Synthetic Info:

Name of the Synth Character you wish to play:

Hyde

What is your Synthetic’s Personality?

Hyde was originally specially built for a powerful man to serve as a companion and personal assistant in his later life. Upon his death Hyde was bought by the UA government and taken into the custody of the USCM.
Hyde appears to be later in life, mid-forties to early sixties.
His face is wise. He is knowledgeable on a range of subjects, and is a jack of all trades. His weakest area is Chemistry, though his knowledge is deep enough to apply when urgently needed. His strongest area is Supply.
He is friendly towards marines and officers alike. His voice is soothing and calm.

How will they react to the different ranks of the USCM, what would they talk about in a one on one conversation? What are their interests? What is an advertisement logline that could be written for them?

Hyde was built to converse with the higher echelons of society, so he is heavily versed in correct etiquette and is respectful and polite to all unless they give him a valid reason not to be. At which point he would disengage as possible.
He would be jovial and make jokes with marines, and would actively help take care of them. He would show due respects to officers, that is too say exactly how he treats everyone else that is not actively unfriendly or aggressive. In general, Hyde is a concise individual. He would be quiet unless the need arose for him to speak, or he is spoken to. In urgent situations, Hyde would be on the ball and relay relevant information. In more relaxed environments Hyde may: make jokes with marines, assist them with tasks, provide wisdom and advice, and is capable of general counselling and psychological assessments.

Why do you want to be a synthetic/why should we whitelist you?

I would like to be a synthetic because I think they are very cool. Ultimately.
I think you should whitelist me because:
I enjoy support gameplay, especially supply and fort building. Though I am do have plenty of knowledge with medical.
I also think I could provide some really unique roleplay for people in this role. I’m especially interested in the roleplay opportunities a surv synth could have. Things like being a hermit, or gifting the marines with beer.

What is your most memorable interaction with a synthetic?

Taking the Normandy with a synth after hijack, many moons ago. Me and another wounded marine trying to fend off forsaken while the synth desperately tried to treat both of our mortal wounds. It was incredibly tense and we had a cool conversation about our plan to survive before the onslaught arrived. Then we got overwhelmed.

Synthetic Character Story:

Hyde glided along the metallic hallways with an unprecedented look of urgency upon his face. The Almayer creaked around him. A siren rang out, “WARNING: Unscheduled dropship departure. Hijack likely.” He glanced behind him, a look of concern on his face. He was dragging a marine in a roller bed, the man was groggy and delirious from drugs and the grasp of death. His body was broken and his organs battered. He knew if this man’s heart gave out now, there was no saving him. The injured man made a strange noise, half gurgle, half groan: “Uueeuggh-” Hyde examined his dog tags, then spoke soothingly “You’ll be alright Harry. I’ve got you.” He smoothly turned a corner, taking care not to jostle the gurney the man was strapped to.
The lifepods were eerily empty. After checking the area was clear, Hyde unfurled a small surgical kit from his bag and began to carefully and diligently open Harry’s legs up. Though it was a shattered mess of shards and meat, Hyde’s skilled eyes unpicked the contents of it and began to reset the tissue, carefully structuring it as necessary. He heard footsteps creaking up the staircase. He glanced around, and saw a heavily armored marine touting a machine gun on his back. Hyde recalled that his name was Luis. He was french, and spoke little. Hyde was unsure if he had time to figure out whether that was because he didn’t speak much at all, or didn’t speak much english. Though the thought of greeting him in his mother tongue crossed the Synthetic’s mind.
He gave the man a curt nod, and returned to his patient. He heard the man behind him begin setting up defenses around the lifepods, and the doctor. The clunks of a machine gun going up and the hollow beeps of a still Motion Detector assuaged Hyde’s worries and he worked even more steadily on his ward. The man was smashed to pieces, but still clinging on. His eyes peered at the ceiling above him, empty and unfeeling. But the unsteady rise and fall of the man’s chest signified there was still hope.
15 minutes had passed. No one else had arrived. A faint ping had been heard once, but it quickly ran away. Harry was largely pieced back together and was now calmly sleeping. He would awake in a short amount of time (mostly) as good as new, if a little more scarred and aching. Hyde turned his attention to their surroundings. He was unsure of why there were so few people at the lifepods, but glad of Luis’ presence to help him secure the injured Harry.
Hyde spoke ‘Luis, où sont les hommes? Où est tout le monde?’ The frenchman looked up, obviously startled to be hearing his mother tongue. He grinned and then responded quietly in English, “Holding the boats, the last I heard. But anything could’ve happened to them… We have had no word from the officers.” Hyde nodded. He glanced to a screen on his left, there was still 5 minutes until the lifepod could safely be launched. Harry began to stir, and just as the man flickered back into life, a faint hissing could be heard. Hyde unbuckled Harry, giving him a smile and a pat on the back, and following it up with a final shot of medicine. “You should be alright now Harry, looks like you got real unlucky. We’re at the pods, and have heard nothing from the rest of the crew, just Luis here.” Harry nodded groggily, he sat up off the bed, peering around uneasily. A ping sounded out from the Motion Detector, Luis looked up.

