Genuine question, why not just poll in game, on forums, or on discord if the r word should be banned?
Because we are not a democracy and people need to be talked down whatâs right and whatâs wrong.
I donât agree with this, there are survivors and research now, and MPs are still considered marine law enforcement as their primary job right? More things for MPs to handle can always get added, but as long as marine law exists, nothing will really change except that some MPs will be focusing on non-marine stuff some of the time. (Side note, IMHO, giving a survivor IFF and confiscating their weapons and giving the weapons back later is not really interesting gameplay after youâve done it a few times)
It wasnât a homogeneous decision amongst staff or management. Some managers were certainly opposed to the change, but it was ultimately ruled the way it was for the sake of consistency with other unpermitted language.
Because banning something with a vote sets a bad precedent. It inevitability leads to the banning of unpopular ideas and minority viewpoints under the guise of vulgarity.
Imagine if staff were all catholics, how fast would people switch sides to protest about âcensorshipâ for banning âsinful activityâ.
I mean if you want to be consistent then a lot more than that should also be off the table.
Iâd have way less of an issue if we werenât labelling people bigots and homophobes etc and just saying theyâre a no-no word user.
If you think more words need to be added for the sake of consistency, feel free to let a staff member know. The r-word was only added after players voiced a growing concern about the word.
Iâm shocked you thought I was being serious.
Also, an extreme minority of players wanted it gone. Far more wanted to keep being able to say it.
I didnât think you were being serious, but as someone who represents the community in a sort of official capacity, Iâm compelled to reply in a limited array of ways. Iâm not offered the same public freedom to say all the things I would sometimes like to say.
That is pretty ridiculous⌠and is just the same issue in a slightly different wrapper.
Who is pushing for the staff and playerbase to be so damn correct.
Id much rather hear staffs honest opinions than some corpospeak placation.
Are we really to a point of staff being scared to speak and passing rules to coddle and protect people so sensative they call a hotline over reading words?
No one is pushing for me to say the things I do in the way I say them. The simple reality is that anything you say is going to upset someone, so itâs better to just be bland and unopinionated, than to have your message screenshotted for a report or blasted in a metacord. If I didnât have responsibilities to this community, Iâd care much less about all that.
Basically anything Biolock says will be interpreted as the absolute position of CMâs management team since he is part of management. If he states something casually or even jokingly, then its very likely that statement will be taken seriously.
Its why lower ranked Moderators (such as myself) are more likely to speak casually or frankly than someone like Biolock who canât afford to. If he said âI donât like this rule changeâ then Iâm sure someone will come along and claim the CM staff are infighting or something akin.
The price you pay for your promotions is a restriction on how you express yourself, I suppose.
That is a sad fate. Like being trapped in a golden cage.
I got called the r-word for years on this server. Even once by a staff. It was in character and I was being a dumbass. So I donât see why âplayersââ growing concern warrants what is unambigously the most two faced half hearted decision I have ever witnessed. You canât say slurs or slur adjacent words.
BUT FUCK IT DELTARD IS FINE
Actually kinda problematic behavior that you allow this slur to get through. If you said it in the past, just own up to it and ban the fucking word. Donât sit here coping that you said a slur but not actually. Makes you seem weak and only banning the r-word as some sort of favor.
The reality is that it was a half-hearted decision because the entirety of the staff team, management, and the player base obviously wasnât behind it. It was, like many other things, a compromise, and sometimes compromises leave everyone unhappy.
Also I am weak, very weak, please be gentle ;-;
I guess it wasnât so much directed at you, but as staff as a whole. And seeing as you are often the only one interacting with the community and not just locking threads you donât like. A lot of unjustified anger gets sent your way, and I do apologize for mine.
Well if staff wasnât behind it the who brute forced the ban through?
A compromise between like 4 people and a few more overly vocal dudes?
Yer telling me thatâs what caused all that humbug?
âentirety of the staff team, management, and the player base obviously wasnât behind it. It was, like many other things, a compromiseâ
Surely by nature thatâs not a compromise thats just an arbitrary diktat, Iâm just strugglying to understand how that account of events can be described as a compromise, like what is it a compromise between (but absolutely appreciate you communicating with us all!)
The âcompromiseâ is referring to the admission of âdeltardâ while all other variants and the core word was disallowed.
