If I remember correctly, it was a video which contained various formulas on how to create various (actual) drugs in it.
Appeal
My understanding at the time is that the video did not contain actual recipes and that they were gag recipes, but it’s fair enough that someone seeing them would not even want to take the chance given Discord ToS. I’d been toeing plenty of lines at that point, so it’s fair enough that staff would rather just not deal with that kind of behavior whatsoever.
It’s been (I believe) a year and a half or two years at this point, I’d just like to check in with some friends and see how the community is going.
Hi Mr. Beagle. Per Merriam-Webster, it means to “lend money at high rates rates of interest”… e.g. when Shylock demanded a pound of flesh.
And to pre-empt this, because it’s obvious what the basis of the question is, my reason for using it is, at a personal level, I’m ethnically Jewish and work in finance. So it’s a play on that.
Someone who simply does a cursory Google of Shylock is going to conclude that it is some anti-semitic representation. This is not the case. I had an image but can’t add it for some reason - please see Act III Scene 1, Lines 52-72 of Merchant of Venice.
Shylock has plenty of ugly qualities to him (as does any character in any piece of media worth its salt), but so too do the characters who cheat him, subject him to a gross show trial, and force him to become a Christian. The fact that people have used the character to put forward ideas of anti-semitism is extremely unfortunate but is neither surprising nor in anyone’s control.
It’s basically the equivalent of someone taking a Boondocks character or a Curb Your Enthusiasm character and using it as a justification for anti-black or anti-semitic behavior or beliefs. Those kinds of people were always going to act that way - to argue that those pieces of media are therefore anti-black or anti-semitic by virtue of misled/malicious interpretations would be dismissing the people of those ethnic/cultural groups who rationally interpret the material and its place in their identities.
Unfortunately nowadays any Jewish anything is leveraged in one form or another by XYZ groups to put forward their own interests (be it anti-semitism, zionism, etc etc). I can’t control that the Jewish people have been shrouded in thousands of years of conflict and complications. But I can make individual, rational interpretations of the material I see and how it fits into my identity.
I’m not wedded to this username or anything, but 1. Nipping it in the bud that I am very much not anti-semitic (incl. reclaiming the Shylock character) and have a personal connection to it.
2. This was my username for quite a long time pre-ban, and obviously that’s not a prima facie justification, but this was discussed/inquired about before and I said the same thing then.
Long schpeel for a short question but that’s the world we live in unfortunately.
