What the hellyante is this?

In this picture, the Praetorian Vanguard is slashing me from 3 tiles away over cades. Can someone explain how this works IC?

Abilities go through cades, with boiler gas being a slight exception.

Just dodge bro.

You said explain in character, so…

The praetorian stage in an XX-121’s life cycle sees it nearly double in height; specimens are reported to be about ten feet tall. In contrast to some of the other XX-121 specimens of its size, namely the boiler and the crusher, its comparative grace allows its movements a preternatural fluidity. This combination of agility and height allows it to partially lunge over a human sized chest high barricade, lashing its claws out before gravity pulls it back. The resulting attack has a range that belies the praetorian’s apparent reach. Much like how you are normally unable to reach the dishes placed at the foot of the Thanksgiving table when you are seated at the head unless you complete a daring bellyflop onto said table, stretch your arms out, and yank the food back. This wild lunge offers an advantage of surprise, but comes with a disadvantage of imprecision. The lunge momentarily unbalances the Praetorian, so it can only sweep its claws wildly instead of aiming for pinpoint strikes like it would if it had its foe adjacent.

You’re confusing In Character with In Context. In Character explanation would look like this:
TALLS ARE IN A BOX? TAIL LONG! TAIL GOES STAB! TALL DEAD!

Some abilities go behind cades yeah, vanguard is the most notorious one, but for example base rav scissor cut can hit you, eviscerate can hit you, fling can hit you, many such cases really. Even tailstab can hit you, but not guaranteed, there is RNG whether it hits you or the cade.

I was wondering why he asked In Character, I was like, “People really take their roleplaying seriously around here.” lol

OOOH THAT WAS ME! I was laughing as you were standing still!

Xenomain and fellow CM addict MHVO here, explaining in this case, vanguard’s pierce attack.

Vanguard’s pierce attack can hit up to 3 tiles away. It does roughly a bit more than a regular slash in damage. The pierce attacks the tile, not the players. The ability will always go 3 tiles out, and roughly travel like a bullet. Walls can block the strike. Pierce ignores cades. Pierce can freely target above and below the z-levels. When not targeting straight up/down/left/right or diagonals, it is a bit wonky but it can for instance go 2 up and then diagonal up and left/right. Sometimes it only goes one up, and then diagonal up-left/right and then up again though. Think of it like a bullet’s path.

So in this particular image. My target is not on you leaning against the wall, but on the ground you are standing on. You are directly diagonal of me, 3 up and 3 left. The first tile is the plasteel cade which is ignored. The second tile is open sand below the palm tree. The third tile is the one you are standing on. If you were normally standing on that tile, you would find you could shoot me with a gun.

Thank you for listening to my vanguard TED talk.

edit: In case you meant like how it would look in real life: I swing my tail and have it stab across in a fixed direction. Tail goes zoom across with unstoppable force, piercing weak talls in its path. The fake tall’s body gets punctured by the tip of the tail on its side. Fake tall metal no match for stabby tail.
