have to purchase a regular NV optic separately, and put it in
  • No, I dont think Rangefinders or LDs should have night vision at all

at this rate why not make the night vision optic work with the LDs and Rangefindres

Because NVGs are already extremely powerful, the ability to know exactly what’s going on onscreen is incredibly powerful, the ability to extend that vision to the range of binoculars would be absolutely ABSURD.

If NVGs were to be added to rangefinders, they’d probably need to be specific, spec-level, or come with some massive downsides.

just make them require recharging like current NV optics do, with how it is right now i almost never see NVG optics get used more than the 15 minutes it lasts

All gun x4 scopes and binocs should have NVGs/low light vision anyway. Battlefield conditions change too fast for that to be overpowered. Simply give them a windup for use and do not allow to move at all when looking trough.
They should be inconvinient to use, but if used then shouldn’t be limited by vison of where marines are, or were and thrown some flares.
Make then “normal-sized”, give them aforementioned windup for use, a slowdown after using them akin to moving without undeploying bipod and such. Add a mechanic that taking them them out/putting them into satchel requires a windup too (but let it be still instant for that special drop pouch that only takes one item and works like a mag harness).

“Oh no, I can see what is happening in my line of sight 3 screens away, distance that the slowest xeno, or marine moves in few seconds, this ammount of information is absurd!”

Yes, I also saying gun x4 scopes should get NVGs. Nobody uses them because they suck so much.

Just bring back NVG optics on helmet working with binocs and problem solved.

It keeps it rare (since only a handful of roles can even buy NVG’s) while giving them an actual use outside of the random fragger using it to see a few tiles ahead, and they already need to be recharged if used constantly so its not a big deal.