BANG-BANG-BANG

A quick chain of rifle rounds spat out of the barrel of Harry’s weapon, an inhuman screech sounded out from the darkness as luminscient acid blood chewed into the hull of the ship. The hissing got louder. Hyde frowned. He assembled a folding barricade inside the door of his chosen pod. 3 minutes left…
Harry and Luis stood diligently at the barricade line, the synth standing behind them.
A thud could be heard in the distance. Then another. Giant footsteps. Getting louder. The marine’s trigger fingers danced lightly as they shouldered their weapons. Hyde glanced down into his bag. He whispered to the two marines, the giant footsteps were closer now. They could hear the hoard. “I am going to throw a grenade. We are going to run into the-‘’ He was cut off, the hoard emerged from the darkness, a tide of parasitic flesh tumbling through the bowels of the ship. Their horrific bodies tumbled through like a liquid, they were everywhere, the walls, the ceilings. The sound of gunfire echoed loudly, the two marines knocking what they could to the ground, Hyde held a large metallic orb. He pulled the pin, shouted, and hurled the object in front of them. The hive mother let out a blood curdling screech at the same time, freezing the trio in place.
Green flames filled the hall, the scent napalm mixed with burning keratin and flesh hit them, a flaming mass dropped from the wall onto Luis, the Frenchman let out a cry. Hyde rushed to pull the struggling burning mass off of him. A searing pain passed through the synth’s abdomen. Not an unfamiliar feeling, the pain of a 10x24mm round entering his bicep. He winced, the other three rounds were placed firmly into the xenomorph, so he did not mind. The squirming mass gave out a screech before flailing off of the slightly singed, but now recovering Luis.
Hyde grabbed the dazed Luis by the hand, and waved at Harry to follow, the three packed into the lifeboat and Harry pressed the takeoff button. He muttered a quiet prayer.
Hyde medicated Luis and patched himself up. He spoke to the two marines, “I know these things are prone to crashing. But I think if it were going to, it would’ve by now.” Luis nodded. Harry piped up, “What do you think happened to the rest of them, Hyde?” The synth thought to himself for a moment, a slight frown crossed his face, then it returned to its regular unreadability. “I’m sorry Harry, I have no idea…”

Skills:

Engineering:

Familiar. I can repair an APC, comms array, build a FOB, all the necessities and a little bit extra.

Command:

Familiar. I have hours in SL, SO, XO, and other heads of staff. I can manage a CIC and understand how command in this game works.

Medical:

My weakest area, I am still knowledgeable in triage and surgery. Chemistry isn’t my strong suit, but I am able to do it in a pinch.

Requisitions:

Familiar. I regularly play CT and QM and understand how to supply the marines with equipment effectively.

What are some scenarios that you can perform combat in? Give us a brief example.

As a synthetic I would be allowed to perform combat in a defensive manner in order to preserve myself and the life of humans, especially the marines. For example, if the FOB was breached and a burrower started attacking the marine I was treating, I would hit it a little, it would disengage, and I would inform marines. As a synthetic, my combat playstyle would be deterrent and would involved trying to actively disengage the enemy (usually by running).

Final Info:

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason? Do you have any active jobbans?

Nope.

Are you currently banned from our Discord?

Nope.

Let us know why you were discord banned.

Nope.

Do you have anything else you would like to include about your application?

Nope.

