Unironically? Yeah, though I’d add more words, toss in the occasional custom-emote about an action that is implied by your movements or gameplay actions (Such as taking a drag of a cigarette, holstering a firearm, raising a firearm or gnawing on a MRE component like some sort of rat), and bam, now you’re HRP.
Roleplay just boils down to one big exercise of real-time collaborative creative writing, though it is more akin to improvisational comedy practice, than something like the SCP Foundation.
Ideally you’d want to always want to give room to expand on a given roleplay situation; a good principle for this is ‘Yes, and…’ (Or in some cases, ‘No, and…’), simply put, it provides more opportunities to continue the conversation than just saying ‘Okay.’ or ‘Affirmative’, and running off, and it tends to engage other people in the roleplay, other than just sharing information and doing the bare minimum.
(Though usually you don’t want to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ outright, and instead imply it by the way your dialogue is written, at its most basic, either a positive or negative tone. You can even integrate the Solid Snake method instead of using ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ at the start of each piece of dialogue!)
An Example of What I Mean -- CLICK ME!!!
An example of the example provided by AnCopper that was re-written by me to follow my vague ‘Yes, and..’ inspired rule-of-thumb style of roleplay is provided below, along with notes of my thought process, which is in italics under the writing:
Squad Leader: “We’re pushing to engineering.”
You: ‘Engineering? Given the state of this colony so far, its probably a tetanus-ridden pile of scrap verging on collapse.’
This first line is more-so setting up possible future remarks, and setting the tone of the conversation; Someone who roleplays as someone with a more stoic or optimistic usual mood probably wouldn’t insult the infrastructure, but roleplaying a pessimist is easy!
Squad leader: ‘Yeah, heavy xenomorph activity has been reported there.’
You: ‘Heavy xenomorph activity? We’re in for one hell of a brawl.’
Something you could do is reference the previous comment, and make a remark about making sure to be careful around rusted metal, or jokingly inquiring if the squad-leader is up-to-date on their tetanus ‘shots’, which you could then make a friendly-fire joke from.
Squad leader: ‘Thats right, stay sharp’.
You: ‘Stay sharp..’
You could also make another witty remark, such as ‘But not rusty!’.
This is usually my stream-of-thinking when I roleplay, at least You want to ALWAYS add to the conversation.
Also, real HRP gamers say ‘Stay frosty’! Its only lore accurate!
Oh god… I’m being genuine in Acid Goop.. I’m providing genuine roleplay advice… in Acid Goop… Its over for me…
