What happened to WO?

I remember a long time ago WO would be pretty popular a large portion of players would often vote to play it, though some left because… it was pretty much a horde survival mode. I personally enjoyed it pretty much, I know alot of people probably played it who are still active in this community so…

The criteria for it to even be selectable to vote for Is like 140 Pop. And then it’s got a very small chance to be in the voting pool. It’s not impossible. But it is effectively quite rare, or practically unseen if you don’t play at peak times all month.

WO is an incredibly unfun game mode for most xeno players considering all you do is throw yourself at the same Cade for an hour until the engineers fail to repair it with their 283668282 metal nail gun + welders. It’s like subjecting a fifth of the playerbase to watching paint dry so everyone who rolled marine can feel good about actually killing something for once (they will call a napalm strike on the cades).

It happens about once every 1-2 weeks.

WO is apparently broken and generally unfun, which is why jts almost never played

PvE AI might help revitalize the gamemode, but even that is not going to fix it by itself.

I believe Drath had a long-term idea of reworking the game mode into something called ‘Operation Assault’, but that’s a forlorn long-term idea.

iirc PvE AI was ported to PvP recently but I don’t think anyone’s run a stress test yet

why was anyone even playing Xeno during WO?

To make WO end faster

I am a masochist who gains pleasure from dying over and over at the same cadeline to PVT McBaskinBobbins for an hour straight

I really liked the idea of WO and I think the addition of perma-death for WO rounds was a good addition. That said, having played on both sides, its kinda terrible for the xeno. It’s effectively one giant FOB siege without the tools to actually siege until dozens of T1s and T2s die. I don’t begrudge the creation or creators behind it. I’m all in on alternative game modes but, without real changes I don’t think we’ll see WO often.

I’ll admit that I’d prefer to see a zombie or HvH round instead of WO. I just need Steelpoint to stop running HvH while I’m at work. :frowning: :frowning:

There is a PR open to port the PvE AI to PvP.

If this gets merged. I will make it a point to run a event incorporating this. Somehow. Once I’ve acclimatized myself to the PvE spawning system.

I can’t wait for the server to overheat immediately and burn down the pizza box it’s housed inside of

I don’t think WO was designed with buffed cades in mind. Breaking a single one is hard enough without an engineer making an entire row of them reinforced against brute damage. Thankfully, the mortar crew has about a 50/50 chance of being bald and more dangerous to the marines.

CM PVE is on the same box as us, as you can see, it’s going fine

I’ve heard that they’re concerned having 100+ players might make PvE AI unsustainable- Is it still fine at those player counts? If so, man I can’t wait

It’s more like, Byond code going into existential crisis, than server machine itself
