Reason for Ban
“dont post a video with literal nazi images in it thanks”
Appeal
I created and posted a satirical video edit based on The Incredibles, framed as a meme about a fictional “shadow council” removing long-standing players. The edit used a rapid montage of images from various points in CM history, some recent, some very old, as part of that joke.
One image, which appears for one second, included two small stills from the infamous movie “The Producers”, specifically the fictional play “Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden.” This work is widely recognised as anti-fascist satire. It was created by Mel Brooks, a Jewish WWII veteran who lost family members in the Holocaust and who repeatedly and explicitly stated that the films purpose was to ridicule and undermine Nazism, not glorify it.
The image was included as it was a satirical jab at old CM, it has Gerdy Grabbins, the bald, old, decrepit maintenance goblin who crawled through the ship’s vents, often near nude…in a firing squad, alongside a no-nonsense, extremely strict CO who was obsessed with SoP, ML and being by the book. Like most other stills in the video, it is clearly a ridiculous dynamic. The image was not even made by myself, it was posted in the discord and it was merely reused in the one second still.
I would also like to note the broader context and precedent within the CM Discord at the time. Around this period, there were commonly used parody images and stickers, including:
A sticker depicting Grim as Mussolini with the caption “This is not a democracy”.
A whitelist announcement posts, featuring CM staffs characters heads edited onto a historical Nazi photograph.
These images depicted fascist figures, but were clearly understood by the community as parody, and had been for years, the stickers especially seeing frequent use, so they were not legacy things forgotten about. I didn’t even think twice before including the image with this and the source in mind.
I have been in the CM Discord since it started, for years. In all that time, I believe I have only been warned once, and that was for using Discord as an image/video host for a forum report, maybe a year or so ago. I have generally only used the discord to track rule changes, announcements, LRC and very occasionally chats on balance.
If the issue was that the image crossed a line for moderation purposes, I would have removed it if asked. But calling it “Nazi propaganda” is not accurate, and I think the ban is disproportionate given the content and context.
If the ban length is a mistake, apologies for the Tedtalk.
Edit: A photo of the satirical show here, for context.
