Just curious, cause queens can give royal jellies; so why can’t aCOs do the same? There have been a few instances where I’m like solo in CIC and I see someone do something epic and wish I could give em a medal, but then I remember Im not a queen lol
Queens can give jellies because there exists no reasonable WL alternative for the xeno faction. Only the CO can give medals, because medals are cool and show up at the end of the round, hence they should be properly written and reasonably applied by somebody who has been given the trusted ability to do so. Queens can give medals because xenos deserve recognition too

So CO’s can feel special.
But also, so the rewards given are held to a higher acumen. The xeno awards I’ve been given are kind of, maybe not lazily written, but written more like a player congratulating a person for playing good, rather something more IC, like a queen recognizing the great contribution this sister did. That, and also the things I’ve done to be rewarded a jelly haven’t felt as significant what I’ve done for my marine medals. I imagine similar things would happen if XO’s could give rewards. I’d rather no medal than a poorly written one.
And not that CO’s can’t or haven’t given poorly written or meme medals, but then you can just like write up a report or something maybe probably…

I have an idea of showing medal recommendations (suggested or approved by the XO) at the round end. Just for fluff, without them going into records.
Also I had an old PR:
The council wasn’t really against it, but in the end Neumann added recommendations (though they still require a CO online), so my PR just got forgotten.

Only COs give medals because it involves writing and they are the only ones who have proved their literacy by way of writing a short story

It really doesn’t feel like medals should be a CO-only award because the round isn’t guaranteed a CO and it feels a little like elitism to say that it’s just a perk of the WL and XO’s don’t deserve it. The whitelist takes a lot of time and effort to be granted a position among the holders and by my reckoning we have a damn good share of literate XO’s as-is who, whether they want to or not, aren’t on the list. People who likely won’t abuse it.
Since there’s an almost literal paper trail, it’d be exceedingly easy to track and roleban people who give out LRP bullshit medals, and it’d be more positive affirmation going around to have another person each round handing them out. One could argue it makes it less “special” but let’s be so for real with one another for a second— it’s a paragraph and a png that you can see via a button on your menu. It’s special because of the round that it’s attached to, and it doesn’t matter whether an XO or a CO hands it to you because one way or another you’ll have that commemoration of a great round and it feels good.
It might come off as a little anti-WL bias here but I really think that something like that shouldn’t be restricted by a five page essay when it’s just gonna help spread good vibes at best and be easily punished if abused at the worst.

There could be a simple fix to allow XOs or aCOs to give medals, for example adding a need for admin/mod to approve the medal after reading it through and making sure it ain’t a meme medal or poorly written one, if that was the only fear with XO/aCO given medals. I know it would put more work on mods/admins but it could be one of the ways to approve them.

WLs in general will always be elitist, and that doesn’t go for just CO or Pred. Synth used to have the issue with everyone thinking they were above common decency (combat synthing every round), before they got atomic bombed and the council was shifted for the better.

i mean im pretty sure it’s already in game rules that there is an expectation to write decent, serious rewards for medals and jellies. Sure I’ve seen some mediocre ones, not saying it doesn’t happen, but I’ve always tried to write good awards as queen. I know there’s no WL equivalent for xenos, but it still goes to show non-WL players can be trusted to an extent to give awards. If it’s meme, they’ll get bwoinked or you can report it
what if medals were sorted in your records? Like there was a tab to see xeno medals, marine medals given by aCOs, and then medals given by COs. If it makes that much of a difference.

You can cherry pick dogshit XO’s and LRP Queens but for the most part they all do a pretty standard and okay job of it, with some shining through. If someone is LRP in Command like this, they should be actioned by admins NORMALLY with rolebans or notes to begin with.
If someone meets the bottom line of Roleplay to play XO, they should be able to write a medal.
