Synthetic Info:

Name of the Synth Character you wish to play:

Mattius

Provide a short description of your synthetic’s backstory

Beloved children’s show and gameshow host Frank Mattius- “uncle Mattius” died 2180. A icon to many and hope to all, even adults in the deepest regions of space. He taught children and adults alike that they were valuable, loved, and worthy of love- both self love and external, no matter who they were, and rather than shy away from difficult or scary topics, taught them in understandable empathetic ways, and when he was not doing that he was giving them entertainment via his colourful game shows and competitions. For many he was both the man who taught them to tie their shoelaces, the man they watched every sunday spray contestants with colourful slime, and the man that taught them what divorce means for a child. A former royal marine medical officer turned chemistry school teacher prior to the success of his first show “uncle mattius and the thinking room”, he knew first hand the struggles of frontier life and did not want anyone to feel alone and abandoned- and thus arranged for a synthetic based on his neural pattern and appearance to be made to serve as an education synth to distant colonies. The main purpose of the synthetic remains education but in part due to the encyclopedic trivia knowledge in its memory banks, and its intended use in frontier colonies it is also a capable all purpose synthetic.

Describe your synth’s personality without mentioning their skills or previous professions

Empathetic, easy going, sincere, and understanding, and occasionally the source of life and simple joy and fun. The Mattius model is there for to assist, and be there for you as a friend and mentor. Through professional struggles and personal. He is designed to help those in immensely difficult situations and has the empathy and social skills to broach these situations with great tact and understanding, and the ability to share in the pain of the colonists via advanced emotional capacity. He listens to concerns not always to find a solution- but because he simply wishes to be there for someone, and share in their emotions to make them a little easier to carry. Sometimes a colonist does not need a smiling robot, saying its all going to be ok, they just need someone to understand. When he can practically assist he will of course do so to ease the burden both emotional and physical. He is the single most reliable thing aboard many ships and within more colonies.

He also has an element of whimsy and fun loving about him, occasionally starting simple games and breaking down harsh situations using them.

How would your synthetic interact with enlisted personnel, officers and civilians? How could you involve your personality into these interactions?

Civilians:
Mattius bread and butter, he is designed to handle very unstable individuals with tact and calmness (and when needed, brutal efficiency courtesy of the TWE). He would enquire what is troubling the individuals, listen and if possible offer council or assist.

Enlisted:
Mattius knows the enlisted are grown men but men who regularly face difficult challenges to mental and physical health. He would be there as a mentor figure and source of assistance and advice, and bearer of interesting trivia and games. He is after all, a showman. When the situation is less dire he may even have prizes for those that engage with his games and answer correctly.

Officers:
Mattius has been programmed to handle officers with respect and obedience while still respecting they are still human and may occasionally need a mentor figure. He will primarily offer practical assistance to ease the many matters officers juggle, but if he believes they are struggling may offer words of advice and council. Officers too, may be subjected to his games if the situation is appropriate.

Why do you want to be a synthetic/why should we whitelist you?

Frankly I did not wish to apply before when the WL was mainly valued extreme mechanical skill over all else, but I have seen it appears to be changing to a RP focus and I am a sucker for unique RP opportunities. I think the idea of something that is programmed to completely understand human feelings, and even have something like them itself- and yet know it is fundamentally different is a very unique thing to RP. This is why I have chosen to play an extremely empathetic synthetic with the flare for presentation and show business of Mattius, aware some of his memories and deeply held beliefs are not his own and yet all the same so important to him. Is that because he too believes in them after knowing so much about the inner struggles of the man he is based on, or simply because he is programmed to believe them?

Its all very Bicentennial Man.

What is your most memorable interaction with a synthetic?

I was dying behind enemy lines as a SO. I resign myself to death, and this was a time when I did not play xeno so that would mean I was out for the next couple of hours. Then an angel with a fire axe caved in the resin around me and recovered me, fleeing to the colony medical with an IO, where they promptly operate remove my larva and save me. Vaughn is not fond of synthetics, and soon after the synth in question made a comment about being hopeful this meant they were trusted more. I had not seen this synthetic in a good week, and it struck me as noteable they held onto a small bit of information to RP with what was at the time a nobody name that no one knew. I aspired to keep track of similar small bits to be able to RP since. Second to that was a long talk about the nature of synthetic life with a synth.

Synthetic Character Story:

Skills:

How familiar are you in CMs support roles such as medical/engineering/requisitions/command and which of them are you more and less proficient in?

My CIC based leadership is passable at best, but I have a deep understanding of the theory behind command and like to think myself an excellent SL, I do better in small leadership than large scale leadership. I am extremely proficient in medical and engineering, engineering was my first love in this game and many others via CT and SL, and my medical skills have simply grown with SO,XO and corpsman, and SL time. I detest req but I am more than capable or reluctantly running it to a high standard due to my time there as SO and SEA. If i had to pin a best and worse, engineering and medical are my best, req is my worst.

