The nerf to Carriers coming

There’s the thread ^^ Yes I spoke my peace on it. They are gutting Carrier completely and the only way I’ve found to make the caste truly viable on the front. This is quite insane and I could go on but I said everything I needed to say in my comment. The bias is truly an ongoing epidemic.

balance: Huggers get activated sooner now, from a minimum of 5 seconds to a max of 15 seconds, to 3.5 seconds and 7 seconds. They still have an average lifespan of 30 seconds after activation, though
balance: Huggers can only hug the person next to them rather from 3 tiles away
balance: Huggers now have 5 tries to jump at someone, from only having 2 tries
balance: All xenos now have a cooldown on dropping or throwing facehuggers
balance: Carriers can now throw their stored facehuggers farther with their throw facehugger ability, from a range of 3 tiles to 6 tiles, nearly screenwide
balance: Carrier facehugger throwing is much faster, from 2 seconds to 5 deciseconds, much faster than the standard xeno cooldown
balance: Carrier facehugger retrieval from their storage now has a 5 decisecond cooldown, matching their throw cooldown

I usualy dont call it out like that because its a cliche but this PR just screams of ‘‘I died to it so that means that mechnic is bad’’ but instead of a simple players, there is a whole as dev who decided to nerf it out of spite and salt (all while calling it ‘‘rework’’ or “rebalance” instead of ‘‘nerf’’ of course)

idlehuggers were on the chopping block for years, nothing has changed, just that people have started abusing the 3 tile range action is now being taken

You’d have to probably play carrier often to understand how that’s a massive nerf at first glance. I can see how it doesn’t look like that to someone who’s more casual on the caste (not an insult btw we all have our preferences)

Carriers can drop a hugger on the front, in time that hugger primes (its now ready to leap at a marine within 3 tiles) if you understand the average marine players way of thinking and are good at distracting them they may not take notice to a well hidden hugger around a corner that can then leap at them. Hugging them, (capturing them is a different story) This allowed carriers to have utility on the front in ways of survivability and hive sustainability. The only way this tactic is effective is if marines carelessly push in a fool-hardy fashion, you have the potential to hug multiple marines if you happen to be prepared with primed huggers in the right places (no guarantee their AI will even work as intended) it allowed carrier to do more than place obvious traps under things and slap a hugger on a scree’d marine. It allowed me to move about freely on my own behind enemy lines or on the front as long as I was always understood I needed to have a well placed hugger or two incase a marine tried to rush me down because i am otherwise a defenseless caste

This type of strategy punished marines who would try to rush me down solo (and I’d let them get me to low hp) just to run around a corner and boom they get hugged for being careless and thirsty for my carrier hide. This allowed teamwork cohesion as dropping huggers in boiler gas would let some of the huggers prime before it dissipates (hugging marines who aren’t paying attention and charge through the gas as it fades) And of course covering your queen who would go to the front and screech and marines couldnt charge her down carelessly because theres 7 primed huggers around the corner.

All in all, this type of play only worked by punishing fool-hardy marine behavior and rambo type playstyles. I capitalized on marine aggression to feed the hives numbers, understanding diverting marine attention elsewhere, resulted in a primed hugger landing it’s target.

What the “devs” are saying basically is that they want marines to not be punished for bad decision making, irrationally charging and fragging out without a care in the world. By removing huggers ability to leap multiple tiles, and my ability to drop huggers in quick succession, this basically gets rid of that strategy altogether. Essentially they are “baby proofing” the marines playpen so they quite literally need to run up and hi-five one of my huggers to get capped.

I don’t know I like carriers but I also found that being an active facehugger you often have no point with a front line carrier. They usually run right over you to cap right in front of you.

you dont understand the complex gameplay of the carrier (hugger AI), it NEEDS to stay as it is to auto jump at them from across the map

It just makes the cringe AI huggers stop disintegrating marines who can barely see in front of them with no counterplay

I remember multiple occasions where a dude would take one step forwards to get immediately hugged with no reaction time because the second someone with 4 tile armour light sees a hugger that’s been activated, they have no reaction time to stop before getting immediately hugged

E.g. people taking out huggers from an egg morpher to pre-prime them so they instant hug anyone who walks near them

The main nerf is the fact that AI huggers go from 3 tile range hugs to 1 tile range hugs, making it infeasible to pre-activate huggers since marines will now have significant reaction speed to shoot them instead of just walking into them blind

I really don’t get the argument that the strategy of pre-priming huggers was somehow just ‘bad decision making’ for marines considering they don’t even have time to make a decision beforehand. Hugger traps punish poor recklessness because they can be detected and avoided at any point. Pre-primed huggers that have an instant leap range almost equivalent to a marine’s visual detection range don’t. They can’t shoot it or avoid walking into it if they don’t even know it’s there, and pre-primed huggers behind doors is just as sadistic as egg morphers hidden under large sprites.

It’s a nerf in the sense that you can’t get as many caps as before, but frankly speaking pre-priming huggers just always felt cheesy as hell, and it’s been on the chopping block for a while I think.

…Why? this dosnt seen like its hugely gonna be a problem, dumping huggers on the floor was a last ditch thing anyway, but like this seems fairly meh.

Oh wait I know why the guy that made the PR died to this

also jokes aside this is gonna make queen scree carrier INSANE cause they can just drop huggers ontop of people with the lower hug warmup.
