SlippyJoe - Staff Report: Enforcement Action Taken - Segrain

What’s your BYOND key:

SlippyJoe

Round ID:

17652

Your character name:

Shelby Laylington

Their BYOND key:

Segrain

What are you reporting?:

Enforcement Action Taken

Description of the incident:

First off, I’ll quote the note so we all have context here;

“Heavy warning - griefing. As marine, came into contact with a body of a survivor who just had been shot to death by another marine mistaking him for a CLF survivor. Proceeded to further shoot the dead body with a smartgun and boast about killing “wy asshole”. by segrain (Maintainer) on 2023-07-09 10:51:05”

And now, my side of the story.

Preamble on character: Shelby has a character, I’m not gonna go into details, but the plain and simple is she’s against what she views as illegitimate hierarchies, she boasts, she’s a bit macho and pretty butch.
So obviously, she isn’t a WY fan.
She’s kept track of the “W-Y assholes” she’s killed.
I’ve mentioned this multiple times on various rounds. It’s not a thing I created for this round, it’s been in her blood for a bit.

The round in question: So. LV. A CLF guy shows up. I’m a smart gunner.
They instantly start firing on us in Engineering.
So, I and other marines give chase.
Then a van shows up, this van hits Marines. So they all pile in and kill the driver.
Because I’m a dumbass, it takes me a few seconds to get in. They’re already dead, as I’m a Smartgunner, I haven’t got a hud or anything. I shoot them, I didn’t count how many times, once I think, but again, It’s a smartgun and I keep track of ammo like I keep track of the price of apples in China. That being, I don’t.
They’re dragged out, and revived.
Shelby comes out of the van, and boasts about ‘killing another W-Y asshole’ to that effect.
When, again, she had barely any part of it.

Claiming that I was acting maliciously to another random player is a falsehood. If I believed that “being WY is an excuse for round removal” I’d have killed the other also WY survivor.
I feel silly even having to reiterate this, but I am not my character. I have heavily PRO WY characters (Sadie Mason, Willow White, Grace Lettford), I have anti ones (Shelby, Mallaidh, Ashwiyaa) and I have neutral ones (the rest).
That’s the nature of a roleplaying game.
I never thought, not intended to ‘prevent [them] from being revived’. I have no idea where that claim came from. I didn’t prevent them from being revived, I let the Medics work and escorted them back to the FOB.

To quote rule 4, “Griefing is the intent of one player wanting to cause grief or annoyance to other players or the server without a valid roleplay reason”.
Not only did I have no intent to intentionally cause annoyance to another player, I firmly believe this is how my character would act.

Get me a bible, or a copy of City of Death and I’ll solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

I hold no ill will towards Segrain, I entirely understand they were just doing their job and they have gone with their heart on this. I respect it, and I respect the members of this staff team and I do hope they don’t think of me as rude for making this thread. But they are not infallible, it’s why this forum has been made.

I will of course respect every, any and all outcomes of this thread. Even if I don’t like it.

Greetings.
I will not go on a lengthy rant about the ages old “this is what my character would do” here. The crux of the matter is simple: if you shoot a revivable body, you make it that much harder for that body to actually be revived. That contributes to removing a player from the round just as directly as killing that body to begin withal does. And shooting at peaceful survivors for no reason is not acceptable, no matter how anti-WY your character is.

Thanks for the reply.
I understand it’s a weak defense. But it’s the truth. Being accused of ‘griefing’ when that was never the intent is the main issue I have.
IE, or sanity? Somewhat understandable. But to be called a griefer is just incorrect, in my view.

Anyway.
I disagree with the use of ‘peaceful survivor’. The driver of the van had hit and ran over Marines, tensions were especially high with the active shooter.

But still, I harbour no ill will towards you, or anyone involved as stated. This is merely a difference of opinion, view?
Unsure on the term, but I’ve posted this to get a third opinion, essentially.

Edit: I should state I don’t consider the preamble section as a defence, it’s to relay context of why I acted the way I acted.
Again, as I said, if round removal were my intent I would not have let the dead one be revived or let the other one live. If griefing were my intent, I would have done more than fire a simple shot (or however many rounds are per click with a Smartgun.)

Rule 4
If Staff believes that the player’s intent is to grief, then action will be taken whether or not it was the player’s intent.

There’s a difference between starting conflict with a WY character because of your character’s personality, quirks, etc…

Versus permanently causing someone injuries they can’t be revived. Usually “War crimes” are considered a marine law matter, but that falls under outright hostile antagonists such as CLF/Hostile ERT (Merc raiders)/UPP during HvH events.

It’s a valid warning, and no protocols were violated.