What are some scenarios that you can perform combat in? Give us a brief example.

Broken these up into roughly decreasing amounts of mobility and increasing sentry behaviour

I am moving to the front after waking late. A runner is trying its utmost to kill me. combined with a lurker. I am with a single rifleman. Its debatable I could perhaps run, but the rifleman would certainly die. I would defend myself and the rifleman, with an aim to keep moving towards the front and relative safety.

I am assisting in setting up sensors. A burrower is generally being a pain and preventing the marines I am with doing so. I am permitted to smack it a few times in the head and pursue it away a bit away till it disengages when I would then return to the sensors being careful to not go too far and start chasing it down. If it does not disengage and flee and I happen to kill it all is fair.

Delta alert, two CLF spot me and open fire, causing further security concern alongside hijack. I am within my rights to provide an excellent education on what is not appropriate conduct towards those in need. I pacify one and the other of them decides this is not going their way and attempts to flee. Mattius is rather sorry but, you remain an active security threat. Its completely normal to be afraid of death. Allow mattius to ease you into it. He would disengage if he saw more pressing matters like running past a dead marine

Final Info:

Have you been banned in the last month?

Not that I know of…

Do you have anything else you would like to include about your application?

Thank you for consideration. I tried to push my combat examples to be less cookie cutter and clear. If there is anything terribly wrong I only ask it is denied sooner rather than later so I can make the needed corrections sooner.

I will during my apps play my medical and engineering roles as vaughn for easy observability.

Surprised no one’s taken an interest or replied, so I’ve got a few questions for you.

Marines come in all types of levels of Roleplay. This means that every interaction and experience with a marine is different and has different expectations for how you should handle the interaction. There are many situations where your Synth will be insulted, bullied, and overall harassed.
Especially in recent times, with the rise of AI, and so on, ‘clanker’ and other LRP terms have become common.

How would you handle a marine dragging you around, pulling you, stopping you from working?

How would your Synth respond to being insulted casually?

How would you handle a command that is pushing you towards actions that would breach our guidelines, I.e “Synth go to sensors and fix it alone.”

Ill be honest- the senator being the first person to reply made me quietly search my app for the programming violation or whatever was clearly about to get me denied after only a day up when I saw the replying indicator….

In my experience stupidity comes in herds but never by itself. I would say i have pressing matters and ask they stop. If that doesn’t work I would ask a nearby marine to do something about them. If I am completely alone it would be an ahelp. A trained marine would not be interrupting a synthetic clearly working without very good reason. This is clearly LRP. The fact deputised synths are permitted to make arrests without violation of core code •4 leads me to believe I would additionally if needed be within my rights to tackle them and move away.

Mattius is quite a classy unit, and approaches hostile situations from a perspective of trying to understand so responses would be a mix of IC trying to understand the marine and OOC getting the player to cut it.

If it is a direct insult, responses such as “Why would you say such a rude thing?” Immediately draws attention to what they said being below board and are somewhat embarrassing for the marine. Disagreements with “robots“ being in the marines can be responded to neutrally to end the conversation using a shutdown approach. “Hm. You might have a point. I’ll raise your concerns to the commander and get his opinion sometime.“ IC shows the nature of mattius and ooc ends the conversation. Because there is now limited responses to be made. These that can be made can be shut down equally easily.

If it was just direct LRP terms like clanker, ill admit I would be tempted to respond with the classics. “I prefer the term artificial person myself.“ Besides that, I’d just respond as above perhaps an ahelp if they continue on.

Synthetic are not toasters, they can interpret a command. I would interpret it as best i could without breaking guidelines with as little alteration as possible. Was it not for the last bit I would of gone with some marines. Beings as they directly state alone- I would inform them this is unwise and I would require at least a few rifleman as fire suppport to be able to comply due to higher self preservation directives. If an officer tried to pull weight i would inform them my preservation directives are not only coded but ordered under the authority of General XXX due to unit cost.

my only issue with your APP is that i feel in your back story that your trying to hard to be different from other synth. i feel that when trying to push to be “different” That can get very tricky. like you really are just like any other synth this also doesn’t explain very well how why it makes sense that the USCM would want your synth or how its backstory actually makes it something in a military situation. plus when it comes to this does this mean that your synth has some emotion? like a human? if so this will not pass and I would highly suggest you withdrawal your app.

also they don’t have a complete understanding of human emotion they are biochemical emotionally mute robots. they just mimic emotion its like a very strong grey area.

