We spend so much time shitposting about balance and memeing about how terrible everything is that I think we forget how genuinely unique this game actually is.
Name another game where you have asymmetric gameplay with 150+ players this complex. One side plays a traditional military shooter with squad tactics, supply lines, and combined arms. The other side plays a biological horror swarm with evolution mechanics and hive coordination. Both sides require completely different skillsets and strategies, and somehow it actually works most of the time.
Name another game where you can be a doctor performing surgery, a squad leader coordinating tactics, a pilot flying dropships, an engineer building FOBs, a researcher developing combat stims, or a fucking queen commanding an entire alien horde. And all of these roles matter. All of them affect the round. A good SL can turn a losing round into a win. A shit pilot can doom the entire marine force. The actions of individual players have weight in a way that basically no other multiplayer game achieves.
The emergent storytelling is unmatched. Every round creates unique situations that nobody planned. The frontline gets overrun and you’re doing a fighting retreat. Command abandons the marines and you mutiny. The queen dies early and xenos have to adapt or get wiped. A bald SO OB’s and accidentally kills half the frontline. A rifleman clutches an impossible situation. These aren’t scripted moments, they just happen because of how the systems interact.
Yeah, balance is fucked sometimes. Yeah, some updates are questionable. Yeah, rounds can be frustrating when one side steamrolls. But show me another game doing what CM does. You can’t, because it doesn’t exist.
This shouldn’t work. By all accounts, this game should not function. But it does, and when everything clicks and you get a good round with competent players on both sides, it’s genuinely one of the best multiplayer experiences you can have.
Anyway, buff marines, nerf xenos, maintainers are destroying the game, you know the drill.
