Explain it to someone with next to no knowledge on DDOSSING. How is it done, why is someone doing it, isn’t it expensive, who would have the funds to all of this?
Most importantly, how do I play CM? Crystal Keep is a few days away and I do not want to find out BYOND collapsed before I could open the servers. Because I really only now found out that the place is getting DDOSSED.

It’s just some ruskies who want BYOND to go open source, dunno why they’d think this would work but it can’t stop anyone from playing games via direct so it doesn’t matter anyways
it’s not working, John.
Basics of DDOS: when you do anything online, like go to a website, you send packets of data that request for information, and the server hands back information. For the 1000ish people online, each one every few seconds is asking for requests and is getting responses. The server is set up to handle that. What if you blast the server with 1,000,000 requests per second though? The server slows to a crawl trying to handle ‘everyone’s’ request, even though nearly all are troll requests. The real requests are buried and timeout or barely get answered. The packet data and IPs can be faked so it can be hard to block, or tell which requests are real and which ones are fake.
Is it expensive? not really, a few modern computers using all their power could probably do it…depending on the receiving servers. I assume Byond’s servers aren’t as powerful as say google’s.
The real problem is it is traceable and punishable by just about all countries. You try this in a sane country, you go to jail and pay fines for the damage you caused, which to a business could be huge. Too bad Russia has bigger issues to worry about than some guy with a few computers disrupting a game 1000 people play.
