Violation of Event Protocols
Description of the incident:
Context:
Early in the round a MST committed suicide by handgun in front of the CMO Anna ‘Speedster’ Hailey. CMO Hailey moved the body to research to RP an attempted occult resurrection in one of the containment cells. Weird, but not unheard of. The ASO arrived and I watched as they discussed the matter calmly, debating matters of personal faith. Eventually the ASO left and I joined in as researcher because it was the lull in research between early activities and when intel and bodies begin to arrive.
Some time later, the ASO and FORECON survivors (marked as echo squad) entered and told us they had been ordered to purge us (there was some ambiguity if the XO just said research and the CMO, or all of medbay). They were refusing, and we discussed a possible mutiny. I tried my best to continue my tasks as researcher while also RPing being paranoid, arming up, and so on. Forecon and the ASO left, ARES announced that the provost had arrived. Some time later I asked the ASO what was going on, after some RP he more or less said that the provost was dealing with it. At this point I was returning to research, and noticed two alpha eggs left on the ground.
I contacted the CMO via radio and communicated the option of corrupted xenomorphs as obliquely as possible as it’s not uncommon for marines to swarm greenos regardless of command authorization or not. She communicated similarly obliquely that I should begin. Now, from this point forwards I’m mostly in my own world as I go through the steps to relate the chem and so on. I wait for the CMO to arrive, she asks if I’m ready, and I confirm yes. My assumption at this point was that she had contacted CIC in person or via command radio to get permission. We move the alpha egg, reagent, and monkey cube into containment. I’m pretty sure I asked her to confirm that she had permission, but I may be misremembering and do not have access to the logs. Either way, she confirms that she has authorization and I begin the process. We have infected the monkey and I am in the process of dosing it with the ciphering chem. I have to do this by hand with a hypospray because of the intravenous property and extremely low OD. The Provost, SEA, and two enforcers enter containment. The provost stands in the desk space, the enforcers flank them, and he begins asking what’s going on, if the CMO had authorization, and so on. Eventually he orders the monkey to be purged. I RP my protest but don’t stop them. Now CMO and Provost are facing each other in the main containment lobby, south of the desk. I’m standing a little bit north, the SEA is to my west, and both enforcers are in the containment cell ensuring the monkey is dead.
Then the Provost declares that he is battlefield executing the CMO for various crimes, and shoots her dead. From my perspective, the Provost has without warning executed the CMO. No evidence, no explanation, just bang and she’s dead. I retreat north, draw my D18 holdout, and open fire on the provost. I’m killed by the enforcers and SEA. I watch as the SEA is instructed to incinerate the monkey, he and an enforcer exit containment to do so. The other enforcer asks if the CMO and I are dead, and the Provost perma’s both the CMO and I and responds something along the lines of “Now they are.” CMO Anna ‘Speedster’ Hailey and I are ghosted at this point, and agree that the provost’s actions seemed high handed. I ahelped and reported what was going on.
I don’t have access to the logs between SmellyHippie and I, but I explain that I am upset about how the situation was handled. He gives me the report link and tells me to use it if I have any problems with his actions.
Now, I’m pretty sure that all of the Provost’s actions are technically permitted. Ultimately I think I am upset for two reasons.
First: Because of the abrupt nature of the execution, I responded violently to defend my direct superior. The provost said nothing about the XO (who, again, had ordered the research department purged earlier in the ground for silly RP), ASO, or any other CIC officers contradicting the CMO’s story. The provost said nothing about evidence. The provost did not attempt to arrest the CMO. If ANY of those seemingly reasonable actions had been taken, I wouldn’t have responded violently. MPs have to provide reasoning for an arrest in addition to just the crimes. MPs have to adhere to a reasonable escalation of force. I feel the Provost should adhere to those same standards or higher.
Second: I’m upset because it felt like I was being treated like an NPC in some side mission that the Provost was playing. I love CM13 because of the complex social situations, the opportunities to RP and make fascinating stories for all the players, not just myself. The provost’s actions seem to violate the spirit of all of that. Like it was a side mission in a single player game that he didn’t want engage with, so he just kills everyone so he can be done. By simply killing us rather than arresting us, he deprived both himself, the other players present, and myself the opportunity play and RP more, to make an interesting story. I think that is why I’m so upset.
Evidence:
Due to the high volume of chat, I don’t have access to the logs. I’m not sure this is the right way to report this, but I hope someone can talk to those involved about what happened and about allowing the chance for more RP. The player of Anna ‘Speedster’ Hailey may have more to add as she was the other victim in the situation.