Hey,
If possible can you post your hours?
I’ve not really seen you around alot and if you are stating that medical is your weakest, you might want to refine that significantly as synths are extremely good at medical

There’s a few things that really need to be fixed-

-For personality you can start with a job, but what you really need to do is explore specifically the method the character performs that job. They are a personal assistant, but are they doting, surly, immaculately polite? When you’re translating the personality into game, this is how you’re going to show it is by forming an impression of the way the character goes about that job and then putting them into the context of a round.
-Generally speaking the reaction segment appears to be a re-phrasing of a typical tagline of your average Bishop or Esther mass-produced USCM-tailored synthetic. The same baseline goals can be done, but it would be best to tie those goal behaviors into your personality.
-Stories are typically 3-5 pages long, we’re looking for a demonstration of how your character is going to apply their personality to situations you might find in the setting. Essentially, it’s a pitch to show a sample of the character in motion, as opposed to just talking about them in the previous sections. Usually we would recommend referencing the kinds of stories that are included in accepted applications to get an idea of what’s being looked for.
-The cornerstone of synthetic gameplay is, for better or worse, medical. This is almost always an applicant’s strongest suit unless they are truly remarkable at engineering, and will make up the majority of time in game. Medic and doctor performance needs to be mastered.
-The combat example is not quite correct. Combat is not just defensive, but limited to specific context of there being no other allies available to provide force, or in massively hazardous (Delta Alert) situations and additionally tempered by expectations of self preservation. Generally speaking your own life is valued above a human’s, because there is an expectation that you may be able to do something to save them, whereas if you are disabled not only is there likely nobody to save you but the human(s) chance of survival drops drastically without your support.

In the future, the CM discord’s whitelist application help channel is particularly useful for preventing most of the above problems. For now though, these are the reasons for which I am casting a -1

I meant to address that with this, apologies if that point wasn’t clear.

My medical knowledge is more than enough to play as a synth. I may not have many hours as a doctor, but my surgery and triage skills are well developed from playing corpsman and SO.

Personally, in this scenario I would retreat:

If this story is not long enough, and I am that desperate to play synthetic I can easily write a longer one. That’s about a page and a half of text, which I’ve seen a reasonable amount of successful applications around that length. It does look shorter because I’ve copied it into the forum itself.

I must bang the drum of “Quirk is not a quirk”.

You started off okay with your first sentence "companion and person assistant " but the rest applies to nearly every synth and gives no impression and its not unique enough.

It also makes your story somewhat boring and generic. You could literally be any person. Nothing sticks out. It also makes it hard to roleplay.

I know I harp on it… but my classic example is to imagine playing the exact scenario you wrote… but your synth is a fat italian pizza maker instead.
Even knowing nothing about them… you could play them, and in a more interesting way.

You need to lean into part of your backstory. Perhaps, Imagine your storry but you are a french butler instead of just companion.

Then it becomes easssy to flesh out how to act. Adding dialogue about being unhappy how dusty stuff is. Lament about not being able to offer a fresh towel or refreshments. Say snobby things about tea. Upon hearing french remark on the marines taste. Call everyone “young master”. Etc. Etc.

Thats the whole point, each synth should be a recognizable model. The stronger the quirk, the easier and natural the roleplay, and the more you will stick with it.

my biggest issue with this,

“I have enough to play as a synth” in medical, from SO and corpsman? Surgeons have… more surgery available to do,
are you efficient in larva removal and such

Mind if you post your timezone and hours you play most often?

Its very rare I take interest in other peoples Apps outside of mentor

But I want to see your competency myself for a few rounds

thanks for your interest. i’m BST and usually play most days, time varying.

i’ve spent a few gruelling rounds playing surgeon, enough to understand larva removal, and other complex surgeries.

The issue isn’t the fact that you know the surgery- what would like to be seen is surg under stressfull situations.

Do you think you could handle larva removal with a few seconds on the clock?
or how quickly you respond to a hugger trying to hug a patient, how much tunnel vision do you suffer when treating patients?

these type of situations the councilors want to see

i’ll be hopping on as a doctor next round. as Sam Till. i’ll play some more in the next few days as well

So I’m not sure how to even word this properly without sounding mean or something and I’m sure the council will leave much better feedback than me, but there is like a zero percent chance this application is going to get approved man. Please don’t take anything I write personally, I’m only responding because I’ve had good memories of your character from the roleplay point of view and have nothing against you. If you genuinely want to be a synth someday (personally I thought you were gonna go for CO at some point) I’d love to see you get approved eventually and running around as Hyde helping everyone out.

To start off you probably didn’t contact many Synth WL holders or more importantly Synth council members to review your application before posting it. A part of a councillors job is to help out with this whole application process in the first place and not taking advantage of them by sending a message on discord/forums just isn’t going to do you any favours. If you contacted them they would of told you this isn’t good enough as we literally have one of the councillors posting in here with a -1 as they explain simple points that would of been given to you in a private message had you messaged them before posting.

