Almost half the Marine force speaking Russian is quite insane though.

russian being a universal secondary language and half the Almayer being polyglots who speak german, spanish, chinese, japanese, russian and english completely fluently at the age of 20 is literally the epitome of CM soul and no one can say otherwise

If your name isn’t in the language list, it ain’t a real one.

Turkeys don’t even have a concept of language

Being able to speak two or more languages at 20 is a weird concept only for people born in English speaking countries.

Its almost as if chinese, russian, spanish, english and japanese are all state languages of major empires so it makes sense your character could just know it

Half a Marine force speaking Russian and/or Japanese is odd especially considering these are languages used by rival nation-states. Half the Marines speaking Portuguese or Spanish would be logical considering those nations are apart of the United Americas.

Something tells me half the Marines fighting in the Pacific didn’t speak Japanese, nor those storming Normandy would all known German. Did all the grunts sent into Vietnam speak Vietnamese? What about Korean for those in the Korean War? Or Russian/Ukrainian/Belarusian throughout the Cold War?

This isn’t really a issue that needs addressing, but I continually find it amusing that when you see some UPP guy show up on the Almayer, suddenly half the PFC Marines can now speak fluent Russian.

Quick googling revealed me that about 10% of American soldiers spoke German during WWII, about the same amount spoke Italian or even were ethnic Italians. 10% is pretty huge.

Also saying “fluent” is a bit misleading, there are no in-game mechanics that represent different levels of knowing a language, but you can imagine that knowing a language doesn’t necessarily mean “fluent”, but just “understanding”.

your typical jarhead of the variety found on the USS Almayer would only know another language that isnt spanish if they were an officer or specifically an immigrant from TWE
upp are communists nobody escapes commie land over oceans bro no way, so we should just remove non-marine officers speaking russian and chinese at the very least and make languages more expensive as a baseline

Just a fun fact: there are descendants of Russian colonists in Alaska and even of natives who were taught Russian centuries ago who still speak the language. I’m not even talking about immigration or people who study languages as a hobby.

I mentioned it

doesn’t look like there would be a lot of overlap with conscripted felons

Learning foreign languages in the army is such a weird idea… Oh wait.