I think its important to understand that synths arnt humans. they are emotionally mute they are not different then one or the next one. I’m not saying you should not post this or have more creative ideas but I personally see a bit of myself first making an APP in this and i want to see your succeed. also be sure to actually mention all of the support roles more like I.E med or req those are mostly the only roles you will be playing as a synth. Just understand that although synths have an ability to use emotion they typically take the ladder i feel.

Solid story. Competent and all around good guy. Is already a Mentor and Pred. He has my +1

I am going to defend vaughns app here a little bit, and explain.

Synths are robots, this is true, but a lot of people forget they’re being piloted by humans. I gave Vaughn the direct advice of this. It allows for synth players to make mistakes and explain them - and, since they’re controlled by humans, to explain why they wouldn’t have complete 100% reasoning. Synths are able to emulate and copy emotions, and display the full emotion range of humans; the only difference is that its entierly for show.

This is wrong; they do have complete understanding of human emotion. They only mimic emotion to blend in, yes, but that doesn’t mean they cannot understand why a person would feel panic, stress, anger, and so on. Again, going back to my point, synths are controlled by humans, so to have perfect 100% reasoning is an impossible task to manage and place onto a person.

i cant argue with that i guess just thought it seemed off to previous apps that I did that did, not succeed i gave them a heart. but if im wrong then i hope they get approved. it actually is a very impressive app with lots of character and creativity.

Hi Vaughn: I’m no one official but I just wanted to ask you a few questions about the gameplay side of Synthetic, there’s a lot of unknown situations that you might encounter that I had to struggle with and you have to play by a ruleset when encountering them which can make things a little complicated.

All but 1 of these scenarios I’ve encountered so far:

  • You wake up, and under instruction of the CO rush planetside as there are “many wounded, and few corpsmen”. You deploy without any form of surgery tools, and there is not enough metal on FOB to use Engineering tools to make do. A Marine asks you to fix her bones, and gets aggressive when you refuse. How would your Synthetic handle this?

  • You are asked to build FOB by the XO, alongside the Bravo CT and you comply. While building, you notice the Bravo Technician is building extremely poorly, making tight chokes for Marines and generally building barricades that hurt Marines than help them. How would your Synthetic handle this, if they would bring it up at all?

  • You’re administering medicine to a Marine alongside a Corpsman, and in a lapse of judgement you catastrophically OD a Marine on Oxycodone. How would your Synthetic handle this?

  • LV-624: You are assigned to FOB and you comply. You hear that the Comms Tower in Engineering is running low on batteries, so you are called to move there to help the Marines replace it or set up generators. Only one Engineer is there. As you repair generators together, a Lurker jumps on her and instantly kills her. It is you, a Lurker and a dead Marine in Engineering. What does your Synthetic do?

I haven’t seen a lot of Vaughn lately, probably timezones >:( but I’ve fond memories of him and given he’s already a moderator and a predator trusting him with another honor code won’t be too difficult I believe

Food for thought indeed.

Im tempted to say I would always have surgical gear when deploying if I can help it, but then again I don’t have the WL so perhaps I will realise improvised surgery is the space saving way to go! If I found myself in this situation and I could not see any method through which to obtain metal, I would explain the situation “Sorry pal, I’ve not got any bone gel or metal to bolt you back together with. If you can find some metal im more than willing. ” This gives the marine the initiative. If she remains aggressive i would attempt to de-escalate “easy there buddy no need for that. I physically lack the equipment I need, i would otherwise. I rushed my deployment a tad because the commander reckoned you needed me!” If they storm off, let them storm off with whatever closing remarks they please. If they carry it on “sorry bud, cant help you unless i find or get given metal. I’m needed elsewhere. Hope it gets sorted some how.“ and leave.

Break out the mentor hat and give them some pointers. Folding cades on the edge, try and break up long barricade lines with folders. Recess them slightly to force hostiles into firing lines if they want to damage the cades. Always try and imagine how easy it is for marines to get in and out and remember the APC. Worded in more 1980’s TV host style of course.

Despite my very best attempts I was unable to arrange my conversion to the borg before my application (I jest) so I am still human. To err is to be human. I would admit my mistake, play it off as an “over administration due to autoinjector error“ or “Miscalculation of body mass“ and if I had it handy stick them on the portal dialysis. If I didn’t I would treat it like any other OD. Can I support them through it with medication and defibs, or do they need medbay/FOB.

The situation is murky and im working on partial information here. I assume that the fact they was jumped means the area is not fully enclosed and secure. Under the small group clause, I would defend my patient attacking to see off the lurker, if it did not disengage including killing it, then grab my patient and return to FOB. I believe despite technically being within my rights to remain at comms while I revived the tech it would violate the spirit of self preservation.