I’m not even going to talk about the story/quirk/combat-scenarios as other synths/councillors are better suited for that but you 100% do not have enough medical hours to be able to be a synth. You honestly would have to be extremely arrogant to think you know everything there is to know about medical and be extremely proficient in any scenario with your CMO/Doctor/Nurse/Medic hours. It’s not just about knowing to splint an arm that has a fracture or casually doing larva surgery ship side. You need chaotic situation experience as a deployed doctor. Every single synth is a medical god, being a surgery master - multiple surgeries at the same time to save time, 8 dead marines with over 400+ damage cause bad CAS is no problem, knowing all chem OD thresholds, knowing how to do chem line with ease, knowing when to use less understood chems like peri/inno, knowing all surgery bed locations on all maps to do front line larva removal, knowing how to completely diagnose someone’s organ damage off the hand held scanner instead of relying on the deployed FOB body scanner. It’s straight up the most important aspect of the role to have down.

Look at the past 5 approved synth applications for example, each and every single one of them is a well known player that considers medical their strongest skill. Multiple people supporting their claims due to having seen them out in the field as a FOB doctor/medic many many times. Almost all your hours are in combat roles and CIC, no one is going to have confidence in your medical ability what so ever. You need to be seen handling medical without any issues whatsoever in chaotic and stressful situations as a doctor.

Personally I think you have good roleplay from the rounds I interacted with you, I still remember multiple rounds of you as a XO in the past and your character was memorable from the roleplay you did. I think you’d actually be able to roleplay an interesting synth personality/character given the chance. I’d be shocked if you didn’t have decent engineering skills with your SL/FTL/CT hours so not gonna comment on that. But there is a zero percent chance your medical skills are up to the synth standard and you didn’t really contact enough people for help before posting this application.

If you want my advice I’d say stop playing combat roles like Spec/rifleman or whatever and put Doctor on high. Demand to deploy to the FOB at second drop every single round, don’t take the body scanner, show everyone and get your name out there that you know what you’re doing regarding medical. Play some engineer/medic on the side only if doctor is filled but mostly just focus all your effort on Doctor. The council wants to observe you being able to handle stressful surgery situations when you got multiple downed marines to take care of with lots of issues.

tldr; play more doctor - you telling a synth councillor you know enough medical to be a synth with 50 hours of staff officer/squad medic is actually crazy

Hi TurnipTurningUp and thank you for your interest in the Synthetic Whitelist.

The application is a little messy so I will just tackle it section by section.

Starting with the personality, besides the older age there is not much to make Hyde here unique personality-wise. Every Synthetic is epected to be knowledgable and a jack of all trades. Synthetics are not expected to be weak in Chemistry - which may prove hazardous in medical emergencies or toxicology - this is a liability.

In your interactions, you go more indepth about hte personality of Hyde. Using etiquette and being more jovial is good, but besides making jokes with the Marines there is not a lot of personality here in terms of interactions. And being quiet is not exactly a good personality as that’s something better suited for only certain situations; not all. You also forgot to include a logline.

I like your motivations for becoming a Synthetic - there is certainly a strong support element, but the RP potential is truly second to none especially when it comes to a Colony Synthetic.

Although your story does show many actions which Hyde takes - it not only has insufficent dialogue but the very personality itself has a lack of speaking. As a result, Hyde doesn’t mesh very well in CM’s round to round RP and gameplay, and it may instead just seem like a lack of RP.

The experience answers were pretty bland and medical is essentially the most important part of any Synthetic, as it often involves critical medical interventions. You can always elaborate more on this part!

Your combat scenarios were not satisfactory in that they were not varied. You gave one example and it was rather obvious for anyone involved, furthermore there was a large bit of importance that did not get mentioned - the FOB being breached is likely more important than telling Marines about a burrower which just ran away.

As for the observations and vetting, we were quite shocked to see that you thought SO and Corpsman are adequate avenues to develop surgery. Even people with dozens of hours as a surgeon may sometimes be lacking refined or expedited techniques when conducting surgery. The issue cannot be understated as Corpsman can perform 1 single surgery. It is just not an adequate replacement.

We had hoped you would respond to some of the feedback but regardless, it is imperative that you spend more time refining yourself in relevant support roles. Once you feel you are sufficently mechanically competent, then you should be able to start looking into making another re-application with a significant revision.

Unfortunately, this application will have to be denied, but you can reapply starting on 7/13/24. I highly recommend you get more mechanical experience before then, and also you work on refining your application! I wish you the best of luck
